A Population-Based Approach To Monitoring Inpatient Utilization And Determining The Influence Of Sociodemographic Factors On Three Theoretical Categories Of Diagnosis -Related Groups In A Two-County Area Of Alabama, William Floyd Deshazo Iv

All ETDs from UAB

Variations in hospital utilization rates among populations have been documented by health services researchers. Diagnosis related groups (DRGs) have been aggregated to reflect these differences. Low variation (LV) DRGs are based upon physician consensus on the need for hospitalization. Ambulatory care sensitive (ACS) DRGs deal with procedures that have shifted from inpatient to outpatient. In avoidable hospital conditions (AHC), inpatient hospitalizations are avoided through an effective outpatient treatment approach. Using the two-county age-specific utilization rates as the standard, expected discharges and indirect age-adjusted rates were calculated for all zip codes. The average rate for all three DRGs was 28.8 discharges …

Lutheranism, Anti-Judaism, And Bach's St. John Passion: With An Annotated Literal Translation Of The Libretto, J. S. Bach, Michael Marissen Jan 1998

Lutheranism, Anti-Judaism, And Bach's St. John Passion: With An Annotated Literal Translation Of The Libretto, J. S. Bach, Michael Marissen

Music Faculty Works

Bach's St. John Passion is surely one of the monuments of Western music, yet performances have become inevitably controversial. In large part, this is the result of the combination of powerful, highly emotional music coupled with a text that includes passages from a gospel marked by vehement anti-Judaic sentiments. What did this masterpiece mean in Bach's day, and what does it mean today? Although the bibliographies on Bach and on Judaism have grown enormously since World War II, there has been very little work on the relationships between these two areas. This is hardly surprising writers focusing on issues of …

A Case For Procedural Justice Climate: Development And Test Of A Multilevel Model., Stefanie Elizabeth Naumann Jan 1998

A Case For Procedural Justice Climate: Development And Test Of A Multilevel Model., Stefanie Elizabeth Naumann

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Current conceptualizations of procedural justice focus largely on individual perceptions; no framework exists for examining procedural justice's social context. This dissertation presents a model that identifies contextual factors contributing to procedural justice climate and, in turn, a variety of work-related attitudes and behaviors associated with procedural justice climate. In general, empirical tests on data collected from 220 employees of two banks offered support for the model. Employee perceptions of leader member exchange, organizational support, and supervisor monitoring were positively associated with individual procedural justice perceptions. Work group perceptions of cohesion and supervisor visibility in demonstrating procedural justice were associated with …

Considering Outcomes Beyond Achievement: Student Participation As An Indicator Of High School Performance., Susan Elizabeth Kochan-Teddlie Jan 1998

Considering Outcomes Beyond Achievement: Student Participation As An Indicator Of High School Performance., Susan Elizabeth Kochan-Teddlie

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is the product of a three-phase exploratory study that utilized both quantitative and qualitative methods in order to develop and test a composite indicator of high school performance that measures the degree to which high schools strike a balance between the press for academic excellence and the need to sustain all students--even the most marginal--on to high school completion. In Phase I, undaunted and relative performance indicators (UPIs and RPIs) of student achievement and participation were calculated for a statewide sample of 308 schools whose grade configurations included grades 9-12. The achievement scores were composites of student performance …

Education For Liberation As (An) African-American Folk Theory., Denise Marie Taliaferro Jan 1998

Education For Liberation As (An) African-American Folk Theory., Denise Marie Taliaferro

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

African American people have historically expressed great faith in education as a path toward liberation. It is an idea--education for liberation--that is pervasive in African American discourse. It is well documented in research that focuses on the efforts of African Americans to educate themselves despite slavery, the fall of reconstruction, a brutal Jim Crow system, and desegregation in lieu of integration (Anderson, 1988; Lerner, 1972; Watkins, 1993). Yet despite our faithful proclamations, we have been represented otherwise in mainstream educational discourse. Intellectual inferiority, cultural deprivation, underachievement, and at-risk have been some of the terms used to explain the consistent and …

Couriers Without Luggage: Negotiable Instruments And Digital Signatures, Jane Kaufman Winn Jan 1998

Couriers Without Luggage: Negotiable Instruments And Digital Signatures, Jane Kaufman Winn

