Factors Affecting The Self-Perceived Continuing Education Needs Of Certified Athletic Trainers, Marchell Cupett Austin

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This purpose of this study was to determine the self-perceived continuing education needs of Certified Athletic Trainers, the factors that affect those needs, and continuing education participation as well as preference for program format. A survey was developed using the domains and tasks depicted by the NATABOC's Role Delineation Study. Respondents rated the importance of their need for continuing education for each task within five domains: prevention of athletic injuries; recognition, evaluation and immediate care of athletic injuries; rehabilitation of athletic injuries; health care administration; and professional development and responsibility. The survey was sent to 2,000 randomly selected Certified Athletic …

Hardiness And Job Fitness For The Intensive Family Preservation Specialist: A Correlational Study, Sandi Fisher Jan 1998

Hardiness And Job Fitness For The Intensive Family Preservation Specialist: A Correlational Study, Sandi Fisher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is costly to train the counselors who serve in intensive Family Preservation Services (IFPS). The hiring agency must pay for traveling expenses in addition to any fee paid for training. When an IFPS worker chooses to terminate employment before the end of two years of employment, this puts a strain on an already tight budget. This problem could be alleviated by finding an efficient pre-hire screening instrument. The three personality traits described in Hardiness Theory literature: commitment, challenge, and control, are traits often used to describe the ideal IFPS worker. This study assessed IFPS workers to determine if the …

A Discovery-Oriented Process Study Of Enactment In Family Therapy: Development Of The Family Therapy Enactment Rating Scale, Elizabeth Ong-Mythuan Fong

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

With the effectiveness of psychotherapy now well-supported in both the individual and family literatures (Garfield & Bergin, 1994), we are entering an era where questions of how and why therapy works are of interest. More specifically, there has been support and encouragement by some researchers (Rice & Greenberg, 1984; Mahrer, 1988) for the use of discovery-oriented methodologies to explore clinical phenomena that have yet to be empirically validated. The following is a discovery-oriented study of enactment, a structural family therapy intervention. The theoretical goals of enactments, their relevance to clinical practice, as well as how they are actually implemented in …

The Relationship Between Ethnic Identity, Self-Esteem, Emotional Well-Being And Depression Among Lakota/Dakota Sioux Adolescents, Susan M. Pittenger

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Despite conceptual support linking ethnic identity and psychological adjustment among Native Americans, empirical research examining this relationship remains limited. In light of recent developments in the area of ethnic identity research, including alternative conceptual models, improved methodologies, and more sophisticated measures, this study examined the relationship between ethnic identity, self-esteem, emotional well-being, and depression among Native American reservation youth.

The relationship between the predictor variables of American Indian ethnic identity, White-American identity and bicultural identity, and the criterion measures of self-esteem, emotional well-being, and depression were examined for 137 Lakota/Dakota Sioux reservation youth. Participants completed surveys including the Multigroup Ethnic …

Thermodynamic Modeling And Analysis Of Human Stress Responses, Satish C. Boregowda Jan 1998

Thermodynamic Modeling And Analysis Of Human Stress Responses, Satish C. Boregowda

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A novel approach based on the second law of thermodynamics is developed to investigate the psychophysiology and quantify human stress level. Two types of stresses (thermal and mental) are examined. A Unified Stress Response Theory (USRT) is developed under the new proposed field of study called Engineering Psychophysiology. The USRT is used to investigate both thermal and mental stresses from a holistic (human body as a whole) and thermodynamic viewpoint. The original concepts and definitions are established as postulates which form the basis for thermodynamic approach to quantify human stress level. An Objective Thermal Stress Index (OTSI) is developed by …

Constructing Identities And Defining The Nation: Germany Since 1949., Frank Anthony Allevato Jan 1998

Constructing Identities And Defining The Nation: Germany Since 1949., Frank Anthony Allevato

