The Effects Of Gender And Task Complexity On Audit Judgment, Janne Chung, Gary S. Monroe Jan 1998

The Effects Of Gender And Task Complexity On Audit Judgment, Janne Chung, Gary S. Monroe

Research outputs pre 2011

This study examines the interaction effect between gender and task complexity on audit judgment based on the selectivity hypothesis. This hypothesis states that males are selective information processors whereas females are detailed information processors. The study extends this hypothesis to an auditing context and hypothesizes that males will outperform females when task complexity is low while females will outperform males when task complexity is high. A two (males and females) by two (task complexity - high and low) full factorial experiment was carried out. The low and high task complexity conditions were created by manipulating the number of cues. The …

Proceedings Of The Fifth International Women In Leadership Conference: Ethics Or Leadership? The 90'S Dilemma, Adrianne Kinnear (Ed.)

Research outputs pre 2011

The International Women in Leadership conference attracts internationally renowned speakers as well as a wide audience from across the nation. The Conference is at the forefront of organisational and leadership research and provides a means of personal interaction with preeminent female researchers and leaders in Australia and overseas. Such interaction deepens the understanding of the leadership capacities of women and of leadership in organisations, knowledge which is central to the intellectual work of the Women in Leadership Project. Held at the Esplanade Hotel, Fremantle, from the 25th-27th November 1996, the Fifth International Women in Leadership conference focused on the theme: …

Research outputs pre 2011

The study reported here aimed to identify the particular practices and uncover the particular principles of a group of ESL teachers. Some of the teachers were working with adult learners and some were working with young children. The research aimed to answer three main questions:

3. What is the relationship between the principles they held and the practices they adopted?

The study also aimed to find out if there were similarities or differences between teachers …

Australian Aboriginal Students In Higher Education, Ian Malcolm, Judith Rochecouste Jan 1998

Australian Aboriginal Students In Higher Education, Ian Malcolm, Judith Rochecouste

Research outputs pre 2011

One of the striking features of Australian higher education over the last ten years has been the marked increase in participation by Indigenous Australians. In a National Review of Education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, carried out in 1994, it was noted that the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students had more than doubled between 1988 and 1993 (National Review of Education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, 1994:28-29). Indigenous Australians constitute 1.6 per cent of the population of Australia and in 1993 some 5,578 indigenous people were attending Australian public universities, which is 1.3% …

Human Services: A Discussion Paper, David Wiles Jan 1998

Human Services: A Discussion Paper, David Wiles

Research outputs pre 2011

Human services is an emergent field of study and work in Australia. Its definition is complex, needing continuing theoretical and empirical clarification. Despite the contemporary decline of the Australian welfare state, human services has emerged in cultural congruence with historic Australian notions of a 'fair go', of social equity, and of social egalitarianism. Human services constitutes a nascent profession, which - in the main - helps people with problems, particularly including members of the social 'underclass'. With much of its origins in volunteerism and the voluntary sector, human service organisational theory is now developing, and is helping workers and students …

The Effects Of Counterexplanation And Audit Groups On Fraud Detection, Janne Chung, Gary S. Monroe Jan 1998

The Effects Of Counterexplanation And Audit Groups On Fraud Detection, Janne Chung, Gary S. Monroe

Research outputs pre 2011

Prior studies have found that auditors' fraud detection rates are relatively low (Bernardi 1994; Pincus 1991 ). The present study examines whether counterexplaining inaccurate judgments will increase fraud detection rates and whether audit groups can counterexplain more effectively compared to individual auditors. The possible negative effect of counterexplanation is examined by requiring audit groups and individual auditors to counterexplain accurate judgments. The purpose of this 'inanipulatiori is to determine whether counterexplaining accurate judgments will lead to negative belief revision, and whether this negative belief revision will be mitigated by the use of audit groups. A 2 x 2 x 2 …

The Mythical Melting Pot : Christian Syncretism In American Religious Belief And Ritual, Chaya Spears

Honors Capstones

This thesis is a survey of seven examples of Christian syncretism within the geographical context of the United States. I begin by explaining the definitions of syncretism and mainline, traditional Christianity in terms of their use in the rest of my discussion. With the aid of secondary source research, I then discuss the origin, defining characteristics, and syncretic aspects of the seven examples. The religious cases I discuss are: I) Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Christ, 2) Easter Celebrations, 3) CaoDaism, 4) Unitarian Universalism, 5) the beliefs of the Aquarian Concepts Community, 6) Santeria, and 7) Baha’ism. Ultimately, this …

Analysis Of Rochester Institute Of Technology's United Way Campaign, Cheryl Lund Jan 1998

Analysis Of Rochester Institute Of Technology's United Way Campaign, Cheryl Lund

Theses

The United Way is an organization that exists for the purpose of helping people in need and bringing about positive social outcomes for the public good. Raising sufficient funds through donations continues to be a challenge in the face of decreasing public assistance, and increased cynicism in the United Way caused by the United Way scandal of 1992. The general downward trend of donations to non-profit organizations is reflected in the donations to the Rochester Institute of Technology's United Way campaign. In the past, employee participation in RIT's United Way campaign was 73%, which has been decreasing throughout the years …

Design Characteristics Unique To The Flexographic Printing Process, Barry Lee Jan 1998

Design Characteristics Unique To The Flexographic Printing Process, Barry Lee

Theses

The flexographic printing process has been used for package printing applications since the late 1800's. Recent improvements in the flexographic technology have enabled flexographic printers to compete in new market areas that have historically been served by roto-gravure or offset lithographic printing. Occurring simultaneously with the flexographic printing improvements has been the infusion of personal computer-based graphic design capabilities. Designers can optimize quality only when they understand the strengths and weaknesses of the printing process that will be used to mass produce their design. Desktop design capabilities and the need for flexographic print quality to match or exceed lithographic and …

Clint Eastwood And Equity: Popular Culture's Theory Of Revenge, William I. Miller Jan 1998

Clint Eastwood And Equity: Popular Culture's Theory Of Revenge, William I. Miller

Book Chapters

Revenge is not a publicly admissible motive for individual action. Church, state, and reason all line up against it. Officially revenge is thus sinful to the theologian, illegal to the prince, and irrational to the economist (it defies the rule of sunk costs). Order and peace depend upon its extirpation; salvation and rational political and economic arrangements on its denial. The official antivengeance discourse has a long history even preceding the Stoics, taken up and elaborated by medieval churchmen and later by the architects of state building.

Why Do Juries Get A Bum Rap: Reflections On The Work Of Valerie Hans, Richard O. Lempert Jan 1998

Why Do Juries Get A Bum Rap: Reflections On The Work Of Valerie Hans, Richard O. Lempert

Articles

The paper by Professor Valerie Hans that I have been asked to comment on examines the widespread expectation that jurors are prepared to hold businesses responsible in tort actions when they would not hold individual actors similarly responsible.1 Two reasons are commonly offered for this expectation. The first is that jurors naturally sympathize with individuals (like themselves) when people sue businesses, either because they identify with the plaintiffs as individuals or because they hold antibusiness attitudes. The second is that because businesses are often wealthy, a "deep pockets" effect exists such that jurors in negligence cases will find for undeserving …
