Politics And Plurality In A Lawyer's Choice Of Clients: The Case Of Stropnicky V. Nathanson, Steve Berenson Feb 1998

Politics And Plurality In A Lawyer's Choice Of Clients: The Case Of Stropnicky V. Nathanson, Steve Berenson

San Diego Law Review

In attempting to ensure equal access to public goods, the law of public accommodation treats private, commercial, and political associations under different standards. Using Stropnicky v. Nathanson, this article analyzes a claimant's interest of equal access to an attorney against an attorney's freedom of association. Attorney Nathanson was sanctioned for refusing to provide representation to Mr. Stropnicky. The policy of Nathanson's law practice, however, was to not represent male clients in divorce proceedings. The author argues that her policy should be considered as political, rather than commercial, activity and accorded greater deference than applied by the U.S. Supreme Court. The …

Investigation Of The Roles Of Toxin-Coregulated Pili And Mannose-Sensitive Hemagglutinin Pili In The Pathogenesis Of Vibrio Cholerae O139 Infection, Carol O. Tacket, Ronald K. Taylor, Genevieve Losonsky, Yu Lim Feb 1998

Investigation Of The Roles Of Toxin-Coregulated Pili And Mannose-Sensitive Hemagglutinin Pili In The Pathogenesis Of Vibrio Cholerae O139 Infection, Carol O. Tacket, Ronald K. Taylor, Genevieve Losonsky, Yu Lim

Dartmouth Scholarship

In this study, adult volunteers were fed tcpA and mshA deletion mutants of V. cholerae O139 strain CVD 112 to determine the role of toxin-coregulated pili (TCP) and mannose-sensitive hemagglutinin (MSHA) in intestinal colonization. Eight of 10 volunteers who received CVD 112 or CVD 112 ΔmshA shed the vaccine strains in their stools; the geometric mean peak excretion for both groups was 1.4 × 105 CFU/g of stool. In contrast, only one of nine recipients of CVD 112 ΔtcpA shed vibrios in his stool (P < 0.01); during the first 24 h after inoculation, 3 × 102 CFU/g was recovered from this volunteer. All recipients of CVD …

Environmental Variability Effects On Marine Fisheries: Four Case Histories, Eileen E. Hofmann, T. M. Powell Feb 1998

Environmental Variability Effects On Marine Fisheries: Four Case Histories, Eileen E. Hofmann, T. M. Powell

CCPO Publications

The changing nature of marine fisheries requires management approaches that recognize and include ecosystem and environmental effects. Therefore, we review some examples of exploited fishery stocks in which environmental control is a major contributor to structuring the abundance and distribution of the stock. Four examples, taken from studies of northern cod (Gadus morhua), cod and haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) larvae, the eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica), and Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba), are given that clearly illustrate environmental control on the fishery. From these examples, we argue that future management strategies for exploited fisheries must include effects of environmental variability. In particular, management …

My Brother By Jamaica Kincaid (Book Review), Daryl Cumber Dance

English Faculty Publications

In Jamaica Kincaid's six previous autobiographical novels and essays (At the Bottom of the River, 1984; Annie John, 1985; A Small Place, 1988; Annie, Gwen, Lily, Pam and Julie, 1989; Lucy, 1990; and The Autobiography of My Mother, 1996), her readers have the feeling that she has told all about her troubled life in Antigua and her painful emotional conflicts with her family (especially her mother). We discover with her new memoir, My Brother, however, that some things have been just too painful to tell - until now. Clearly the most obvious …

Grandmothering, Menopause, And The Evolution Of Human Life Histories, K. Hawkes, J.F. O'Connell, N.G. Blurton Jones, H. Alvarez, Eric Charnov

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

Long postmenopausal lifespans distinguish humans from all other primates. This pattern may have evolved with mother—child food sharing, a practice that allowed aging females to enhance their daughters fertility, thereby increasing selection against senescence. Combined with Charnov's dimensionless assembly rules for mammalian life histories, this hypothesis also accounts for our late maturity, small size at weaning, and high fertility. It has implications for past human habitat choice and social organization and for ideas about the importance of extended learning and paternal provisioning in human evolution.

