The Prevalence Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Among Federal Prison Inmates, Robert K. Guthrie Jan 1998

The Prevalence Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Among Federal Prison Inmates, Robert K. Guthrie

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Incarceration in the United States has increased dramatically in recent years. The total number of inmates under the jurisdiction of the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) on September 30, 1995, was 100,958, an increase of over 11,000 (12%) from January 1, 1994 (U. S. Department of Justice, 1995a) and an increase o f over 60,000 (152%) from 1981 (U. S. Department of Justice, 1994a). Approximately 92% of this population is male. Rubin and McCampbell (1995) point out that conservative estimates indicate that 6-8% (6,000-8,000) of inmates currently under BOP control exhibit a major mental disorder, such as bipolar affective disorder, …

An Evaluation Of The Relative Value Of Spectral And Phenological Information For Tree Crown Classification Of Digital Images In The Eastern Deciduous Forest., Thomas Lee Key Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Digitized, multitemporal, small format 35 mm aerial photographs were acquired, processed, and classified to determine the relative value of spectral and phenological information for tree crown classification of digital images of the Eastern Deciduous Forest. The one-hectare study site, located in a second-growth forest 15 km east of Morgantown, West Virginia, was photographed from a light aircraft ten times from May to October 1997 using both true color and false color film. The negatives and positive transparencies were scanned, and then rectified, enhanced, and classified using ERDAS Imagine. Differences in the timing of phenologic events between tree species, specifically leaf …

Context Dependencies For Younger And Older Adults In Learning A 4-Key Motor Sequence, Andrew James Meyers Jan 1998

Context Dependencies For Younger And Older Adults In Learning A 4-Key Motor Sequence, Andrew James Meyers

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The role environmental context has on performance level may change based on the skill being learned and the performer of that skill. The present study was designed to examine the role of environmental context in the learning of a 4-key motor sequence task. The present study had two primary purposes: first, replicating findings of a limited context effect in younger adults, and second, extending the findings to older adults to look at changes related to aging and environmental context. ANOVA results revealed no significant context effect in the present study for younger adults, and therefore comparisons between younger and older …

Violence Goes To School, Jack Levin Jan 1998

Violence Goes To School, Jack Levin

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The growing problem of juvenile violence has found its way into all of our institutions, including our schools. More and more school administrators report having to deal with violence on an everyday basis and having to suspend students for carrying weapons or being involved in violent confrontations. In response, many observers have suggested solutions that are politically expedient, but simply won’t work. They fail to address the question of what makes violence so appealing to so many youngsters, in the first place. Without providing healthy alternatives to violence, all the training programs, counseling, and therapy will have little effect on …

Teacher's Lives And Beliefs: Influences That Shape The Teaching Of U. S. History, Michael H. Romanowski Jan 1998

Teacher's Lives And Beliefs: Influences That Shape The Teaching Of U. S. History, Michael H. Romanowski

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The purpose of this study was to examine the complex influences that shape the teaching of U. S. history. Six secondary American history teachers participated in interviews and classroom observations centering on factors that affect their approach to the teaching of U. S. history. Findings indicate that there are various influences that play a significant role in determining the version of U. S. history students have the opportunity to learn. These include teachers’ personal beliefs about religion and morality, the affect of history professors, and teachers’ social class and family backgrounds. Several suggestions are made as to how teacher education …

Voluntary Participation And Spite In Public Good Provision Experiments: An International Comparison, Timothy N. Cason, Tatsuyoshi Saijo, T. Yamato Jan 1998

Voluntary Participation And Spite In Public Good Provision Experiments: An International Comparison, Timothy N. Cason, Tatsuyoshi Saijo, T. Yamato

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This paper studies public good provision in the laboratory using the voluntary contribution mechanism, in a cross-cultural experiment conducted in the United States and Japan. Our environment differs from the standard voluntary contribution mechanism because in one treatment, subjects first decide whether or not to participate in providing this public good. This participation decision is conveyed to the other subject prior to the subjects' contribution decisions.

Determinants Of Currency Risk Premiums, J. A. Carlson, C. L. Osler Jan 1998

Determinants Of Currency Risk Premiums, J. A. Carlson, C. L. Osler

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

The risk premium is a function of both the interest rate differential and the gap between the current exchange rate and its long-run equilibrium in a model of the foreign exchange market with both non-speculating traders and rational speculators. If the speculators have an alternative to specializing in exchange-rate speculation, then there should be no presumption that uncovered interest rate parity will hold even approximately with a long-run equilibrium number of speculators. Furthermore, when other traders respond to interest-rate differentials, the model can give rise to a negative relationship between the interest-rate differential and the subsequent change in the exchange …

Multiresolution Detection Of Spiculated Lesions In Digital Mammograms, Sheng Liu, Charles F. Babbs, Edward Delp Jan 1998

Multiresolution Detection Of Spiculated Lesions In Digital Mammograms, Sheng Liu, Charles F. Babbs, Edward Delp

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper we present a novel multiresolution scheme for the detection of spiculated lesions in digital mammograms. First, a multiresolution representation of the original mammogram is obtained using a linear phase nonseparable 2-D wavelet transform. A set of features is then extracted at each resolution in the wavelet pyramid for every pixel. This approach addresses the difficulty of predetermining the neighborhood size for feature extraction to characterize objects that may appear in different sizes. Detection is performed from the coarsest resolution to the finest resolution using a binary tree classifier. This top-down approach requires less computation by starting with …

Language Dependency In Parsing: Evidence From Monolingual And Bilingual Processing, Eva M. Fernández Jan 1998

Language Dependency In Parsing: Evidence From Monolingual And Bilingual Processing, Eva M. Fernández

Publications and Research

Language dependency in parsing results when the parsing strategies used by bilinguals depend on the language of the input, in the case that cross-linguistic differences in processing exist. If bilingual parsing is language independent, on the other hand, bilinguals will process all input using the same strategies---those of L1, those of L2, or an amalgamated or compromised set of L1 and L2 strategies. This discussion evaluates existing research on bilingual processing, regarding how well it addresses questions related to the language dependency issue, as well as recent research on cross-linguistic differences in parsing. As a preview into the future of …