Articles

Prior to the very recent explosion of interest in the Internet, for decades electronic commerce had been conducted on a large scale over closed networks. Since the late 1960s, billions of dollars in funds transfers have been executed over networked computer systems such as the Federal Reserve Wire Network (Fedwire), Clearing House Interbank Payment System (CHIPS), and the automated clearing house system (ACH); billions of dollars of goods have been sold over electronic data interchange networks. These closed, proprietary networks were built during the era of mainframe computer systems and are now being challenged by open networks of distributed client-server …

"Mental Pictures And Emotional Intimacy: A Theoretical Explanation For The Sexual Sadistic Serial Murder's Heterosexual Lifestyle", John E. Holman Jan 1998

"Mental Pictures And Emotional Intimacy: A Theoretical Explanation For The Sexual Sadistic Serial Murder's Heterosexual Lifestyle", John E. Holman

Clinical Sociology Review

This paper develops a theoretical explanation for the sexual sadistic serial murderer's heterosexual lifestyle. The theoretical formulation developed draws upon Glasser's (1984) control theory and Marshal's (1989) general theory of sexual offending. It synthesizes Glasser's propositions around idealized life style and mental pictures and Marshal's propositions on intimacy. The theoretical formulation developed focuses on the mental and behavioral contradictions implicit in the life of this type of offender. The paper concludes by comparing these lifestyles to those of homosexuals in similar heterosexual lifestyles.

Perspectives On Video Self-Confrontation, Linda P. Rouse Jan 1998

Perspectives On Video Self-Confrontation, Linda P. Rouse

Clinical Sociology Review

Video self-confrontation has been widely used for training and therapeutic interventions. Clients are videotaped then given an opportunity to view themselves via playback Early reviews of video self-confrontation studies noted the absence of an explicit, well developed theoretical rationale for application and evaluation of video playback techniques. This article discusses five theoretical perspectives on video self-confrontation, information processing; causal attribution, psychodynamic; objective self-awareness/self-discrepancies; and Mead's notion of self. Each calls attention to unique elements of video self-confrontation, with implications for clinical practice. Additionally, new questions raised by symbolic interactionism about the social nature of the experience of self-confrontation by video …

Creating A Canonical Scientific And Technical Information Classification System For Ncstrl+, Melissa E. Tiffany, Michael L. Nelson Jan 1998

Creating A Canonical Scientific And Technical Information Classification System For Ncstrl+, Melissa E. Tiffany, Michael L. Nelson

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to describe the new subject classification system for the NCSTRL+ project. NCSTRL+ is a canonical digital library (DL) based on the Networked Computer Science Technical Report Library (NCSTRL). The current NCSTRL+ classification system uses the NASA Scientific and Technical (STI) subject classifications, which has a bias towards the aerospace, aeronautics, and engineering disciplines. Examination of other scientific and technical information classification systems showed similar discipline-centric weaknesses. Traditional, library-oriented classification systems represented all disciplines, but were too generalized to serve the needs of a scientific and technically oriented digital library. Lack of a suitable existing …

A Study Of The Internal Family Systems Model Applied To Remarried Couples Of Stepfamilies In Different Stages Of Adjustment, Susan Marie Carter Jan 1998

A Study Of The Internal Family Systems Model Applied To Remarried Couples Of Stepfamilies In Different Stages Of Adjustment, Susan Marie Carter

Dissertations

Problem. Stepfamilies are becoming the largest family type in the United States. This has significant implications for understanding the complications of remarriage and providing clinical interventions that support the adjustment process of stepfamilies. The Internal Family Systems Model, developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, asserts that an individual's personality is multiple naturally, and that there are interactions within the individual that have significant impact on their external systems. In applying the IFS model to the study of stepfamilies, this present study identifies the IFS maps of the partners of remarried couples active in stepfamily interaction and to determine how this IFS …

A Longitudinal Study On The Essence Of Success Development As Seen By Caribbean Canadian Women In The Storied Landscape Of Their Lived Experience, Glenda-Mae Greene Jan 1998

A Longitudinal Study On The Essence Of Success Development As Seen By Caribbean Canadian Women In The Storied Landscape Of Their Lived Experience, Glenda-Mae Greene

Dissertations

Problem. Caribbean Canadians are often susceptible to negative stereotyping because of issues of social class and length of residence in Canada. This study describes how three Caribbean Canadian young women avoided stereotype vulnerability and journeyed to their definition of success. This narrative study focuses on themes which acted as catalysts for success in their lives. The data collection began with interviews conducted during their high school years and concluded with another set of interviews in the post-college years. The study records their stories as they strive to develop and achieve their idea of success in the non-school world.

Method. Through …
