Our lab has been investigating the development of neuronal phenotype and circuitry in Hirudo medicinalis. Early in embryogenesis the heart excitor (HE) motor neuron selectively extends multiple arbors into the body wall prior to heart tube (HT) formation. HE contact with HT primordium at later stages of development results in remodeling such that arbors are elaborated on the HT, while those in the body wall are retracted. HT-derived cues are necessary for HE remodeling (Jellies, 1995. Am. Zool. 35:529; Jellies and Kopp, 1995. Invert. Neurosci. 1:145). HT and body wall explants were co-cultured to investigate the possible influences of …

This Article explores the dynamics and complexity of the electromagnetic field controversy. Presently, there are many unanswered questions with respect to the effects electromagnetic radiation has on people who live or work near power lines. This Article examines the state of domestic and international scientific evidence that exists regarding the risks of electromagnetic radiation. Ultimately, the Article concludes that although the present state of the legal and scientific field is not conducive to electromagnetic field litigation and plaintiffs will face difficulty in receiving settlement awards, the judicial route is not closed off to them.

This Case Note examines the doctrine of standing in light of the Fifth Circuit's decision in Friends of the Earth v. Crown Central Petroleum. The Crown Central decision addressed whether the environmental organization, Friends of the Earth (FOE), met the requirements of standing necessary to bring a lawsuit under the Clean Water Act. The Fifth Circuit in Crown Central seems to have created a new requirement for establishing the "fairly traceable" prong of the standing analysis. On a summary judgment motion, the Fifth Circuit denied standing to FOE because it did not present scientific evidence to establish an "injury-in-fact." This …

Attempting To Legislate Attempted Environmental Crimes, Helen M. Maher

The Environmental Crimes and Enforcement Act of 1996 (ECEA) bill was recently proposed for consideration by Congress. The ECEA, if adopted, will have a pervasive effect on the entire spectrum of environmental statutes, reflecting a legislative effort to create more uniform enforcement and penalty provisions. Most importantly, the bill creates liability for any person who attempts to violate an environmental statute. This Comment analyzes the ECEA and focuses specifically on the attempt provision and its impact on the Clean Water Act. The underlying rationales and social purposes of common law approaches to environmental regulation will be compared with the proposed …

The full-length cDNA sequence encoding Brugia malayi L3 paramyosin has been isolated by immunoscreening a cDNA library with a mouse antiserum raised against Wuchereria bancrofti L3 infective larvae. A recombinant truncated form of paramyosin was expressed as a glutathione S-transferase fusion protein and used to evaluate humoral responses of adults from a W. bancrofti-endemic area in French Polynesia according to their parasitological status. Immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4) preferentially bound to paramyosin in W. bancrofti-parasitized individuals, in contrast to unparasitized individuals, who harbored neither microfilaria nor Og4C3 adult worm circulating antigen. Insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) are potent mitogens for a variety of cancer cells in vitro. In breast, prostate and neuroblastoma cancer cells, it has been suggested that IGF-II plays a paracrine/autocrine role. However, information on cell-type -specific IGF-II expression in vivo is limited. In situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry were carried out to determine the cell type expressing IGF-II in different tumor tissues. Both IGF-II mRNA and protein were localized to malignant cells, and expression in the stroma was minimal in all the tumors. The data are consistent with the hypothesis that cancer cell growth is regulated by IGF-II, and therefore …

In this study we have analyzed the activity of the silkworm A3 cytoplasmic actin promoter in homologous insect and heterologous mammalian expression systems. To study the expression of the A3 actin promoter in insect cells we have isolated and characterized a stably transformed Bombyx mori cell line containing a novel selectable marker gene, puromycin N-acetyl transferase under control of transcriptional regulatory signals from the A3 cytoplasmic actin gene. Integration of the transfected plasmids into the host genome was demonstrated by Southern and in situhybridizations. Obesity is a critical public health problem because of its prevalence, medical and psychosocial effects, and resistance to intervention. Weight loss in overweight individuals has been encouraged by the United States Public Health Service and by the medical community as a means for improving health. However, recent studies have suggested either positive or negative effects of weight loss on survival. It is possible that physical fitness may have a confounding effect, or be an effect modifier on survival in weight loss studies.
