Speech Parameters Affects On Social Acceptability Ratings Of Adolescents With Repaired Cleft Lip And/Or Palate, Sarah Telkins Hoff

The current study explored speech social acceptability ratings of adolescents with and without orofacial clefts. The study utilized speech samples previously collected on 80 adolescents, 40 cleft and 40 noncleft, dubbed on to a stimulus tape in a random order. From an earlier study the following were available: (a) adolescent (cleft and noncleft) self-ratings of speech social acceptability, (b) objective ratings of the adolescents' speech social acceptability provided by a listener panel with no background in speech-language pathology. New data were collected by recruiting a new listener panel of 10 graduate students with training in speech-language pathology, utilizing a 7-point …

Cationic liposome-mediated intracellular delivery of a fluorescein-labeled chimeric DNA-RNA ribozyme targeted to the HIV-1 5' LTR was investigated, using THP-1, THP-1/HIV-1(IIIB) or HeLa/LAV cells. Different fluorescence patterns were observed when the cells were exposed to Lipofectamine, Lipofectin or DMRIE:DOPE (1:1) complexed to the ribozyme. With Lipofectamine intense cell-associated fluorescence was found. Incubation with Lipofectin resulted in less intense diffuse fluorescence, while with DMRIE an intense but sporadic fluorescence was observed. Differentiated THP-1/HIV-1(IIIB) cells were more susceptible to killing by liposome-ribozyme complexes than THP-1 cells. A Negative Regulator Mediates Quorum-Sensing Control Of Exopolysaccharide Production In Pantoea Stewartii Subsp. Stewartii., S B Von Bodman, D R Majerczak, D L Coplin

Classical quorum-sensing (autoinduction) regulation, as exemplified by the lux system of Vibrio fischeri, requires N-acyl homoserine lactone (AHL) signals to stimulate cognate transcriptional activators for the cell density-dependent expression of specific target gene systems. For Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii, a bacterial pathogen of sweet corn and maize, the extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) stewartan is a major virulence factor, and its production is controlled by quorum sensing in a population density-dependent manner. Two genes, esaI and esaR, encode essential regulatory proteins for quorum sensing. EsaI is the AHL signal synthase, and EsaR is the cognate gene regulator. esaI, DeltaesaR, and DeltaesaI-esaR mutations …

Measurement of hemoglobin concentration is among the most common clinical procedures. It is necessary in screening for anemia and is a means of providing a general assessment of physical well-being. Current methods for measuring hemoglobin concentration are invasive, requiring blood access. This paper describes a novel technique for measuring hemoglobin concentration noninvasively. The method takes advantage of the unique optical properties of hemoglobin to make the measurement. A vascularized tissue bed is transilluminated with a narrow linewidth optical source at an isobestic wavelength of oxy- and deoxy-hemoglobin. The transmitted light intensity is measured as the tissue is compressed, which causes …

Plant Growth Conditions In Spaceflight And Pathogenicity Of Microbes, Binh Huynh, Anne J. Anderson

In spaceflight conditions, plants are subjected to a variety of environmental stresses which may promote microbial growth and potential pathogenicity. Among the changes that may occur in the plant is a decrease in freely available carbohydrates, resulting in the microbe having to look for alternative carbon sources. A seed-borne fungal endophyte, an Acremonium species, was identified as the symptom-causing agent in Super Dwarf seedlings grown in a spaceflight mission in 1995. Plants bearing the endophyte grew without symptoms in the greenhouse in open conditions. The isolated Acremonium grew well on different carbohydrates available in wheat leaf apoplastic fluids as well …

Starch amylose is synthesized through the activity of the granule-bound starch synthase (GBSS). In wheat (Triticum aestivum L. ), there are three structural genes encoding iso- forms of GBSS. Naturally occurring mutations (null alleles) resulting in the loss of one or more GBSS isoforms have recently been identified. The presence of one or two GBSS null alleles results in the production of starch with reduced amylose content. Reduced amylose wheats have been termed `partial waxy'. Wheats with three GBSS null alleles produce essentially amylose-free, or waxy, starch. Partial waxy wheats are sources of flours with optimal quality characteristics in …
