Instituting Environmental Protection: From Red To Green In Poland, Daniel H. Cole Jan 1998

Instituting Environmental Protection: From Red To Green In Poland, Daniel H. Cole

Books & Book Chapters by Maurer Faculty

Under socialism, Poland suffered tremendous environmental devastation. After socialism, Poland's environmental performance has improved remarkably. This book explains that system-specific institutions of socialism undermined environmental protection by creating regulatory conflicts of interest that led the Party/state to soften budget and law constraints on polluters. Those problems have diminished in post-Communist Poland as socialist legal, political and economic institutions have been replaced by liberal-democratic institutions and competitive markets. The analysis carries important implications for an institutional theory of environmental protection.

The Problem Of Verbal Reports In Recreation Research: Review, Recommendations, And New Directions, Bill Borrie Jan 1998

The Problem Of Verbal Reports In Recreation Research: Review, Recommendations, And New Directions, Bill Borrie

Society and Conservation Faculty Publications

Recent work of cognitive and social psychologists has questioned the ability of subjects to accurately remember and report their experiences. This has particular significance for recreation research as the survey questions we ask of visitors change from more stable visit and group characteristics to reports of conditions, experiences and feelings. Strategies exist to encourage accurate recall, particlarly by minimizing the delay between event and report such as is provided by the Experience Sampling Method.

What Does Educational Technology Mean In The Promotion Of Student Achievement : A Literature Review, Fongching Lee Jan 1998

What Does Educational Technology Mean In The Promotion Of Student Achievement : A Literature Review, Fongching Lee

Graduate Research Papers

Research indicates that educational technology has a valued status, especially in the promotion of student learning. The theory behind the study of educational technology includes the four paradigms defined by Saettler (1990): the media view, the communications and systems view, the behavioral sciences view, and the cognitive science concept. This theory serves as the basis for the implementation of educational technology by the teachers.

Implementing educational technology, in special education and regular education (k-12), has indicated positive influences on student achievement. Greater student achievement would translate to better worker-citizens for the United States, thereby allowing the country to be competitive …

Integrated Humanities: A Content Model For Senior High School Gifted, Jolene Kay Teske

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this project was to develop an integrated humanities content model for senior high school gifted students. It began as a vision and has developed into a clear content model that will be piloted at the writer's school in the fall of 1999. Through the literature review and working revisions, the writer has become convinced that this type of model is one viable and defensible option for programming for intellectually gifted students at the senior high school level.

Barriers To Effective Programming Of Rural Gifted And Talented Students, Linda K. Moehring Jan 1998

Barriers To Effective Programming Of Rural Gifted And Talented Students, Linda K. Moehring

Graduate Research Papers

Gifted and talented students in rural areas have barriers that are specific to them. Through a review of literature on gifted and talented students in rural schools this writer has determined five barriers to effective educational programming: (1) Anti-intellectualism as a societal attitude; (2) isolation of rural gifted students; (3) the all-encompassing role of the gifted and talented teacher; (4) inadequate curricular or programming opportunities; and (5) lack of funding.

The review and analysis of literature on the rural gifted and talented include the recommendation that much more research needs to be conducted in the area of service to rural …

Substantial Assistance And Sentence Severity: Is There A Correlation Substantial Assistance, Ian Weinstein Jan 1998

Substantial Assistance And Sentence Severity: Is There A Correlation Substantial Assistance, Ian Weinstein

Faculty Scholarship

How much more severe are sentences imposed in districts with low substantial assistance rates than those in which the rate is very high? In the aggregate, not at all. At first blush this may puzzle readers because substantial assistance (SA) departures are very unevenly distributed across districts and SA accounts for nearly two-thirds of all downward departures, almost 7,900 of the 12,000 in fiscal 1996. Although this pattern could result in gross disparities among districts, my analysis of inter-district sentencing patterns reveals no statistically significant correlation between the rate of SA departures and the average length of sentences imposed in …

First Circuit: A Study Of Gender Bias In And Around The Courts, Bruce M. Selya Jan 1998

First Circuit: A Study Of Gender Bias In And Around The Courts, Bruce M. Selya

University of Richmond Law Review

Beginning with the state courts of New Jersey in 1984, almost every state in the country and numerous federal circuits have mounted initiatives to address issues of gender bias in the courts. While individual approaches have varied, each of these judicial units has displayed an increasing sensitivity to the potential problems of bias in the courts and a desire to actively improve the treatment of female litigants, witnesses, employees, and attorneys throughout the judicial system.

Changes In The Personal And Teaching Efficacy Levels Of Teachers Exposed To The Focus Model, Gary Russell, John W. Fraas, Isadore Newman Jan 1998

Changes In The Personal And Teaching Efficacy Levels Of Teachers Exposed To The Focus Model, Gary Russell, John W. Fraas, Isadore Newman

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes in the teacher efficacy levels of teachers exposed to an instructional model referred to as FOCUS. The analysis revealed that a majority of the participants had pre-treatment efficacy scores that corresponded to higher post-treatment efficacy scores, on at least one of the two efficacy scales, for the participants who were exposed to the FOCUS model. These finds, although they should only be considered preliminary due to the nature of the research design employed in this study, do suggest the need for further study of the FOCUS model’s impact on teacher …

Wayne State University Dissertations

This study examined empirically women’s interpersonal workplace conflict management styles. This study’s purpose was to add to the knowledge base of women and conflict management. The research question was to determine whether social characteristics such as feminism, race, age, single head of household status, religion, and social class explain differences in conflict management among women. Research Hypotheses 1 through 6 were that significant differences based on feminism, age, race, single head of household, social class, and religion would be found among the study’s respondents in their choice of five styles of conflict management. Research Hypothesis 7 was that feminism would …

Migration And Identity Processes Among Somali Immigrants In Canada, Abdi M. Kusow Jan 1998

Migration And Identity Processes Among Somali Immigrants In Canada, Abdi M. Kusow

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation represents a study of the migration processes of Somalis to Canada, and as such, it seeks to contribute to knowledge about the adjustment processes of relocation. The theoretical concepts within which the discussion of this dissertation is based are mainly derived from symbolic interactions. Thirty in-depth interviews from Somali immigrants and refugees in Toronto, Canada constituted the primary data. The data from the Somali immigrants from Toronto indicate that the process of migration intrinsically involves identity challenges and transformations. This process further raises questions about the nature of identity challenges and race relations that these individuals encounter once …
