Catholic Judges In Capital Cases, Amy Coney Barrett, John H. Garvey Jan 1998

Catholic Judges In Capital Cases, Amy Coney Barrett, John H. Garvey

Journal Articles

The Catholic Church's opposition to the death penalty places Catholic judges in a moral and legal bind. While these judges are obliged by oath, professional commitment, and the demands of citizenship to enforce the death penalty, they are also obliged to adhere to their church's teaching on moral matters. Although the legal system has a solution for this dilemma by allowing the recusal of judges whose convictions keep them from doing their job, Catholic judges will want to sit whenever possible without acting immorally. However, litigants and the general public are entitled to impartial justice, which may be something a …

Community-Based Education And Service: The Hpsisn Experience, Sherril B. Glemmon, Barbara A. Holland, Anu F. Shinnamon, Beth A. Morris

Partnerships/Community

Health services delivery is increasingly shifting to community-based settings. The competencies required of future health professionals require a shift in their educational preparation. Service leaning is suggested as an educational method with the potential to reform health professions education in tandem with the changes occurring in the health services delivery. The Health Professions Schools in Service to the Nation Program (HPSISN), a US demonstration project of service learning in the health professions, examines the impact of service leaning on students, faculty, communities and institutions across a wide array of universities and community settings. This paper describes the evaluation of the …

Service-Learning In The Community - Are We Ready For The Journey?, William Finger

Partnerships/Community

It's late Sunday afternoon in downtown Raleigh, NC, in a low concrete building next to the railroad tracks. We are working in a small room where the 40 residents will eat supper in about an hour, when a church group serves the only full meal of the day for many of the residents. We have folded the tables and pushed them against the wall. Most of the residents are watching television in the only other common room in the building or lying on their bunks in the men's or women's dorm, each a single large room. A few are in …

Sex Differences In The Relations Between Sex Guilt And Sexual Experience, Melanie M. Brown

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine whether sex differences exist in the relations between sex guilt and sexual behavior. Past research has examined variables that affect sex guilt and found that sex guilt and sexual behavior are inversely related. This study specifically examined sex differences and how they affect this relation. The participants were 163 male and female undergraduate students at Eastern Illinois University. Mosher's revised Sex guilt Inventory and Paulson and Sputa's Sexual Behavior Frequency survey were administered along with a biographical data sheet.

Challenges And Strategies For Success With Service-Learning In Preservice Teacher Education, Jeffrey B. Anderson, Terry Pickeral Jan 1998

Challenges And Strategies For Success With Service-Learning In Preservice Teacher Education, Jeffrey B. Anderson, Terry Pickeral

Service Learning, General

This study examined challenges to the use of service-learning in preservice teacher education and also strategies used to overcome those challenges. We surveyed 123 teacher educators, education deans, and state department of education service-learning coordinators to gain their perspective regarding challenges most critical to the use of service-learning in teacher education. We then interviewed 42 of the survey respondents to obtain detailed descriptions of specific strategies used to overcome challenges. Results indicate the most critical challenges relate to lack of time for teacher educators to plan and implement service-learning, an already overcrowded curriculum, and a lack of alignment of service-learning …

Sraffa's Early Philosophical Thinking, John B. Davis Jan 1998

Sraffa's Early Philosophical Thinking, John B. Davis

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

This paper investigates a number of aspects of Piero Sraffa's early philosophical thinking by placing him within the historical materialist tradition of reasoning about the relation of ideas to the historical process. It first distinguishes Alfred Marshall's views about the historical development of ideas by addressing Marshall's responses to the criticisms of William Cunningham of the English Historical School. Marshall's concept of economics as a universal engine of discovery was rejected by Sraffa in his early writings. Sraffa's critique of Marshall is then argued to lead to two early philosophical commitments on Sraffa's part: that deductivist modes of explanation are …

Nineteenth-Century American Housekeeping Books : Women's Workplace Manuals Historical Research In Technical Writing, Melanie C. Woods Jan 1998

Nineteenth-Century American Housekeeping Books : Women's Workplace Manuals Historical Research In Technical Writing, Melanie C. Woods

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes three American housekeeping books—Lydia Maria Child's The American Frugal Housewife, Catherine Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe's The American Woman's Home, and Helen Campbell Stuart's The Easiest Way in Housekeeping and Cooking—as historical examples of technical writing. The study follows current recommendations for historical research in the field, namely, to analyze technical writing texts in consideration of their historical context. This involves determining what constituted technical writing in the nineteenth century; considering the publishing context of the study; and applying this definition to analyze three housekeeping books as technical manuals. These texts exemplify technical writing …

Adding Zest To Opac Instruction: Humor And The Unexpected, Bonnie Petry

Library Faculty Publications & Presentations

This article evolved from " Getting Students to NOTIS, "

a presentation that the author gave at the 1995 Chicago NOTIS Users

Group Meeting (NUGM) conference. Humor is a desirable element of

all types of instruction, particularly bibliographic instruction. A good

method for injecting some humor into bibliographic instruction is

introducing whimsical catalog entries. The author identifies five types

of bibIiographic records useful for this approach, provides strategies for

locating them, and suggests ways to incorporate them into a class.

