Tapeinosperma Alatum (Myrsinaceae): A Remarkable New Species From Ceram, Diane Holland, P.F. Stevens

A new pachycaul species Tapeinosperma alatum D.E. Holland & P.F. Stevens (Myrsinaceae) is described from South Central Ceram. It is characterized by its huge leaves, over 1 m long, and congested, almost Gunnera-like. inflorescence. The distinctive distribution of the Papuasian pachycaul species of Tapeinosperma is briefly compared with that of a number of other unrelated taxa.

Northwest Arkansas is the seventh fastest developing area in the nation. The conversion of rolling pastureland into paved city streets, parking lots, and buildings within this rapidly urbanizing region is reducing infiltration and intensifying stormwater runoff. In the city of Fayetteville alone, the population increased from 42,099 to 58,163 between 1990 and 1999, moving the city across the population threshold which will require the Phase II Stormwater Permit process. Approximately half of Fayetteville is included in the Illinois River Watershed, which has been identified as the third highest priority watershed in need of restoration in the state of Arkansas. The Midgut Lectin-Trypsin Complex Of Glossina Morsitans Morsitans Westwood (Diptera:Glossinidae): Sites Of Sythesis And Its Role In The Differentition Of Trypanosoma Brucei (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae), Godwin Mufwa Mannex Zimba

An agglutinin with trypsin activity was purified from the midgut extracts of Glossina morsitans morsitans Westwood using a combination of ion exchange and affinity column chromatography procedures. The molecule had a native apparent molecular weight (Mr) of -65,700 and consisted of two non-covalently linked subunits; an a. subunit (-28,800 Da) and a B subunit (~35,700 Da). The B subunit was shown to have a glycosyl residue. This agglutinin had a bloodstream trypanosome agglutination titre of 64 and a trypsin specific activity of 69 .3 μmoles/min./mg protein. The molecule compared favourably with the lectin-trypsin, complex previously purified from the midgut of …

This study was conducted on Glossina fuscipes fuscipes, a riverine species of Central and Eastern Africa. It focuses on (i) colour preferences, (ii) landing and feeding behaviours on a host, the Nile monitor and (iii) on the trappability in odour- and colour-baited traps. Colour preferences were studied using electric screens in the field. Colours that were found most attractive were combined to make traps. These traps were tested as visual baits, compared to the standard biconical trap Challier Laveissiere (1977). The performance of the most successful trap type was analyzed in relation with fly sex and fly abundance. It was …

Studies were commenced to investigate the potential use of the fungi, Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae and the attraction-aggregation-attachment pheromone (AAAP) for the control of Amblyomma variegatum. The objectives of the study were threefold: to determine the range of perception of the optimal dose of the pheromone with and without carbon-dioxide. in the field; to investigate if there were any synergistic or additive effects of B. bassiana and M anisopliae on A. variegatum; and to develop and test a device which could be used for pheromone delivery and infection of ticks by the fungi. Hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of Commiphora swynertonii Burtt., Turraea cormicopia (L), T abyssinica, T. floribunda and Melia volkensii Gurke were tested for anti-tick activity against the larvae and adult Rhipicephalus appendiculatus Neuman using the packet method bioassay. The hydrodistilled oil of the leaves of C. swynertonii was tested for acaricidal and repellency activities against ! adult R. appendiculatus using the packet and climbing bioassay method, respectively. sexual receptivity was investigated in glossing morsitans orsitans and glossing pallidipes by observing successful pairings of females for specified periods of time .the duration of copulation, degree of insemination of females and male accessory reproductive gland secretions were not responsible for the termination of sexual receptivi ty in aorsitans. however, mechanical stimulation due mainly to the onset of the 'male jerking phase • was the single most important factor responsible for refractoriness of feaales to further matings. technical stimulation alone caused over 70% refractoriness within 72 hours. this result is comparable to that of normal matings where mechanical stimulation is …

Trypanosomiasis is one of the major factors that hinder development of rural economies in Africa. The diseases in Africa. The disease is endemic in some of the most potentially productive lands of tropical Africa where it severely constrains livestock production and human settlement. This experiment examined the effects of physical appearance on level of attraction between people of the opposite sex. Level of attraction was measured using a questionnaire that included a picture of an attractive or unattractive stimulus person. The participants consisted of 57 university undergraduate students. They viewed the stimulus person, and then answered questions based on their attraction to and on how willing they would be to participate in various activities with that person. The beginning of the 1990's brought with it increased attention to what is becoming the most talked about disorder of childhood and adolescence, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This disorder is estimated to afflict between 3% and 9% of the entire United States school-aged population. The most common treatment consist of behavior modification, cognitive therapy, diet restrictions and food supplements, cognitive and social skill training, psychosocial interventions, interpersonal problem solving and prescription medicine such as Ritalin.

The literature on stimulant medication and psychosocial treatments for children with ADHD suggest that no single method of treatment alone yields significant long-term therapeutic …

Within the past few years, the number of “new” human diseases associated with small-mammal reservoirs has increased dramatically, stimulating renewed interest in reservoir ecology research. A consistent, integrative approach to such research allows direct comparisons between studies, contributes to the efficient use of resources and data, and increases investigator safety. We outline steps directed toward understanding vertebrate host ecology as it relates to human disease and illustrate the relevance of each step by using examples from studies of hosts associated with rodent-borne hemorrhagic fever viruses.

Dietary habits of five common rodents in agroecosystems on the central Argentine Pampa were studied for 15 months using microhistological analysis of stomach contents. All five rodent species were omnivorous, but proportions of major dietary items (arthropods, dicot leaves and seeds, monocot leaves and seeds) varied among species and seasons. Akodon azarae largely was entomophagous; arthropods formed 41-62% of the diet in all seasons. The other four species (Calomys musculinus, Calomys laucha, Bolomys obscurus, and Oligoryzomys flavescens) consumed most diet items throughout the year, but relative proportions varied among seasons. The major surface circumsporozoite (CS) proteins are known to play a role in malaria sporozoite development and invasion of invertebrate and vertebrate host cells. Plasmodium vivax CS protein processing during mosquito midgut oocyst and salivary gland sporozoite development was studied using monoclonal antibodies which recognize different CS protein epitopes. Monoclonal antibodies which react with the CS amino acid repeat sequences by ELISA recognized a 50- kDa precursor protein in immature oocyst and additional 47- and 42- kDa proteins in older oocysts. Abstract

The method of photonic band structure is used to calculate the frequencies of light that propagate in lattice models of the cornea and sclera of the mammalian eye, providing an explanation for transparency in the cornea that first properly accounts for multiple scattering of light. Each eye tissue is modeled as an ordered array of collagen rods, and photonic band structure methods are used to solve Maxwell's equations exactly for these models, a procedure that automatically effectively includes all orders of multiple scattering.
