Coping With "Loss": A Re-Examination Of Sentencing Federal Economic Crimes Under The Guidelines, Frank O. Bowman Iii Apr 1998

Coping With "Loss": A Re-Examination Of Sentencing Federal Economic Crimes Under The Guidelines, Frank O. Bowman Iii

Faculty Publications

This Article has three objectives. First, it attempts to rethink the sentencing of federal economic criminals in light of the basic purposes of sentencing and of the Guidelines' particular structure and objectives. Second, it examines the deficiencies in the current sentencing guidelines regarding theft, fraud, and other economic crimes, and the problem areas in the case law construing those guidelines. Third, it proposes and analyzes a consolidated guideline, together with accompanying application notes, for sentencing virtually all theft and fraud cases (a draft of which follows the text of this Article as Appendix A).

Community Leaders’ Perceptions Of Violence Against Women As A Public Health Issue, Deborah J. Bartz Apr 1998

Community Leaders’ Perceptions Of Violence Against Women As A Public Health Issue, Deborah J. Bartz

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis was to identify correlates of support for the involvement of local public health departments in the prevention of violence against women. The research is a secondary analysis of data from community leaders in the 50 public health catchment areas throughout Michigan.

A total of 525 community leaders were identified by health officers and were mailed surveys that dealt with a wide range of health policy issues. Three hundred and fifty-one surveys were returned.

The analysis were designed to determine which factors would affect support for treating violence against women as a public health issue. A …

The Selection Process And Characteristics Of Judges Appointed To The Us Courts Of Appeal: From Carter To Clinton, Mary K. Burk

Student Work

Judges who are appointment to serve on the US Courts of Appeal have the power to change government policy and influence our daily lives. Each President has the opportunity to make an impact on the United States with the types of judges that he chooses to appoint. This study examines the process of nominating and selecting judges, as well as the characteristics of those who have been appointment to serve on the bench. Using data from previous studies conducted by Sheldon Goldman, as well as data gathered from Senate Judiciary Clinton, during his first term in office, to those judges …

No Dichotomies: Reflections On Equality Forafrican Canadians In R. V. R.D.S., April Burey Apr 1998

No Dichotomies: Reflections On Equality Forafrican Canadians In R. V. R.D.S., April Burey

Dalhousie Law Journal

The contrasts, in form and substance, were stark. In form, I was a black woman in a wheelchair, pleading before an all-white, able-bodied and almost all-male Supreme Court of Canada. The usually empty public galleries in the Ottawa courtroom were filled with people of colour, who had come from across the country to witness the hearing of this landmark case. On their entrance, the nine white judges, dressed in their staid, black robes made an almost audible gasp as they were met with this colourfully clad, intently silent band of people of colour.

Prostitution In U.S. Society: Moving Beyond Traditional Feminist Frameworks Of Analysis, Megan M. Coats Apr 1998

Prostitution In U.S. Society: Moving Beyond Traditional Feminist Frameworks Of Analysis, Megan M. Coats

Masters Theses

In this thesis, I explore the different ways that prostitute women's voices have been silenced by groups which have historically controlled the social and academic discourse on prostitution. Utilizing the research method of standpoint epistemology, I first discuss why the prostitute activist's voices must be considered as the central source for scientists theorizing on prostitution. Next, I give an account of some historical influences which have shaped the discourse on prostitution, affecting the development of legislation regulating prostitution. Then, I provide a history of the development of the liberal and radical feminist discourse on prostitution. I also include some contemporary …
