Abandonment, Neglect, And Poverty As Reflected In The Novels Of Charles Dickens, Melissa K. Smith Jan 1998

Abandonment, Neglect, And Poverty As Reflected In The Novels Of Charles Dickens, Melissa K. Smith

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Biographers have written numerous accounts of the events of Charles Dickens's life, and critics have made some interesting observations about Dickens's novels and the characters he depicts in those novels. For example, these critics discuss characters who represent different people Dickens encountered in his life, familial relationships as presented in the novels, and Dickens's attack on various institutions and ideas, such as the Poor Laws, the legal system, and the industrial revolution. There are few references, however, to the influence on his writing of two major experiences in Dickens's childhood, neglect and abandonment by his family, and poverty. I have …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A Universal Amperometric Membrane-Covered Gas-Sensing Electrode System has been designed which can be used with a wide variety of electrochemical sensors. The system is composed of two parts: an electrode detection unit consists of an Intel 8051 microprocessor as the control unit which receives operational commands through the serial port of a personal computer. The assembly language has been written and is embedded in a 32K EPROM and the data collected are temporarily stored in a 32K RAM. A potentiostat with an auto-adjustable 100 nA to 100 {dollar}\\mu{dollar}A range is used to polarize the electrode. A 12 bit D/A convertor …

Factors Contributing To Landslide Activity In The Winter Of 1995-96, Clearwater County Near Orofino, Idaho, Aaron Paul Wisher Jan 1998

Factors Contributing To Landslide Activity In The Winter Of 1995-96, Clearwater County Near Orofino, Idaho, Aaron Paul Wisher

All Master's Theses

Significant landslide activity occurred in Clearwater County, Idaho in November 1995 and February-May 1996. Mass wasting in the study area consisted of debris slides and earthflows triggered by rain-on-snow weather events. It is important to determine what factors contribute to landsliding in this area so that reliable prediction can reduce the destruction of property. Through field observation and aerial photo analysis, the factors contributing to landslides were studied. The objectives included a study of the geology, soils, aspect, slope gradient, vegetation and slope position related to each slide. Also a goal was to assess the role of land use in …

Speaking Of The Hindu Diaspora In Australia, Purushottama Bilimoria Jan 1998

Speaking Of The Hindu Diaspora In Australia, Purushottama Bilimoria

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

What are the distinctive characteristics of the "Diaspora Hindus" who turned up during the different phases in the Australian landscape? To address this question, this essay will briefly discuss the early, colonial, post-independent, and more recent phases corresponding to patterns in migration, settlement, and temple culture of Australian Hindus, drawing on the history of their reception in the host society alongside other data, from the 1857 to 1996 national censuses.

The Effect Of Various Shoulder And Elbow Positions On Grip Strength, Melanie Wentz Jan 1998

The Effect Of Various Shoulder And Elbow Positions On Grip Strength, Melanie Wentz

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

This study investigated the effect of various shoulder and elbow positions on grip strength in 42 subjects. Both dominant and non-dominant upper extremities were tested using the Jamar dynamometer. The subjects were tested in the following positions while standing: 1) 90 degrees shoulder flexion and 90 degrees elbow flexion, 2) 90 degrees shoulder flexion and full elbow extension, 3) 90 degrees shoulder abduction and 90 degrees elbow flexion, and 4) 90 degrees shoulder abduction and full elbow extension. A repeated-measures ANOVA showed that shoulder and elbow position does significantly (p<.05) affect grip strength. A significant difference between genders was found for each position and hand dominance was significant (p<.05) for position 2. Both males and females were strongest with their shoulder in 90 degrees of flexion. The findings suggest that 90 degrees of shoulder flexion may be more of a position of function than 90 degrees of abduction. When measuring grip strength, position of testing and gender are two important variables to consider when trying to help patients attain their highest grip strength score.

Tensile Properties Of The Autogenous Quadruple-Stranded Semitendinosus-Gracilis Graft Used For Reconstruction Of The Anterior Cruciate Ligament, James E. Swanton Jan 1998

Tensile Properties Of The Autogenous Quadruple-Stranded Semitendinosus-Gracilis Graft Used For Reconstruction Of The Anterior Cruciate Ligament, James E. Swanton

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

The purpose of this study was to further enhance the knowledge of autogenous tissues around the knee which are used for reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Ten fresh-frozen cadaveric knee specimens were used to conduct this experiment. The semitendinosus and gracilis tendons, as well as the bone-patellar tendon-bone complex, were excised and prepared for testing. The semitendinosus and gracilis tendons were doubled and fashioned into a quadruple-stranded graft. The tissue units were then individually fixated in a tensile testing apparatus and tested to failure. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze and compare our data with similar studies to …

Hamstring Tendons As Autograft Replacements In Acl Reconstructions: A Review Of The Literature, Jason Anderson Jan 1998

Hamstring Tendons As Autograft Replacements In Acl Reconstructions: A Review Of The Literature, Jason Anderson

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Hamstring tendons have gained a great deal of acceptance in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction procedures in the 1990's, but some misconceptions concerning the ability of hamstring grafts to successfully replace ruptured ACLs still exist. More surgeons are using hamstring tendons to reconstruct ACL-deficient knees because their harvest does not disrupt the extensor mechanism of the knee. Enthusiasts of the hamstring graft believe that it promotes quicker return of quadriceps strength and knee range of motion without a prevalence of postoperative pateIIofemoral symptoms.

