Reconstructing Predevelopment Conditions Of Lake Worth Creek Using Historical Maps, Accounts, And Aerial Photography, Susan O. Farnsworth Jan 1998

Reconstructing Predevelopment Conditions Of Lake Worth Creek Using Historical Maps, Accounts, And Aerial Photography, Susan O. Farnsworth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This thesis develops a technique that combines the use of historical geography with photo interpretation and physical geography to reconstruct the predevelopment landcover of an urban area in southeastern Florida. This technique differs from traditional map making methods by utilizing Geographic Information System modeling procedures to create a conceptual map and test it against independent historical maps and accounts. Historical maps and accounts provided new information about the historic landscape that could not be deferred from present physiographic information. The resulting maps had more detail about the most highly altered areas than the conceptual map created from physiographic information.

This thesis deals with remote database access over the Internet. Three different approaches to remote database access, the CGI-based approach, the Oracle Webserver-based approach and the CORBA-based approach, are discussed. Experiments are conducted to compare the pros and cons of each approach. The Oracle database and Microsoft Access database are utilized as the target database systems. For the CGI-based approach, the CGI programs are coded with ProC, Oracle's SQL-embedded C language, in Microsoft Visual C++ developer's studio, and a Student Record example is demonstrated. For the Oracle Webserver-based approach, the Oracle Webserver 1.1 has been setup and an Online Shopping …

Simulation Study Of Mobile Computing Protocols, Syed Alamdar Ahson Jan 1998

Simulation Study Of Mobile Computing Protocols, Syed Alamdar Ahson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

With the advent of cellular technology and portable computers we are on the verge of a new computing paradigm. This computing paradigm is now widely known as "mobile" or "nomadic" computing. Mobile systems frequently change their point of attachment to the network. Mobile computing systems also need to communicate with the existing pool of information and file servers. Mobility defies the very principles that the TCP/IP protocol suite is based on. We study the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Mobile IPv4 protocol and find it to be a highly scale solution. We study some of the other proposed mobile IP …

Second Order Leaky Bucket Algorithm For Traffic Shaping In Atm Networks, Atul. Bansal Jan 1998

Second Order Leaky Bucket Algorithm For Traffic Shaping In Atm Networks, Atul. Bansal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) Networks are based on connections that are multiplexed dynamically on a single link. For satisfactory performance in an ATM network, congestion control is extremely necessary to guarantee the negotiated Quality of Service (QoS) for every connection. Traffic shaping is a congestion control mechanism that alters the traffic characteristics of a stream of cells on a connection to achieve better network efficiency by meeting the QoS objectives. We study a model for Traffic Shaping, Second Order Leaky Bucket, which consists of two leaky buckets to police the Sustained Cell Rate (SCR) and Burst Tolerance (BT) for each …

Sediment Layer Tracking Using Neural Networks, Vincent Nicolas Freyermuth Jan 1998

Sediment Layer Tracking Using Neural Networks, Vincent Nicolas Freyermuth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The detection of sediment layer interfaces in normal incidence acoustic reflection data is a requirement for automatic classification and geologic mapping of subsurface layers. The detection is difficult because of the constructive and destructive interference caused by the impedance changes in the sediment column and high scattering noise levels. The purpose of this work is to implement a procedure using neural networks that automatically detects the sediment layers from the envelope of acoustic reflections. The data was collected using a sub-bottom profiler that transmits a 2 to 10 kHz FM pulse. The detection procedure is a three step method: a …

Watershed Delineation In A Low Topographic Relief Landscape Of South Florida, Michael T. Rose Jan 1998

Watershed Delineation In A Low Topographic Relief Landscape Of South Florida, Michael T. Rose

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Watershed delineations in low topographic relief landscapes with canal networks require hydrography. This hypothesis was tested by utilizing digital elevation models (DEMs). Seven DEMs were processed using two automated delineation methods. Both methods include filling of localized sinks, but an enhanced method incorporated incremental "tipping" to provide flow direction. In two watersheds studied, DEMs with only topography delineated watersheds within 24% and 84% of the manual delineation. With the addition of hydrography, including canals, both watersheds were delineated to within 85% and 92% of the manual delineation. Contrary to the assumption that tipping would improve delineation, tipping decreased the delineated …

West German Secondary School Education On The Holocaust, Martin Eric Vann Jan 1998

West German Secondary School Education On The Holocaust, Martin Eric Vann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

After World War II, Germany lay in ruins, both physically and morally. The Allies attempted denazification, but were unable to completely reform the educational system. Cold War exigencies dictated that lessons on the Nazi era, particularly the cruelties of the Holocaust, be soft-pedaled. While some German politicians urged greater openness, collective amnesia reigned for over a decade. Early texts showed Germans as mesmerized by Hitler, who, together with a few henchmen, was responsible for the mass murders. Gradually, as democracy took root in West Germany, educators responded to the changing political culture by teaching more of the true nature of …

Patterns Of Time, Place, And Culture: Land Use Zoning In Portland, Oregon, 1918-1924, Meg Merrick Jan 1998

Patterns Of Time, Place, And Culture: Land Use Zoning In Portland, Oregon, 1918-1924, Meg Merrick

Dissertations and Theses

Until recently, few have questioned the notion that the separation of uses in land use zoning is inherently correct. Many observers of the city are now suggesting that zoning, as it has been practiced in this country over the last 80 years, has created cities that are fractured and function poorly. Others propose that zoning should be reconsidered as a remedy for urban dysfunction. They suggest that the whole notion of zoning be rethought.

