Since June 1982 we have studied various aspects of red bat ecology in Arkansas with emphasis on field work in the Ouachita Mountains and examination of specimens submitted to the Arkansas Department of Health Rabies Laboratory (ADHRL).This study reports on continued field work in the Ouachita Mountains using radiotelemetry and updates information regarding red bats submitted to the ADHRL through December 1996. In addition, we revisited a cave previously reported to contain a large number of red bat skull and skeletal remains. We also report remains from another cave system in northcentral Arkansas. Impact Of Temperature Acclimation On Photosynthesis In The Toxic Red-Tide Dinoflagellate Alexandrium Fundyense (Ca28), Oscar Schofield, Joseph Grzymski, Mark A. Moline, Raffael J.M. Jovine

This study assessed the impact of temperature on the photosynthetic activity in the dinoflagellate Alexandrium fundyense (Ca28) for cultures grown at 75 µmol photons m^–2 s^–1 over a range of temperatures. Increasing light intensity under static temperatures caused a 5-fold decrease in the maximum quantum yield for photosystern II (PSII) (F_vlF_m) Carbon fixation rates mirrored high-light depressions in (F_vlF_m). Cells in the presence of streptomycin showed an 83% recovery in (F_vlF_m); therefore, only a minor proportion of the decline in (F_vlF_m)was attributable …

Photoadaptive Response During The Development Of A Coastal Antarctic Diatom Bloom And Relationship To Water Column Stability, Mark A. Moline

The ratio of the xanthophyll pigments diadinoxanthin and diatoxanthin to chlorophyll a [(DD + DT): Chl a] was used as a photoadaptive index during the development of a large Antarctic diatom bloom. This index was found to track fluctuations in the incident solar irradiance and the in situ light field over a 3-order-magnitude change in the water column biomass. Depth profiles of the (DD + DT): Chl a ratio showed that the upper mixed layer, assessed by physical data, was in fact stable over the course of the month. Four general postfire successional pathways leading to a climax Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmmlilii Parry)-subalpine fir (Abies /asiocarpa [Hook] Nutt.) forest operate on the T.W. Daniel Experimental Forest in northern Utah. Depending on the successional pathway followed. reestablishment of the prefire climax forest will take 200 to 400 years or more due to a rarity of extreme burning conditions. During the long period between catastrophic stand-replacing fires, a variety of other natural disturbances contribute to the varying structure and composition of vegetation and the fuel mosaic in internountain subalpine spruce-fir forests. Chemistry and Biochemistry

Work from our laboratory on vibrational sum frequency spectroscopic investigations of molecular ordering at the carbon tetrachloride-water interface is reviewed. Simple charged surfactants adsorbed at the liquid-liquid interface are seen to induce alignment of interfacial water molecules to a degree which is dependent on the induced surface potential. Saturation of water molecule alignment occurs at a surfactant surface concentration corresponding to a calculated surface potential of approximately 160 mV. In complementary studies, the relative degree of hydrocarbon chain ordering within monolayers of symmetric phosphatidylcholines of different chain lengths is inferred by the relative signal contributions of the methyl and methylene …

This review is the first comprehensive treatment of the biology of nonfrugivorous fruit flies of the family Tephritidae. Feeding habits of destructive and useful species, morphology of immature stages, and hypotheses regarding structural homology and the evolutionary biology of nonfrugivorous tephritids are reviewed, including zoogeography and theories involving resource heterogeneity, guild structure, resource partitioning, resource utilization, facultative niche exploitation, extrinsic and intrinsic factors, host associations, seasonal distribution and phenology, aggregative and circumnatal life history strategies, voltinism, diapause, aestivation, oviposition site, clutch size, and supernumerary oviposition.

Mathematics

Two discrete rings of nonlinear oscillators with topologically trapped kinks exhibit features due to coupling interactions between the rings. These interaction effects include phase locking between kinks in different rings, precession of the kink/antikink collision region, excitation of kink/antikink pairs, and time-dependent switching. We study these phenomena in simulations of two coupled discrete sine-Gordon equations, and in experiments on two inductively coupled rings of niobium Josephson junctions.

The Forest Service proposes to implement a management plan to control noxious weeds on the Bighorn National Forest. This management plan would be in accordance with general direction in the Land and Resource Management Plan (LRMP) to treat noxious farm weeds (Bighorn National Forest LRMP, III-45) to improve range conditions and manage undersirable plant species. The Colorado River of the American West supports a mainstream fish community that is classified as the “Big River” fishes. Four of these fishes are listed as endangered under provisions of the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended. Three fishes (i.e., Colorado pike minnow Ptychocheilus Lucius, humpback chub Gila cypha, and bonytail G. elegans) have been listed for over 10 years, and they have recovery plans that were prepared prior to designation of critical habitats.
