The Effects Of So2 On The Formation Of Cl2 During Co-Firing Muncipal Solid Waste With Coal, Ying Xie

The Deacon Reaction was proposed as a mechanism for the formation of molecular chlorine during the combustion of municipal solid waste (MSW): 4HCl + O2 ↔ 2Cl2 + 2H2O As suggested by some researchers, co-firing high sulfur coal with MSW may reduce the emission of toxic chlorinated organics, resulting from the reaction between S02 and Cl2: SO2 + Cl2 + H2O → SO3 + 2HCl The effect of sulfur dioxide on the formation of chlorine through the Deacon Reaction is investigated in this study. A 335 year stable isotope record from a New Caledonia coral (22°S, 166°E) helps fill a large gap in historical climate reconstructions. Although the long‐term coral δ18O‐based sea surface temperature (SST) trend is one of warming, there are notable decadal fluctuations, especially in the early 18th and early 19th centuries. Mean annual SSTs between 1658 and 1900 are estimated to be ∼0.3°C lower than the 20th century average, with interdecadal excursions of 0.5°–0.8°C. European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) were brought to the United States from Europe. They were released in New York City in 1890 and 1891 and, since that time, have spread across the country. They were observed in the midwest by 1930, in Colorado in 1939, and in California in 1942. The starling population in the United States has since grown to an estimated 140 million birds. Starlings are frequently considered pests because of the damage they cause, especially to agriculture and in urban roosts. This publication provides facts about starlings and methods to control their damage in agriculture.

A Partial Host Range Of The High Plains Virus Of Corn And Wheat, Dallas L. Seifers, Tom L. Harvey, T. J. Martin, Stanley G. Jensen

Barley (Hordeum vulgare), cheat (Bromus secalinus), corn (Zea mays), oat (Avena sativa), rye (Secale cereale), and wheat (Triticum aestivum) were infected by a Kansas isolate of the High Plains virus (HPV) in greenhouse experiments, but several other grass species were not. Infection of a host was dependent upon wheat curl mite numbers. Although both green foxtail (Setaria viridis) and yellow foxtail (S. glauca) are found naturally infected by HPV, only yellow foxtail could be infected in greenhouse experiments.
