Relationship Between Attachment And Out-Of-Home Placements In Emotionally And Behaviorally Disordered Male Adolescents, Gail M. Curran Jan 1998

Relationship Between Attachment And Out-Of-Home Placements In Emotionally And Behaviorally Disordered Male Adolescents, Gail M. Curran

Open Access Master's Theses

Since its inception, Bowlby's attachment theory has guided research in the area of attachment. A body of literature supports the conclusion that when attachment needs are not met in the first year of life, serious deficits and problems can occur. The present study adds to the existing literature by examining attachment in adolescents, an age group not frequently researched. Specifically, this study examines the relationship between attachment and multiple out-of-home placements for adolescent males living in a residential treatment facility.

In order to understand the characteristics of youth living in a residential treatment facility, an archival search was completed to …

An Emerging Consensus: Reproductive Technology And The Law, Janet L. Dolgin Jan 1998

An Emerging Consensus: Reproductive Technology And The Law, Janet L. Dolgin

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The advent and swift expansion of reproductive technology beginning in the late 1970s accelerated the transformation of the family by undermining sacred assumptions about the reproductive process. In vitro fertilization, embryo transfer, surrogacy, and the cryopreservation of gametic and embryonic material have challenged deeply internalized assumptions about the character and social implications of human reproduction. In addition, reproductive technology has placed third parties -- doctors, lawyers, egg or sperm donors, and gestational or "traditional" surrogates -- directly at the center of the reproductive process. Inevitably, disputes have developed about the nature and parameters of parenthood and about the rights and …

Essential Speech: Why Corporate Speech Is Not Free, Daniel J.H. Greenwood Jan 1998

Essential Speech: Why Corporate Speech Is Not Free, Daniel J.H. Greenwood

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

In a democracy, the citizens are the only legitimate sources of law. It follows inexorably that corporations, not being citizens, cannot be legitimate political actors.

The problem of corporate speech is further complicated by the internal rules of corporate governance. When corporations "speak," they do so by decision of their managers, who are constrained by fiduciary duties and economic pressure of the stock market to advocate for a single value: maximum profit for shares. In a multifaceted culture of manifold and various values, it is inevitable that the pursuit of profit, valuable as it is, will conflict with other important …

The Role Of Social Support In Mediating Stress And Illness, Valerie M. Stachour '98 Jan 1998

The Role Of Social Support In Mediating Stress And Illness, Valerie M. Stachour '98

Honors Projects

Social Support has been shown to be one important factor in the link between stress and illness. In this study, the role of social support is examined in light of the two different categorizations of social support: quality and quantity. High quality and high quantity social support groups were hypothesized to be correlated with lower illness levels. In an attempt to explore the relative merits of the main effect and the buffering hypotheses, the relative role of social support to stress and illness was examined. There was a significant correlation between quality of social support and illness levels. Quantity of …

A Case Study Analysis Of The Relationship Between Atherosclerosis And Alzheimer's Disease, Katie Larsen '98 Jan 1998

A Case Study Analysis Of The Relationship Between Atherosclerosis And Alzheimer's Disease, Katie Larsen '98

Honors Projects

Several animal studies have brought the cholinergic hypothesis of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) into question. In addition, recent clinical studies have shown that the number of neuritic plaques and neurofibrillary tangles does not yield a conclusive diagnosis of AD. A reassessment of risk factors involved in AD development has led to findings that atherosclerosis is associated with dementia. The present study is a clinical analysis, through the use of case studies, of the relationship between atherosclerosis severity, based on autopsy results, and AD severity, based on scores from cognitive tests and functional assessments, as well as autopsy results. The age of …

Complex Scientific Testimony: Can Educational Psychology Turn Jurors Into Students And Lawyers Into Teachers?, Jason A. Krebs '98 Jan 1998

Complex Scientific Testimony: Can Educational Psychology Turn Jurors Into Students And Lawyers Into Teachers?, Jason A. Krebs '98

