Flarr Pages #8: Spanish Teachers: Eliminate The Grammatical Paradigm To Facilitate Student Learning, Tom Washington

FLARR Pages

Since all textbooks present each new verb in this manner-and we, too, have learned with this approach -use of paradigm is assumed to be the best and possibly the only way to teach verbs.

The truth is that 1) the paradigm impedes the critical process of habit formation, 2) confronts the student with the false idea that one must learn six forms of each verb, and 3) causes unnecessary confusion and stress in the learning process.

Flarr Pages #11: Spanish: Teaching The "Musical Preterite", Tom Washington

FLARR Pages

If you were given the choice of learning 23 words or 95 words--and you knew that you would acquire the same amount of knowledge either way, which would you choose? That is the positive option that the "musical preterite" offers in teaching the simple past.

Flarr Pages #9: Teaching Preterite Vs. Imperfect In Spanish, Debra Maury

FLARR Pages

While textbooks have approached the troublesome practice of teaching the preterite and imperfect in a variety of ways, I have found that those that insist on a "Spanish-only" approach, working strictly in the target language, simply do not deliver the best results when it comes to student comprehension of the past tenses. A concept that does not exist in one's own native language (assuming here that it is English) can not be explained using the foreign language. The difference between preterite and imperfect seems to be one of the most difficult cases which is not best served by the modeling …

The World Wide Web (WWW) is a mysterious realm for many of us. However, every day, educators as well as students are presented with learning opportunities that can only be found using technology. Each minute, we become more aware of the possibilities that we have if we know how to use the web and how to work with it.

Physics & Astronomy

Recent interpretations of cusp energetic ions observed by the POLAR spacecraft have suggested a new energization process in the cusp [Chen et al., 1997; 1998]. Simultaneous enhancement of H+, He+2, and O>+2 fluxes indicates that they are of solar wind origin. In the present study, we examine H+ and He+2 energy spectra from 20 eV to several 100 keV measured by the Hydra, Toroidal Imaging Mass-Angle Spectrograph (TIMAS), and Charge and Mass Magnetospheric Ion Composition Experiment (CAMMICE) on POLAR. The combined spectrum for each species is shown to be continuous with a …

Health And Wellness Among Adults With Developmental Disabilities, Ann Szalda-Petree Ph.D., Meg A. Traci Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute Rural Institute

Health and Wellness

In 1988, the National Council on Disability published Toward Independence, which identified the prevention of secondary conditions and health promotion for people with disabilities as a major national goal. During the last ten years this goal has grown in importance, with U.S. service corporations and agencies, researchers, policy makers, and even private industry acknowledging its wisdow. An entire section of Healthy People 2010, the nation’s blueprint for promoting the health of the entire population, addresses disability and health. Previous editions in the series contained no explicit sections on disability. Now, disability has its own section, with 12 specific objectives and …
