Content Validity And Inter-Rater Reliability Of A Hopi Child Abuse Risk Assessment Instrument., Ron Andrew Reid

Child abuse within the Hopi tribe is a major social problem that affects the mental health and well being of this Native American Indian community. Since 1985, many states have used risk assessment instruments to estimate the potential risk of child abuse. The present study evaluated a risk assessment instrument developed through combining items gathered from these different instruments for use with the Hopi.In this study, three raters used an instrument developed by the primary investigator (Reid, 1995) for review of records at the Hopi tribe's social service program. Transcriptional Regulation Of A Novel Heat Shock Response And Its Association With Apoptosis In Nb2-Lymphoma Cells., Mingyu Zhang

Virtually all cells respond to heat stress by increased expression or induction of the highly conserved heat shock proteins (HSPs). However rat Nb2-11 cells, a prolactin-dependent preT-cell line displayed an unusual heat shock response following exposure to heat stress (41$\sp\circ$C, 1 hr). There was no evidence of inducible HSP70 expression. Moreover, expression of the constitutive HSP70s and HSP90s decreased during the heat stress apparently reflecting a decrease in mRNA stability. Gel shift assays revealed that heat shock factor (HSF) was activated although its DNA binding rapidly deteriorated. Interleukin (IL)-1 is a proinflammatory cytokine with pleiotropic effects in inflammation. IL-1 binding to its receptor triggers a cascade of signaling events, including activation of the stress-activated mitogen- activated protein (MAP) kinases, c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) and p38 MAP kinase, as well as transcription factor nuclear factor κB (NF-κB). IL-1 signaling results in cellular responses through induction of inflammatory gene products such as IL-6. One of the earliest events in IL-1 signaling is the rapid interaction of IL-1 receptor-associated kinases, IRAK and IRAK-2, with the receptor complex. Solute-Solvent Pair Distribution Functions In Highly Asymmetric Additive Hard Sphere Mixtures, Douglas Henderson, Kwong-Yu Chan

Contact values for the solute-solvent pair distribution function in an additive hard sphere mixture, as computed from the Henderson-Chan (HC) formulas, are compared with the recent Monte Carlo (MC) data and formula of Matyushov and Ladanyi (ML) [J. Chem. Phys. 107, 5815 (1997)]. The agreement is found to be excellent. The negative finding of ML is due to a misprint in one of the HC publications. We find the HC formula to be superior to the ML formula when compared to our MC data [Mol. Phys. 91, 1137 (1997)] for the case where the ratio of diameters is large and …

The oncogenic BCR/ABL protein protects hematopoietic cells from apoptosis induced by growth factor deprivation, but the mechanisms are only partially understood. A BCR/ABL mutant lacking amino acids 176-426 in the BCR domain (p185DeltaBCR) failed to protect interleukin 3-deprived 32Dcl3 myeloid precursor cells from apoptosis, although it possessed tyrosine kinase activity and was capable of activating the Ras-Raf-MAP kinase pathway. Compared to p185 wild-type transfectants, p185DeltaBCR-transfected cells showed markedly reduced levels of Bcl-2 and expressed the hypophosphorylated, proapoptotic form of BAD. Bcl-2 expression in the mitochondrial fraction of p185DeltaBCR cells was also markedly diminished and mitochondrial RAF was undetectable. In p185DeltaBCR …

Mean net surface heating of the Pacific Ocean shows areas of high heat gain in the eastern tropics and heat loss in the western midlatitudes. For steady state conditions, westward and poleward transport of heat is implied. Mean geostrophic and Ekman fluxes of heat and freshwater through the sides of a western tropical Pacific box bounded by World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) high‐resolution expendable bathythermograph (XBT) transects are presented. Water mass properties of currents transporting heat and freshwater through the enclosed region are seen to be modified in transit. A paper highlighting several books that explain theories of “cyberfeminism” by looking at works created by Sadie Plant, Sandy Stone and VNS Matrix. The author highlights written materials like Zeros and Ones (Sadie Plant, 1997) and The War of Desire and Technology (Sandy Stone, 1995) created by cyberfeminists to accredit the innovations of women in technological spaces. Though cyberfeminism has no concrete territory, an argument analyzed by the author entertains the idea that “technology is inherently feminine”, despite the male dominated industry of technology.
