The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Increasingly, public administrators and managers in the fields of human service and environmental planning have been exploring new avenues to resolve complex and seemingly intractable public problems. Confronting such controversial issues as land management plans, common-pool resources, endangered species, welfare reform, health care and immigration are requiring new and more innovative ways of doing business-ways in which problem-solving and leadership is a shared pursuit of governmental agencies and concerned citizens.

Since collaborative efforts in these arenas have recently reemerged as one avenue to resolve complex policy disputes, it is premature to give an accurate assessment of their long term viability. …

On Whose Watch? The Silent Separation Of American Children From Their Fathers, Nancy S. Coney, Wade C. Mackey

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Within two generations, the primary reason that American children were deprived of a father shifted from a father's death to a woman's choice. That is, prior to the 1960s, the major cause of fatherlessness was the death of the father through illness or accident. After the 1960s, the children became deprived of fathers primarily because of women's decisions to petition for a divorce or to become a single parent mother. The path of the shift is examined, and the consequences writ small per child and writ large for the commonweal are examined.

Discrete-Time Continuous-Dilation Construction Of Linear Scale-Invariant Systems And Multi-Dimensional Self-Similar Signals, Wei Zhao

This dissertation presents novel models for purely discrete-time self-similar processes and scale- invariant systems. The results developed are based on the definition of a discrete-time scaling (dilation) operation through a mapping between discrete and continuous frequencies. It is shown that it is possible to have continuous scaling factors through this operation even though the signal itself is discrete-time. Both deterministic and stochastic discrete-time self-similar signals are studied. Conditions of existence for self-similar signals are provided. Construction of discrete-time linear scale-invariant (LSI) systems and white noise driven models of self-similar stochastic processes are discussed. Elongated fibrinogen molecules are comprised of two outer “D” domains, each connected through a “coiled-coil” region to the central “E” domain. Fibrin forms following thrombin cleavage in the E domain and then undergoes intermolecular end-to-middle D:E domain associations that result in double-stranded fibrils. Factor XIIIa mediates crosslinking of the C-terminal regions of γ chains in each D domain (the γXL site) by incorporating intermolecular ɛ-(γ-glutamyl)lysine bonds between amine donor γ406 lysine of one γ chain and a glutamine acceptor at γ398 or γ399 of another. Several lines of evidence show that crosslinked γ chains extend “transversely” between the strands of …

This study compares academic performance, behavior, and commitment of basketball and volleyball athletes and non-athletes in a rural Canadian high school. It compares mid-term and final grades in each school discipline; visits to an administrator for disciplinary visits; and demerit points for improper behavior; and estimates the mean weekly time commitment for athletes in each sport.

Deteriorated water resources in Central and Eastern Europe call for actions that should be undertaken to improve current conditions and to protect human and environmental health. Mathematical modeling and computer simulation is often an integral part of the decision-making process. Models and simulations allow rapid and varied evaluation of causes and effects and the principal advantage is that they enable an analysis of even long-term actions with limited investment costs. In vivo experiments have demonstrated (a) that transient electrical potentials are induced in impact-loaded bone, and (b) that bone formation is increased in response to electrical stimulation. Therefore, it has been hypothesized that, in response to mechanical loading, mechanical energy in bone is transduced into biologically relevant electrical energy. Direct square-wave and cyclic voltammetric electrochemical examination of the yeast iso-1-cytochrome c Phe82His/Cys102Ser variant revealed the intricacies of redox driven changes in axial coordination, concomitant with intramolecular rearrangement. Electrochemical methods are ideally suited for such a redox study, since they provide a direct and quantitative visualization of specific dynamic events. For the iso-1-cytochrome c Phe82His/Cys102Ser variant, square-wave voltammetry showed that the primary species in the reduced state is the Met₈₀-Fe²⁺-His₁₈ coordination form, while in the oxidized state the His₈₂-Fe³⁺-His₁₈ form predominates. No library or information service can stand aloof from the current developments (legal, technological, and organizational) in scholarly publishing. I will be describing my personal actions to influence beneficial change, as well as those of the various groups I am involved with. This may be useful to chapter members and, I hope, stimulate more ideas for effecting changes in the electronic publishing environment before it, too, is usurped by for-profit publishers.

Neural network technique has been found to be a powerful tool in pattern recognition. It captures associations or discovers regularities with a set of patterns, where the types, number of variables or diversity of the data are very great, the relationships between variables are vaguely understood, or the relationships are difficult to describe adequately with conventional approaches.