Contaminated Communities: A Video Documentary Of The Alberton, Montana Mixed-Chemical Spill And An Analysis Of How Its Effects On Toxics Victims Fits Into A Larger Contamination Framework From A Political Ecology Perspective, Lisa A. Mosca

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The small rural mountain town of Alberton, MT located 32 miles west of Missoula, MT was the 1996 site of the largest contamination event in railroad history involving a mixture of chemicals. On April 11, 1996 a Montana Rail Link train derailed just west of the town of Alberton, leaking 130,000 pounds of chlorine gas, 17,000 of potassium cresylate (spent oil refinery waste), and 85 dry bulk pounds of sodium chlorate into the Alberton environment. Approximately 1000 people were evacuated from their homes, many for the seventeen day evacuation period that followed. The video documentary project that I embarked on …

Exercising The Doctrine Of Judicial Review By Establishing A Constitutional Court In Mexico, Irma Leticia Leal-Moya Jan 1998

Exercising The Doctrine Of Judicial Review By Establishing A Constitutional Court In Mexico, Irma Leticia Leal-Moya

LLM Theses and Essays

This thesis focuses on the doctrine of judicial review and the need to establish a constitutional court in Mexico. The paper critically examines the doctrine of judicial review under the common law (US) and civil law (Germany) jurisdictions. Although the doctrine of judicial review in Mexico is a combination of both models, several decades of institutional arrangements prevent the Mexican judicial system from achieving effective instruments to enforce basic constitutional principles and maintain an equilibrium of powers. This thesis proposes a constitutional review that will create independent constitutional courts, with powers to review executive and legislative powers.

Conceptualizing The Impact Of Health Care Crimes On The Poor, Brian K. Payne Jan 1998

Conceptualizing The Impact Of Health Care Crimes On The Poor, Brian K. Payne

Sociology & Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Past research shows that a small percentage of health care employees commit an assortment of criminal acts while on the job. Missing from previous research, however, is an examination of the effects such acts have on the poor (i.e. the victims). This paper fills this void by considering the effects of three broadly defined health care crimes: Medicaid fraud, elder abuse, and prescription fraud. In addition to the direct victimization experiences of those served by me health care system, the physical, economic, and time losses are also considered. Implications for future research and policy are provided.

This article presents a demographic profile of grandparents, using the National Survey of Families and Households. Specific dimensions of grandparenthood addressed include grandparents' survival, the timing of grandparenthood, grandparents' involvement in other roles, surrogate parenting, and stepgrandparents. The data indicate considerable heterogeneity among grandparents of different genders and races or ethnicities. They also suggest modifications in previous descriptions of modern grandparenthood.

A Learning Strategy For The Application Of Interpersonal Theories, William A. Ausmus Jan 1998

A Learning Strategy For The Application Of Interpersonal Theories, William A. Ausmus

Iowa Journal of Communication

Scientific theories are used primarily to predict and control. In that regard interpersonal theories are not very useful if applied to interpersonal relationships. But theories are also used to evaluate, describe, explain, and understand (Cragan & Shields, 1998). The learning project I describe is designed for students of interpersonal communication as they learn to use and apply interpersonal theories to their everyday relational interactions. The learning project consists of three components. 1. Students are asked to identify and describe an interpersonal communication problem. The problem is analyzed using interpersonal theories and a prescription/solution based in theory is also developed. 2. …

Acclaiming, Attacking, And Defending On Political Talk Radio, Joseph R. Blaney, P. M. Pier Jan 1998

Acclaiming, Attacking, And Defending On Political Talk Radio, Joseph R. Blaney, P. M. Pier

Iowa Journal of Communication

In recent years, the importance of talk radio has grown dramatically. From 1989 to 1994, the number of news/talk radio stations grew from 308 to 1,028 (Petrozello, 1994a). Furthermore, one seventh of all radio revenue in 1993 came from buys at talk outlets (Petrozello, 1994b). Among American adults, 18% report listening to political talk shows at least twice every week (Cappella, Turow, & Jamieson, 1996). Anecdotal evidence suggests chat calk radio can be highly influential in the electoral process (Zerbinos, 1995/1996). On February 12, 1996, the leading contenders for the Republican presidential nomination appeared ad seriatum on Des Moines calk …
