And They Killed No Enemy: Taiwan's Landmines, Joe Lokey Oct 1998

And They Killed No Enemy: Taiwan's Landmines, Joe Lokey

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Landmines are a remarkably wonderful little invention...from a military view. Since their systematic introduction to warfare doctrine in the spring of 1862 in the American Civil War, they have been used to deter, route, terrorize and harass opposing forces. Though their moral foundation has been in question since the beginning, little serious thought has been given to the effect of these perfect little soldiers on non-combatants--until recently. Our dark history provides numerous examples of the post-conflict madness inflicted by landmines and the other hubris of war on communities at peace. Rarely, however, do we find a case where landmines planted …

Effects Of Mutations In The Human Uncoupling Protein 3 Gene On The Respiratory Quotient And Fat Oxidation In Severe Obesity And Type 2 Diabetes, George Argyropoulos, Angela M. Brown, Steven M. Willi, Jianguo Zhu, Yufang He, Marc Reitman, Sahr M. Gevao, Ida Spruill, W. Timothy Garvey Oct 1998

Effects Of Mutations In The Human Uncoupling Protein 3 Gene On The Respiratory Quotient And Fat Oxidation In Severe Obesity And Type 2 Diabetes, George Argyropoulos, Angela M. Brown, Steven M. Willi, Jianguo Zhu, Yufang He, Marc Reitman, Sahr M. Gevao, Ida Spruill, W. Timothy Garvey

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

Human uncoupling protein 3 (UCP3) is a mitochondrial transmembrane carrier that uncouples oxidative ATP phosphorylation. With the capacity to participate in thermogenesis and energy balance, UCP3 is an important obesity candidate gene. A missense polymorphism in exon 3 (V102I) was identified in an obese and diabetic proband. A mutation introducing a stop codon in exon 4 (R143X) and a terminal polymorphism in the splice donor junction of exon 6 were also identified in a compound heterozygote that was morbidly obese and diabetic. Allele frequencies of the exon 3 and exon 6 splice junction polymorphisms were determined and found to be …

Dopamine Depletion Reorganizes Projections From The Nucleus Accumbens And Ventral Pallidum That Mediate Opioid-Induced Motor Activity, Lynn Churchill, Mark A. Klitenick, Peter W. Kalivas Oct 1998

Dopamine Depletion Reorganizes Projections From The Nucleus Accumbens And Ventral Pallidum That Mediate Opioid-Induced Motor Activity, Lynn Churchill, Mark A. Klitenick, Peter W. Kalivas

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

Motor activity elicited pharmacologically from the nucleus accumbens by the µ-opioid receptor agonist d-Ala-Tyr-Gly-NMePhe-Gly-OH (DAMGO) is augmented in rats sustaining dopamine depletions. GABAergic projections from the nucleus accumbens to ventral pallidum and ventral tegmental area (VTA) are involved because stimulation of GABAB receptors in the VTA (by baclofen) or GABAA receptors in the ventral pallidum (by muscimol) inhibit the motor response induced by the microinjection of DAMGO into the nucleus accumbens. The present study was done to determine which of these projections is mediating the augmented DAMGO-induced motor activity that follows 6-hydroxydopamine lesions of the nucleus accumbens. The inhibition of …

Data Standardization, Thomas Powell Oct 1998

Data Standardization, Thomas Powell

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

As the international community has placed increasing emphasis on efforts to identify, classify, neutralize, or remove landmines or other unexploded ordnance (UXO), the need to communicate information concerning the location, description, and hazards associated with these munitions has become apparent. Numerous database structures have been created to store information about the various munitions. However, different organizations, countries, or individuals have adopted their own unique data definitions and database structures, and these differences could affect the kinds of information available through these sources.

Fisheries Research Report No. 112 - Final Report, Frdc Project 94/075: Enhancement Of Yabby Production From Western Australian Farm Dams, Fisheries Western Australia, Fisheries Research And Development Corporation Oct 1998

Fisheries Research Report No. 112 - Final Report, Frdc Project 94/075: Enhancement Of Yabby Production From Western Australian Farm Dams, Fisheries Western Australia, Fisheries Research And Development Corporation

Fisheries Research Reports

Farmers receive higher prices per kilo for large yabbies. Yabby farmers have reported that the majority of yabbies trapped from farm dams are below market size (< 30 g) and therefore of no economic value. In addition, farmers also report that while dams produce large yabbies when first harvested, after a number of years the proportion of large animals gradually decreases.

To identify why yabbies in farm dams stunted and how farmers could increase the size of small yabbies the project had three main experimental areas.

Research station experiments: A field research station consisting of 25 ponds was constructed for running replicated, randomised and reproducible experiments, with controls, in an environment that simulated farm dams. In addition, these ponds were large enough to provide an adequate sample number of yabbies at realistic industry stocking …

Reports, Karl Niederer, Sabine Jessner, Carla Crosby, Erdmann Schmocker, Fred Moser, Ernest Thurston, Leo Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Review

At 10:00 A.M., President Karl I. Niederer called the business meeting to order. He expressed the Society's thanks to His Excellency, Ambassador Alfred Defago for hosting this meeting and to staff Member Ms. Florence Nicole for having so efficiently taken care of all the local arrangements. The Society has traditionally met here in Washington every third year. Our Washington meetings also mark the conclusion of outgoing officers' three-year terms and the election of new officers, so meeting in this place has a special significance. Mr. Niederer also expressed his deep appreciation to Ambassador and Mrs. Defago for welcoming us to …