The purpose of this review is to dispute the concerns that exist concerning the initial tensile strength, …

The Return Of Lake Agassiz: The University Of North Dakota And The Flood Of 1997, Jan M. Orvik, Richard P. Larson Jan 1998

The Return Of Lake Agassiz: The University Of North Dakota And The Flood Of 1997, Jan M. Orvik, Richard P. Larson

UND Publications

On April 19, 1997, Grand Forks and East Grand Forks were overtaken by the largest flood seen in the cities in modern times. Tens of thousands abandoned their homes. Scattered throughout the region, they could do little more than wait for news reports and worry about what they would find when the waters subsided. At the University of North Dakota, the academic year had come to an abrupt end. Students, faculty and staff were among the evacuated. A small group of UND personnel now had to decide how to protect, as much as possible, an institution worth hundreds of millions …

Personality And Practice Settings, Glen K. Teramoto Jan 1998

Personality And Practice Settings, Glen K. Teramoto

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

The field of physical therapy has had substantial growth this decade and is considered one of the best career choices. One reason for this growth is the implementation of physical therapy in new settings. Physical therapists are no longer restricted to the traditional hospitals and rehabilitation settings as choices. Today, physical therapists can choose to practice in more dynamic settings such as the public school system, sports acceleration and rehabilitation facilities, aqua-therapy, hippotherapy, and industrial facilities. The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a correlation between personality traits and the practice settings for the University of …

Women, War, And Words: The Gender Component In The Permanent International Criminal Court's Definition Of Crimes Against Humanity, Brook Sari Moshan Jan 1998

Women, War, And Words: The Gender Component In The Permanent International Criminal Court's Definition Of Crimes Against Humanity, Brook Sari Moshan

Fordham International Law Journal

This Comment addresses the intersection of gender issues and human rights law as illustrated by the formation of the permanent ICC. Specifically, it argues that the inclusion of gender- motivated crimes in the ICC's definition of crimes against humanity was necessary to emphasize women's wartime experiences and injuries, but that such inclusion is not enough to ensure gender justice as the ICC begins to prosecute war crimes and crimes against humanity. Part I of this Comment discusses the concept of gender-based crimes and illustrates these crimes through recent examples of gender-based violence. It also reviews the history of the ICC, …

Measurement Of The Fraction Of Hadronic Z Decays Into Charm Quark Pairs, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas Jan 1998

Measurement Of The Fraction Of Hadronic Z Decays Into Charm Quark Pairs, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The full statistics of hadronic Z decays collected with the ALEPH detector are analysed to measure, by three methods, the ratio, RcRc, of the partial decay width of the Z into cc¯cc¯ quarks to the total hadronic width. One method uses the inclusive pp and p⊥p⊥ spectra of electrons. The other two use a double-tagging technique to measure RcRc independently of the charm-tagging efficiency. In one, the tagging procedure uses the reconstruction of high momentum charmed mesons (D∗+D∗+, D+D+ and \({\rm D^0}$) to detect the charm quarks. In the other, a charm quark is tagged from the D∗D∗'s reconstructed in …

Searches For Charginos And Neutralinos In E+E- Collisions At √S = 161 And 172 Gev, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas Jan 1998

Searches For Charginos And Neutralinos In E+E- Collisions At √S = 161 And 172 Gev, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The data recorded by the ALEPH detector at centre-of-mass energies of 161, 170, and 172 GeV are analysed for signals of chargino and neutralino production. No evidence of a signal is found, although candidate events consistent with the expectations from Standard Model processes are observed. Limits at 95% C.L. on the production cross sections are derived and bounds on the parameters of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model are set. The lower limit on the mass of the lightest ch is 85.5 GeV/c2GeV/c2 for gaugino-like charginos (μ=−500GeV/c2μ=−500GeV/c2), and 85.0 GeV/c2GeV/c2 for Higgsino-like charginos (M2=500GeV/c2M2=500GeV/c2), for heavy sneutrinos (Mν~≥200GeV/c2Mν~≥200GeV/c2) and tanβ=2–√tan⁡β=2. Study Of B0s Oscillations And Lifetime Using Fully Reconstructed D̄S Decays, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas Jan 1998

Study Of B0s Oscillations And Lifetime Using Fully Reconstructed D̄S Decays, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A search for B0sBs0 oscillations is performed using approximately 4 million Z→qq¯Z→qq¯ events collected by the ALEPH experiment during 1991–1995. B0sBs0 candidates are partially reconstructed by combining tracks with fully reconstructed D−sDs− candidates. The B0sBs0 production flavour is estimated from the sign of the opposite hemisphere charge, a fragmentation kaon in the same hemisphere, or a lepton in the opposite hemisphere. From a total sample of 1620 candidates, with a B0sBs0 purity estimated to be 22%, all values of ΔmsΔms below 3.9 ps−1−1 and between 6.5 and 8.8 ps−1−1 are excluded at 95% CL. From the same sample, the B0sBs0 …
