Increased survival and advances in oncology research demand that health professionals attend to the gap in knowledge regarding health-related quality of life (HRQL) variables associated with the unique sequelae of cancer in the long-term (LT) cancer survivor. Research in this area may direct the development of effective interventions to increase the HRQL of LT cancer survivors. The study's purpose was to describe the relationships between self-esteem, learned resourcefulness, and social support to HRQL as well as their predictive value to HRQL for LT cancer survivors. Research has supported that by accommodating teaching methods to complement student learning styles, academic achievement and attitudes improve. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of multi-learning style based instruction, specifically perceptual preferences, on the reading achievement of fourth grade students. Forty-seven students in two intact classrooms from one elementary school participated in the pretest/posttest control group design. A pretest was given to both groups to ensure initial group equivalence. An experimental group then received multi-perceptual instruction for a period of two weeks while a control group was taught by traditional instruction. Following the instruction period, a …

The author sets forth the facts underlying the Baby Richard case from the time he was conceived until the time of his adoption and analyzes the case law which ensued as a result of the situation. The author then addresses the amendment to the adoption act which resulted from the Baby Richard case. The article next explores the Does' possible courses of action and evaluates the chances of them regaining custody. Finally, the article suggests the possibility of a solution for the future of adopted children.

There is an old story about an ancient Greek philosopher named Thales. According to this tale, Thales was looking to the stars as he walked about Athens, attempting to answer certain troubling philosophical questions. He became so engaged in thought that he didn't even notice the well he was approaching. Needless to say, Thales. one of the most brilliant of ancient Greek philosophers. fell into the well and became the butt of many Athenian jokes. His head was so lost in the clouds, some said, that he didn't even notice the world around him.

In Western Australia, granite outcrops rise from the surrounding countryside like an extensive island chain, stretching from the high rainfall south-west to the arid interior. They are extremely rich in biodiversity, which can change dramatically from outcrop to outcrop. They may contain relics of unique plant and animal populations and are very significant for nature conservation.

Granite outcrops can also be a major source of groundwater recharge within catchments, especially where the surrounding fringe and woodland vegetation has been cleared.

As a part of a National Pork Producers Council educational program, our research and extension team at the University of Kentucky was linked with an independent commercial swine producer to test the NCPIG model against observed commercial on-farm data. This experience provided improved information for model development as well as increased producer insight into the data input needs and potential benefits of modeling. Detailed production information comparisons between the NCPIG model and producer data are presented for summer time conditions to assess the validity of the NCPIG model for simulation of grow-finish swine performance. Rad52 Associates With Rpa And Functions With Rad55 And Rad57 To Assemble Meiotic Recombination Complexes, Stephen L. Gasior

We show that the Saccharomyces cerevisiae recombination protein Rad52 and the single-strand DNA-binding protein RPA assemble into cytologically detectable subnuclear complexes (foci) during meiotic recombination. Immunostaining shows extensive colocalization of Rad52 and RPA and more limited colocalization of Rad52 with the strand exchange protein Rad51. Rad52 and RPA foci are distinct from those formed by Rad51, and its meiosis-specific relative Dmc1, in that they are also detected in meiosis during replication. In addition, RPA foci are observed during mitotic S phase. Double-strand breaks (DSBs) promote formation of RPA, Rad52, and Rad51 foci. Mutants that lack Spo11, a protein required for …

The expected consequences of a score on an ability test can constrain individual performance. The authors predict that status processes, including status differences and the differences in rewards and costs that result, will produce differences in ability test scores between high-status and low-status individuals. In three controlled experi- ments, participants randomly assigned low status scored lower on a standard test of mental ability (the Raven Progressive Matrices) than did participants assigned high status. For both men and women, the difference in ability test score between low-status and high-status participants was about half a standard deviation. The results suggest the need …
