The Impact Of Obesity And Body Fat Distribution On Ambulatory Blood Pressure In Children And Adolescents, Empar Lurbe, Vicente Alvarez, Youlian Liao, Jose Tacons, Richard Cooper, Beatriz Cremades, Isabel Torro, Josep Redón

Faculty Publications

To assess the relationship between obesity, body fat distribution, and blood pressure in children and adolescents, various measures of obesity and the waist-to-hip circumference ratio were related to casual and ambulatory blood pressure as measured using a SpaceLabs 90207 monitor during a regular school day. Seventy obese and 70 nonobese children aged 6 to 16 years were included in the study. Regardless of the time period analyzed (24 h, daytime, or nighttime), ambulatory blood pressure and casual blood pressure were significantly higher among the obese children. The differences in systolic blood pressure observed between the groups were attributable to the …

Adaptive Strategies In The Indian Pharmaceutical Industry, Rishikesha T Krishnan, T R Madanmohan

Working Papers

How do firms react when an industry faces increased competitive pressures due to trade liberalisation? Firms are believed to bring about changes in their technology, marketing and organisation by reorganisation and redeployment of resources, often through exit process (Buffie and Spiller 1986, Ross 1988). Pavitt's (1990) analysis of technological opportunity and innovations, Ettlie and Bridges's (1982) analysis of environmental uncertainty and its impact on technological performance seem to support this. Many research results have observed that environment can affect firms' strategies (Jemison 1981, McArthur and Nystrom 1991), and under conditions of increased uncertainty firms employ innovative strategies (Paine and Anderson …

The Carg Boxes In The Promoter Of The Arabidopsis Floral Organ Identity Gene Apetala3 Mediate Diverse Regulatory Effects, Joline J. Tilly, David W. Allen, Thomas Jack

Dartmouth Scholarship

APETALA3 is a MADS box gene required for normal development of the petals and stamens in the Arabidopsis flower. Studies in yeast, mammals and plants demonstrate that MADS domain transcription factors bind with high affinity to a consensus sequence called the CArG box. The APETALA3 promoter contains three close matches to the consensus CArG box sequence. To gain insights into the APETALA3 regulatory circuitry, we have analyzed the APETALA3 promoter using AP3::uidA(GUS) fusions. 496 base pairs of APETALA3 promoter sequence 5′ to the transcriptional start directs GUS activity in the same temporal and spatial expression pattern as the APETALA3 RNA …

"Who Is't Can Read A Woman?": Shakespeare's Cymbeline And The Renaissance Woman, Nicole Williams '98

Honors Projects

At the end of Shakespeare's Cymbeline, the villainous Iachimo unravels the sordid details ofhis scheme to convince Posthumus that he has "enjoyed the dearest bodily part of [his] mistress," and Posthumus is struck with the horrible realization that he has commanded the murder ofhis innocent wife (1.4.40-1). Referring to his wife as a "temple / of virtue," Posthumus laments that he has destroyed Imogen's physical body, a holy space that contained a pure and righteous spirit. To his great relief, he discovers moments later that his wife is still alive and that the beauty ofboth her body and her spirit …

Familial Influences And Higher Education, Anjali Shaw

The Park Place Economist

College is a place of many things: a place to learn, a place to make new friendships, a place to discover what interests you, and so much more. Some have always dreamed of attending a college or university, while for others, higher learning is not their desired goal. What distinguishes these two types of people from each other is influenced by many factors. Some of these include place of residence, family income, family structure, education level of the parents, race, and gender. It is not incorrect to say that the family is one of the greatest influences on a child’s …