World View: The 1998 Strategic Assessment From The Strategic Studies Institute, Earl H. Tilford Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

World View presents the annual strategic assessments of the analysts at the Strategic Studies Institute. It is fifth in a series that reflects both our individual forecasts and collective review of the key security issues facing the United States. The process that produces World View also leads to our annual Research and Outreach Plan. The strategic context is not vastly changed for 1998. It is as complex and uncertain as it has been virtually every year since the end of the Cold War. This year, however, we are also assessing the future in the light of the Quadrennial Defense Review, …

Searching For Stable Peace In The Persian Gulf, Kenneth Katzman Dr., Stephen C. Pelletiere Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Congressional Research Staffer Kenneth Katzman reviews the history of dual containment, and shows how adherence to the policy has eroded. He suggests it is time for Washington to change course in the Gulf, and lays out a course of action the United States should follow to maintain its leadership role in this vital region. Dr. Katzman's monograph deals thoughtfully with this controversial issue.

Force Planning Considerations For Army Xxi, William T. Johnsen Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The U.S. Army has moved along the path of preparing for the 21st century. This process began with the conceptual examinations and assessments carried out under the "Louisiana Maneuvers" and the Army's Battle Labs, and matured through the Force XXI process. The Army recently completed its first series of Advanced Warfighting Experiments that will shape the redesign and restructure of the future force, Army XXI, for the early years of the new millennium. While the broad outlines of Army XXI have been sketched out, many of the details remain to be filled in. Undoubtedly, these efforts will be influenced by …

Identification Of Mealybug- (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae) Resistant Turf-Type Buffalograss Germplasm, Jennifer Johnson-Cicalese, Frederick P. Baxendale, Terrance P. Riordan, Tiffany Heng-Moss Feb 1998

Identification Of Mealybug- (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae) Resistant Turf-Type Buffalograss Germplasm, Jennifer Johnson-Cicalese, Frederick P. Baxendale, Terrance P. Riordan, Tiffany Heng-Moss

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Two species of mealybugs, Tridiscus sporoboli (Cockerell) and Trionymus sp., have emerged as potentially serious pests of turf-type buffalograss, Buchloë dactyloides (Nuttall) Engelmann. Sixty-two buffalograss selections were screened for resistance to these mealybugs in 4 greenhouse trials. Using a 1-6 rating scale (1 = no signs of mealybugs, 6 = >75% of tillers infested), 'Prairie' and '609' showed high levels of resistance to mealybugs, whereas several experimental selections, including 90-157,84-512 and 84-412, exhibited moderate resistance. Most selections were moderately susceptible, and 85-97 was highly susceptible with almost every tiller infested and plants near death. In field tests, mealybug infestations were …

Papers in Microbiology

Two bacteriophage collections were examined with regard to their ability to form plaques on multiple bacterial host species. Nine of 10 phages studied were found to be broad-host-range bacteriophages. These phages fell into two groups. Group 1, the SN series, was isolated from sewage treatment plant samples with Sphaerotilus natans ATCC 13338 as a host. The DNAs of these bacteriophages contained modified bases and were insensitive to cleavage by type I and II restriction endonucleases. The efficiency of plating of these bacteriophages was changed only slightly on the alternate host. Group 2, the BHR series, was isolated by a two-host …

The Consequences Of Changing The Top Predator In A Food Web: A Comparative Experimental Approach, Mark A. Mcpeek Feb 1998

The Consequences Of Changing The Top Predator In A Food Web: A Comparative Experimental Approach, Mark A. Mcpeek

Dartmouth Scholarship

Changing the top predator in a food web often results in dramatic changes in species composition at lower trophic levels; many species are extirpated and replaced by new species in the presence of the new top predator. These shifts in species composition also often result in substantial alterations in the strengths of species interactions. However, some species appear to be little affected by these changes that cause species turnover at other positions in the food web. An example of such a difference in species responses is apparent in the distributions of coenagrionid damselflies (Odonata: Zygoptera) among permanent water bodies with …
