The Influence Of Loop Current Perturbations On The Formation And Evolution Of Tortugas Eddies In The Southern Straits Of Florida, Paula S. Fratantoni, Thomas N. Lee, Guillermo P. Podesta, Frank E. Muller-Karger Oct 1998

The Influence Of Loop Current Perturbations On The Formation And Evolution Of Tortugas Eddies In The Southern Straits Of Florida, Paula S. Fratantoni, Thomas N. Lee, Guillermo P. Podesta, Frank E. Muller-Karger

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Large cyclonic eddies on the northern edge of the Florida Current are the dominant mesoscale features within the southern Straits of Florida. The most prominent of these features is a quasi-stationary eddy that forms near the Dry Tortugas. Our observations, compiled from 3 years of advanced very high resolution radiometer measurements in the Straits of Florida and Gulf of Mexico, demonstrate a strong relationship between the generation of anticyclonic rings from the Gulf of Mexico Loop Current and the evolution of Tortugas eddies within the southern Straits of Florida. In six cases, Tortugas eddies evolve from cyclonic frontal eddies which …

Ocean Color Chlorophyll Algorithms For Seawifs, John E. O'Reilly, Stephane Maritorena, B. Greg Mitchell, David A. Siegel, Kendall L. Carder, Sara A. Garver, Mati Kahru, Charles Mcclain

Marine Science Faculty Publications

A large data set containing coincident in situ chlorophyll and remote sensing reflectance measurements was used to evaluate the accuracy, precision, and suitability of a wide variety of ocean color chlorophyll algorithms for use by SeaWiFS (Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor). The radiance-chlorophyll data were assembled from various sources during the SeaWiFS Bio-optical Algorithm Mini-Workshop (SeaBAM) and is composed of 919 stations encompassing chlorophyll concentrations between 0.019 and 32.79 mu g L-1. Most of the observations are from Case I nonpolar waters, and similar to 20 observations are from more turbid coastal waters. A variety of statistical and graphical criteria were …

The Voice: 1991-2000

Student group Environmental Concerns of Students sponsored "Rainforest Week" in order to raise campus awareness concerning environmental issues. An article recaps a panel discussion on domestic violence sponsored by the Every Woman's House. Campus wide survey conducted reveals that 49 percent of Wooster students engage in binge drinking, seven percent higher than the national average. The College dedicates the oldest building on campus for the third time. Frick Hall, is officially reopened as the Timken Science library. Additionally, the issue includes a piece that calls for further action to be made in fight against discrimination of sexual minorities on campus.

Deriving Of Single Intensive Picosecond Optical Pulses From A High-Power Gain-Switched Laser Diode By Spectral Filtering, S. N. Vainshtein, Grigory Simin, J. T. Kostamovaara Oct 1998

Deriving Of Single Intensive Picosecond Optical Pulses From A High-Power Gain-Switched Laser Diode By Spectral Filtering, S. N. Vainshtein, Grigory Simin, J. T. Kostamovaara

Faculty Publications

Single 25 ps/16 W optical pulses were achieved by spectral filtering from a multiheterostructure gain-switched laser diode with its quasisteady-state modes suppressed by a factor of 103 as compared with the peak power. A significant transient spectrum broadening makes this possible provided that a very high dI/dt rate of the pumping current pulse is used. A simple numerical model is suggested which describes adequately both the spectral and transient features of the observed phenomenon. It follows from the model that single picosecond optical pulses can be obtained from any type of high power semiconductor laser.

Luminescence Properties Of Thin Film Ta2 Zn3 O8 And Mn Doped Ta2 Zn3 O8, Philip D. Rack, Michael D. Potter, Santosh Kurinec, Wounjhang Park, John Penczek, Brent K. Wagner, Christopher J. Summers Oct 1998

Luminescence Properties Of Thin Film Ta2 Zn3 O8 And Mn Doped Ta2 Zn3 O8, Philip D. Rack, Michael D. Potter, Santosh Kurinec, Wounjhang Park, John Penczek, Brent K. Wagner, Christopher J. Summers

Articles

Blue luminescence from TaZZn30g and green luminescence from Mn doped TaZZn30g has been observed under low voltage cathodoluminescent excitation, In this article , the luminescence mechanisms of TaZZn30g and Mn doped TaZZn30 g are discussed in detail. The results suggest that the intrinsic blue luminescence of TaZZn30g results from a metal-to-ligand transition, whereas the green luminescence of Mn doped TaZZn30g results from the Mn 4T 1-6A I transition. The suppression of the blue intrinsic luminescence in Mn doped TaZZn30g suggests that efficient energy transfer from the host material to the Mn occurs. This energy transfer phenomenon is also discussed by …

Distortional Buckling Formulae For Thin Walled Channel And Z-Sections With Return Lips, John T. Merrick, Gregory J. Hancock, M. R. Bamach Oct 1998

Distortional Buckling Formulae For Thin Walled Channel And Z-Sections With Return Lips, John T. Merrick, Gregory J. Hancock, M. R. Bamach

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Cold-formed Channel- and Z-sections subject to both flexure and torsion may undergo distortional buckling where the flange and lip rotate about the flange/web junction. This mode of failure is prevalent in purlin sections when lateral deformation of the section is prevented and when the sections are manufactured from high strength steel. In an attempt to prevent distortional buckling, some manufacturers have added additional return lips to the flange lips to produce complex edge stiffeners. The Australian/New Zealand Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Structures includes design rules for determining the distortional buckling strength of cold-formed beam and column sections. These design rules …

Laterally Braced Cold-Formed Steel Flexural Members With Edge Stiffened Flanges, Benjamin W. Schafer, Teoman Pekoz Oct 1998

Laterally Braced Cold-Formed Steel Flexural Members With Edge Stiffened Flanges, Benjamin W. Schafer, Teoman Pekoz

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

The moment capacity of a laterally braced cold-formed steel flexural member with edge stiffened flanges (e.g., a channel or zee section) may be adversely affected by local or distortional buckling. Traditional design methods recognize the need to explicitly account for local buckling, but not distortional buckling. Experimental data and numerical analyses suggest that proper strength prediction of laterally braced cold-formed steel flexural members requires explicit treatment of distortional buckling. New procedures for hand prediction of the buckling stress in the local and distortional mode are presented. Numerical investigations are employed to highlight post-buckling behavior unique to the distortional mode. A …

Factors Influencing The Strength Of Mechanical Clinching, Remo Pedreschi, Braj Sinha, Russell Davies, Rory Lennon Oct 1998

Factors Influencing The Strength Of Mechanical Clinching, Remo Pedreschi, Braj Sinha, Russell Davies, Rory Lennon

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

The influence of material strength and thickness, direction of load, multi-layer connections and dis-similar thicknesses of steel on the strength of mechanical clinching is considered.. Expressions to predict the strength of mechanical clinching are presented.