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Not long after Germans began the historic task of dismantling the Berlin Wall in 1989, their country was again reunited after forty-five years of division. For the second time in less than a century, a majority of Europe’s Germans were brought together under the banner of a single political sovereignty. As the enlarged Federal Republic psychologically reorients and physically reconstructs itself, the event is likely to have continued European and worldwide implications. Understanding the new Germany’s internal development and its evolving self-perceptions is to conceive of the country’s role now and in the years ahead; central to understanding Germany today …

Language Imperialism Versus Linguistic Rights: The Case Of Native Americans., Jonathan Woodruff Maffay Jan 1998

Language Imperialism Versus Linguistic Rights: The Case Of Native Americans., Jonathan Woodruff Maffay

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

From the days of the Old Testament and Tower of Babel through the nineteenth century efforts to create artificial languages, the human race has longed for a universal language. Its purpose would be to bind the linguistically diverse people of the world into a cohesive whole. With English apparently well on its way to becoming just such a universal language, many people are now growing concerned at the prospect. For them English is an imperial language that threatens the world’s rich cultural and language complexity. Linguistic rights activists have now begun trying to counter this universalizing trend with language repair …

The Effects Of Cocaine And Morphine On Avoidance Responding At Different Levels Of Food Deprivation., Michael Phillip Layng

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Three rats deprived to 80% of free-feeding weight pressed a bar to avoid electric shock in a Sidman avoidance procedure (20 s R-S interval, 5 s S-S interval). Once responding became stable, two of the rats were reduced to 70% of free feeding weight and one rat’s weight was increased to 95%. Cocaine (10.0, 17.0, 30.0, 40.0 mg/kg), morphine (5.6, 10.0, 17.0, 30.0, 40.0) and saline were tested in a random series with multiple determinations. Rate of responding and avoidance proficiency were recorded. When the injection series was completed the rats were free-fed and their weights redetermined so that the …

Theory Of Mind Development And Attentional Processes In Young School Children., Amy Gillies Wilson Jan 1998

Theory Of Mind Development And Attentional Processes In Young School Children., Amy Gillies Wilson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The following study explored relations between theory of mind understanding, attention, language ability, and general intelligence. Scores on measures of auditory processing (Test of Auditory Reasoning and Processing Skills), language comprehension (Test of Auditory Comprehension of Language, Revised), matrix completion (Raven's Colored Progressive Matrices), false belief and recursive thinking understanding were obtained along with teacher ratings of children's self-regulation as measured by Attention and Hyperactivity subscales of the Conner's Rating Scale. Analysis of zero-order correlations revealed self-regulation to be negatively correlated with recursive thinking, while age, general intelligence, auditory processing, and language ability were positively correlated with theory of mind …

Symbolic Behavior: Reorganizing And Expanding Stimulus Classes Through Matching And Naming., Oliver Wirth Jan 1998

Symbolic Behavior: Reorganizing And Expanding Stimulus Classes Through Matching And Naming., Oliver Wirth

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of the present study was to further clarify the structural and functional properties of stimulus equivalence classes and functional stimulus classes relative to the procedures that establish them. With college students, stimulus equivalence classes were established using a standard selection-based matching-to-sample (MTS) procedure, and functional stimulus classes were established using a topography-based naming task. During the naming trials, students were trained to say distinct nonsense words in the presence of arbitrarily assigned sets of symbols. Computer-controlled voice-recognition software was used to record and analyze students' vocal responses for accuracy and speed. Experiment 1 examined whether stimulus equivalence classes …

Organizational Culture And Leadership At Berea College: An Historical Inquiry Into Saga Development And Underlying Cultural Assumptions., Gerald Emerson Wood Jan 1998

Organizational Culture And Leadership At Berea College: An Historical Inquiry Into Saga Development And Underlying Cultural Assumptions., Gerald Emerson Wood

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Culture is a pervasive concept that is not easily encompassed in any one definition. Culture within an organization is both process and product. It is both a dynamic agent of influence within the temporal and spatial context of organizational life and an object of study approached from the actor's point of view and thickly described. My general interest is in the cultural context of colleges, and more specifically in the part that culture has played in the formation and transformation of the mission and role of Berea College as it has sought to educate marginalized people for nearly 150 years. …