The purpose of this study is to uncover some of the underlying rationales and methodologies that set the model for zoning. This study examines the rationales …

Assessment Of Bond For Cathodically Polarized Pretensioning Steel In Concrete, Knut Herman Dohlen Jan 1998

Assessment Of Bond For Cathodically Polarized Pretensioning Steel In Concrete, Knut Herman Dohlen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Pretensioned concrete members require a certain bond strength between the steel and concrete to maintain prestress force. Previous studies have indicated that when reinforcing steel in concrete is cathodically polarized, a chemical change of the cement near the steel-concrete interface occurs; and this can reduce the bond strength. In the present research experiments were conducted with concrete specimens that contained either a non-stressed seven wire steel tendon or a single strand through the longitudinal direction. The specimens were cathodically polarized with current densities ranging between 50 and 2500 mA/m^2 of steel. Upon achieving a pre-determined charge density transfer, the steel …

Analysis Of The Performance Of A Loop Radiator And A Spiral Applicator At Low Rf Frequencies, John M. Roman Jan 1998

Analysis Of The Performance Of A Loop Radiator And A Spiral Applicator At Low Rf Frequencies, John M. Roman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This thesis addresses the electromagnetic analyses of two structures. The first structure, a low frequency loop antenna recommended for use by national standards on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), is incorrectly specified to have the same voltage to magnetic field conversion ratio (antenna factor) when used with a 50 ohm receiver in lieu of a high impedance type ($>$600 ohm). Two independent measurement sets were performed to demonstrate the prevailing discrepancy, and a corrected antenna factor is presented for use with a 50 ohm receiver. The second structure, a partial spiral "pancake" applicator used to generate high EM fields in its …

Atomic Spies: The Soviet Penetration Of The Manhattan Project's Los Alamos Laboratory, Christopher G. Cabrera Jan 1998

Atomic Spies: The Soviet Penetration Of The Manhattan Project's Los Alamos Laboratory, Christopher G. Cabrera

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The intelligence services of the Soviet Union capitalized on several factors that facilitated their successful penetration of Los Alamos Laboratory, allowing them access to the secrets of the atomic bomb. The freedoms enjoyed in a democratic society, the appeal of communism, and the special considerations of wartime presented an environment in the United States conducive for the development and operation of Soviet spy networks. While these conditions did present the Soviets with circumstances favorable for espionage work, the foremost reason for the Soviet Union's skillful theft of atomic secrets from Los Alamos Laboratory involved the fact that they had help …

Convenient State Machine Formalism For High-Level Control Of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles, Anouck Renee Girard Jan 1998

Convenient State Machine Formalism For High-Level Control Of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles, Anouck Renee Girard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Recent successes in Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) technology have generated demand for broader, more general use of these vehicles, along with demand for longer, more complicated missions. However, AUVs are becoming more complex, and hence more difficult to program, test and maintain. A discrete event system would provide conditional execution for mission management, failure detection, and resource allocation techniques. The goal of this thesis is to provide a convenient formalism for discrete event systems that reduces the apparent complexity of the system while maintaining its robust capabilities. The chosen formalism allows the convenient representation of hierarchies of concurrent hierarchical state …

Design And Control Of Spherical Gimbal For Laser Tracking System, Yingli. Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

To assess and improve the accuracy of an intelligent machine such as a precision robot and a computer numerically controlled machine tool, it is exceedingly desirable to have a high performance Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM). Among various coordinate measuring devices, a laser tracking CMM has the advantages of noninvasiveness and extremely high precision over a large workspace. In this dissertation, we concentrate on the design and control of a new type of spherical gimbal for laser tracking system, whose motion is constrained by two spherical surfaces and whose axes are motorized. By this design, principal errors of a conventional tracking …

Ecological Impact Of Arsenic, Chromium And Lead From Application Of Recovered Screened Material On Florida Soils, Dimitrios. Scarlatos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Disposal of construction and demolition (C&D) debris is a major problem. During recycling operations, the debris is passed over screens, generating what is called Recovered Screened Material (RSM). Previous analyses of RSM indicated high arsenic (As) levels. Thus, RSM is disposed in landfills in spite of the fact that natural soils may contain As levels higher than the proposed concentrations for soil clean-up goals. RSM samples were collected and analyzed from seven C&D debris recycling facilities and from other sites. The average arsenic content found in RSM ranged between residential and industrial clean-up goals. Chromium and lead levels in RSM …

Estimation Of Atmospheric Gaseous Absorption Using Surface And Radiosonde Meteorological Measurements, Ritsuko Hamahata Pollard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

For radiowave propagation on earth-space communication links at high frequencies such as Ka-band, the effect of atmospheric gaseous absorption (mainly due to oxygen and water vapor) is the primary cause of attenuation. This thesis examines the applicability of the surface based Crane's model currently employed by the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) propagation experiment for estimation of attenuation due to atmospheric gaseous absorption (AGA), developed for Oklahoma, to sub-tropical climate regions such as Florida. The Microwave Propagation Model is used as a basis of comparison since it uses the direct atmospheric measurements (temperature, relative humidity, and pressure) made at different …