Honors Projects

Jury trials are an integral part of the United States system of justice. However, as of late, the institution of the jury has been attacked on the front that much of the testimony presented to jurors is too complex for them to comprehend. For the proposed study, using the principles of educational psychology theorized by David Ausubel, a mock video of a trial hinging on a "complex scientific concept" will be created and then viewed by mock jurors. We are expecting that, by using Ausubel's principles, that jurors will, in effect, become "students" in a virtual classroom. Conversely, attorneys and …

A Comparison Of Prospective Memory And Executive Processes In Patients With Subcortical Illness, Milan Elmer "Trey" Folkers Iii '98 Jan 1998

A Comparison Of Prospective Memory And Executive Processes In Patients With Subcortical Illness, Milan Elmer "Trey" Folkers Iii '98

Honors Projects

Dementia is a common disorder affecting neuropsychological function in several spheres of mental activity including language memory, visuospatial function, and cognition. Studies into the cognitive deficits associated with dementia have allowed researchers to rank disorders into two subclasses: cortical and subcortical dementia. Cortical dementias such as Alzheimer's disease have been the focus of a plethora of studies. Subcortical dementia, which is commonly found in Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease patients, is marked by bradyphrenia, visuospatial abnormalities, personality alterations, memory disturbances primarily involving recall but not recognition, and loss of executive functions. The most recent disorder to be classified as a …

Aggression, Relational Aggression, Sociometric Status And The Quality And Authenticity Of Children's Friendships, Carrie C. Finch '98 Jan 1998

Aggression, Relational Aggression, Sociometric Status And The Quality And Authenticity Of Children's Friendships, Carrie C. Finch '98

Honors Projects

The purpose of the present study is to assess how aggression, relational aggression, and sociometric status relate to the quality and authenticity of children's friendships. Relations between aggression, relational aggression, and sociometric status as well as between friendship quality and friendship authenticity were also explored. 136 fourth and fifth grade children (69 boys, 67 girls) completed several measures, including a sociometric measure, the aggression section of the Pupil Evaluation Inventory with a few items measuring relational aggression inserted, the Friendship Quality Questionnaire, and a questionnaire assessing friendship authenticity. Children's peer rated levels of aggression and their sociometric status did not …

Latent Variable Generalized Linear Models, Jane Creagh-Osborne Jan 1998

Latent Variable Generalized Linear Models, Jane Creagh-Osborne

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) (McCullagh and Nelder, 1989) provide a unified framework for fixed effect models where response data arise from exponential family distributions. Much recent research has attempted to extend the framework to include random effects in the linear predictors. Different methodologies have been employed to solve different motivating problems, for example Generalized Linear Mixed Models (Clayton, 1994) and Multilevel Models (Goldstein, 1995). A thorough review and classification of this and related material is presented. In Item Response Theory (IRT) subjects are tested using banks of pre-calibrated test items. A useful model is based on the logistic function with …

The Priming Of Visual Feature Integration And Illusory Conjunctions, Graham Derek Smith Jan 1998

The Priming Of Visual Feature Integration And Illusory Conjunctions, Graham Derek Smith

School of Psychology Theses

Whether non-spatial previewing can interact with the process of integrating visual features and thereby affect the formation of illusory conjunctions was studied. A series of ten experiments were undertaken that employed methods borrowed from the illusory conjunction and visual previewing paradigms. Participants reported the identities of two briefly presented target objects. Preview stimuli were presented prior to the to-be-reported target stimuli. The preview objects and target objects were colour-filled geometric shapes. The effects of two types of non-spatial previewing were investigated; feature previewing and conjunction previewing. In feature previewing the preview stimuli were congruent or incongruent with one of the …

Frontal Lobe Dysfunction In Non-Clinical Compulsive Checkers, Christopher J. Boys Jan 1998

Frontal Lobe Dysfunction In Non-Clinical Compulsive Checkers, Christopher J. Boys

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Recent studies suggest deficits in set-shifting ability, as assessed by tasks such as the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The present study examined the extent to which these deficits were demonstrated by nonclinical "checkers" selected on the basis of scores on the Maudsley Obsessional Compulsive Inventory. A modified version of the WCST was used, the Milwaukee Card Sorting Test (MCST), in order to determine whether the deficits in set-shifting ability are due to a complete lack of switching or to a dysregulation in switching. In the latter case, the individual illustrates correct set shifting …

