Molecular Modelling Studies Of Acetylcholinesterase, Charilaos E. Linaras

Dissertations

The controversial role of electrostatic interactions in the process of steering of acetylcholine into the active site of acetylcholinesterases was investigated in this study. A novel methodology was implemented to simulate the process of recognition of acetylcholine by Torpedo Californica and both wild type and charge neutralized mutated Human AChE. The obtained results suggest the important role of coulombic interactions in the steering process. The steering process of selected irreversible AChE inhibitors was also simulated supporting the role of electrostatic interactions in the recognition process.

Experimental Manipulation Of The Cost Of Thermal Acclimation In Drosophila Melanogaster, Robert A. Krebs, Martin E. Feder

Acclimation to environmental change can impose costs on organisms. One potential cost is the energy and nutrients consumed by a physiological response, e.g. the resources required for expression of heat-shock proteins (Hsps). We examined the significance of this cost by genetic manipulation. We isolated four isofemale lines from a Drosophila melanogaster population previously transformed with a hsp70-kcZ fusion. Lines were similar in Hsp70 expression but differed in P-galactosidase expression upon heat shock, and replicates of each line were reared on a high quantity and low quantity medium. The Age Of The Kirkdale Cave Palaeofauna, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Derek C. Ford

The Kirkdale Cave palaeofauna represents the original and classic 'warm', interglacial mammalian cave deposit in Britain. Although long considered to be 'Ipswichian' in age, no previous attempts to obtain radiometric dates have been recorded. Here we report a uranium-series disequilibrium date of 121,000 ± 4000 yr BP on a flowstone capping that overlay the original bone bed. The precision of the date exceeds that obtained at any other British Interglacial cave site, and permits tentative correlation with the high precision ice core records now available.

Within psychology there has been a historic lack of literature on male development at the social, personal and intrapsychic levels. This is currently being remediated somewhat, but large voids still exist. Not only is male development under-represented, but there is even less research on the development and attributes of men's same-sex friendships. This study describes typical strengths and deficits in male friendships. The areas of deficit include the lack of emotional closeness many men experience with each other and the decline in friends that many men experience post-adolescence. Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

This article examines the roles of religion and spirituality in the etiology and treatment of eating disorders. After briefly reviewing the relevant research, we discuss the most common and significant religious and spiritual issues wer have observed with LDS eating disorder patients including negative images or perceptions of God, feelings of spiritual unworthiness and shame, and fear of abandonment by God. We briefly describe process considerations for using spiritual interventions and concluded by describing seven spiritual interventions we have found especially useful in treating LDS eating disorder patients, including spiritual teachings, spiritual bibliotherapy, and prayer.

Size of leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L) roots and their location in the soil profile are important factors relating to survival offirst-instar black dot flea beetle (Aphthona nigriscutis Foudras) larvae. First-instar larvae must find leafy spurge roots between 1 to 4 mm diam in the first 2 days after hatching from eggs for survival. In field studies, we ddermined that most flea beetle larvae reside within 7.6 em ofthe soil surface. Their location in the upper areas ofthe soil profile allows accessibility to desirable size roots, however the larvae are more susceptible to freezing temperatures in this region. Overall, there …

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Clients may request therapy for symptoms that resemble those for sexual abuse survivors, although they have sketchy or no memories for abuse. "Recovered memory" therapy has been the subject of considerable controversy and legal debate. There are still many other options for treating the clients distress without using "memory recovery" techniques. Goals, skills, and techniques for working with these clients are presented here.

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Recent focus on memories of abuse that are recalled during therapy has alerted mental health care providers to potential hazards to the client, the therapist, and innocent others. Being aware of current research on how memory works can help reduce these risks. Integrating information from both sides of the debate provides a more accurate understanding of delayed memory recall.