Law, Venture Capital, And Entrepreneurism In Japan: A Microeconomic Perspective On The Impact Of Law On The Generation And Financing Of Venture Businesses, Eric C. Sibbitt Jan 1998

Law, Venture Capital, And Entrepreneurism In Japan: A Microeconomic Perspective On The Impact Of Law On The Generation And Financing Of Venture Businesses, Eric C. Sibbitt

Connecticut Journal of International Law

Part one of this article attempts to demonstrate through a microeconomic framework how the legal, economic, and cultural forces underlying the Japanese financial system impact the funding of venture businesses in Japan. In a venture finance market, the microeconomic decisions of entrepreneurs and venture investors determine how much capital is ultimately supplied to finance venture businesses. Investors, the suppliers of capital to a venture market, seek to ensure the highest possible payback on investment by maximizing expected returns. Rational entrepreneurs, on the demand side of the market for venture capital, seek the use of investor capital to pursue income-generating opportunities …

Charting The Influences On The Judicial Mind: An Empirical Study Of Judicial Reasoning, Gregory C. Sisk, Michael Heise, Andrew P. Morriss

Faculty Scholarship

In 1988, hundreds of federal district judges were suddenly confronted with the need to render a decision on the constitutionality of the Sentencing Reform Act and the newly promulgated criminal Sentencing Guidelines. Never before has a question of such importance and involving such significant issues of constitutional law, mandated the immediate and simultaneous attention of such a large segment of the federal trial bench. Accordingly, this event provides an archetypal model for exploring the influence of social background, ideology, judicial role and institution, and other factors on judicial decisionmaking. Based upon a unique set of written decisions involving an identical …

Participation Of Students In Their Own Transition/Education Planning Process: Perceptions Of Key Persons., Billie L. Friedland Jan 1998

Participation Of Students In Their Own Transition/Education Planning Process: Perceptions Of Key Persons., Billie L. Friedland

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The literature indicates that a lack of participation in their own decision-making process has contributed to a diminished quality of life for people with disabilities (Sands, Kozleski, & Goodwin, 1991; Sands & Doll, 1996). Classroom and living situations often foster learned dependence, resulting in over-reliance on others to find problem solutions. To improve students' influence over their transition outcomes, educators and community persons need to provide students with appropriate instruction and opportunities to participate fully in their own life planning. This exploratory, comparative study utilized individual interviews, focus groups, and Individual Transition-Education Plan (ITEP) document reviews to explore and compare …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In countries where population consists of the members of different ethnic and racial groups, it is important to use a multicultural approach in education. The goal of the present research is to explain the connection between age, cognitive abilities, empathic understanding and their relationship with the social attitude of racial stereotyping. It is possible to see the effect of cognitive limitations of the children in their reasoning about others, and consequently in their empathic understanding and in their racial stereotyping behavior. In this study it was predicted that while the age (maturation) of the children increases, their cognitive abilities would …

Student Interest And Teacher Behaviors., Keith David Weber

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Literature from the fields of educational psychology, instructional communication, and organizational management are reviewed to lend insight into the relationship between interest and empowerment. Theoretical similarities of these two constructs are highlighted in an attempt to argue for concept isomorphism. The discussion of student interest will address (a) how interest has been examined to date, (b) the definition and components of interest, (c) qualitative differences in types of interest, (d) how interest has been manipulated, and (e) measurement and operationalization concerns in interest. This discussion of interest will be followed by a section that looks at how some of the …

The Effects Of Knowledge Of Results Compared To Knowledge Of Results With Goal Setting Intervention On Selected Tennis Skills., Oliver Trittenwein

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of knowledge of results (KR) compared to KR-with-goal-setting on selected tennis skills with three female collegiate tennis players over the course of a competitive season. A goal-setting program was designed using the goal attainment scaling procedure (Smith, 1988), where participants generated numerical targets for their chosen components. A multiple-baseline, single-subject design across behaviors replicated across participants was employed. Data were examined by way of change in mean, level, and trend between baseline and first intervention (KR), baseline and second intervention (KR-with-goal-setting), and first and second intervention. All three participants provided …