Emotional Competence In Children With Adhd:, Patricia J. Bonello Jan 1998

Emotional Competence In Children With Adhd:, Patricia J. Bonello

Wayne State University Dissertations

The study investigated the emotional competence in children with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), explored the possibility of differences between the behavior of parents of children with and without ADHD, and considered the relevance of classifying children into groups of normal/nonpathological, mild/moderate ADHD, and severe ADHD. It was hypothesized that, compared to normal children, children with ADHD would demonstrate specific deficits in both emotion appraisal and emotion regulation. It was also anticipated that the level of emotional competence deficits would be related to the severity of ADHD. Eighty (44 ADHD and 36 normal) children and their parents participated in a puzzle …

Utopia In Iowa?: Etienne Cabet And The Icarian Concept Of Progress, John Davis Higdon Jan 1998

Utopia In Iowa?: Etienne Cabet And The Icarian Concept Of Progress, John Davis Higdon

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Nineteenth century America was a period of transition. Reform movements paralleled and sometimes replaced politics as idealistic people worked for a cornucopia of social causes. Believing man capable of finding a universally correct lifestyle, numerous activists designed communities to guide the world to peace and prosperity. One of these groups, the Icarians, following the teachings of their founder Etienne Cabet, built several utopian hamlets in the United States and existed for over half a century. Their longevity can be primarily accredited to their espousal of the philosophical doctrine of Progress. An examination of the Icarian's history shows that a quasi-religious …

Child Sexual Abuse In Ireland: An Historical And Anthropological Note, Kevin Lalor Jan 1998

Child Sexual Abuse In Ireland: An Historical And Anthropological Note, Kevin Lalor

Articles

Child sexual abuse in Ireland has entered the public domain only in the last twenty years. This process was accelerated by a number of high profile cases which became public in the mid 1990s. Prior to the recent past, few references to child sexual abuse in Ireland exist. The first written evidence is found in the Penitentials of the early Christian period. Penance is specified for those that “misuse” children. Mention of adult child sexual relations is also found in the Brehon law texts. Historians, sociologists and anthropologists of childhood suggest that patterns of child rearing vary across time and …

An Evaluation Of The Responses Of Clinical And Non-Clinical Boys On The Social Skills Inventory For Youth, Rachel Frederickson Jan 1998

An Evaluation Of The Responses Of Clinical And Non-Clinical Boys On The Social Skills Inventory For Youth, Rachel Frederickson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the responses of adolescent boys on a newly developed measure, the Social Skills Inventory for Youth. Participants were recruited from two residential institutions, an outpatient clinic, a laboratory school associated with a medium-sized university, and two middle schools all located in the Midwest. Participants ranged in age from 11 to 17 years. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was conducted to determine if there were differences between boys diagnosed with AD/HD and appropriate nonclinical controls. Results showed a significant effect for group. However, only one subscale was found useful in differentiating between …

Awareness Of Deficits In Dementia Of The Alzheimer’S Type And Normal Aging, Jay D. Anderson Jan 1998

Awareness Of Deficits In Dementia Of The Alzheimer’S Type And Normal Aging, Jay D. Anderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Past research has documented the presence of frontal lobe dysfunction in both dementia of the Alzheimer's Type (DAT) and normal aging. The purpose of the present study was to further investigate whether one particular type of frontal lobe dysfunction, unawareness of deficits or anosognosia, differs qualitatively or quantitatively when occurring in DAT versus the normal aging process. Anosognosia was investigated in three groups of subjects: individuals diagnosed with DAT (N = 25), older normal controls (N = 25), and middle-aged normal controls (N = 25). Unawareness of deficits was operationalized as the discrepancy between subjects' self-rating and that of another …

Why I Am A Lawyer, Joseph L. Daly Jan 1998

Why I Am A Lawyer, Joseph L. Daly

San Diego Law Review

With so little honor associated with the law profession these days, one must wonder why any person aspiring to do something respectable with her or his life7 would choose to be a lawyer.8 To become a lawyer today, students must have a firm desire to be an attorney and a steadfast willingness to accept social opprobrium.9
