A Proposal For The Development Of Fort Hays State University Service Learning Program, Dan Kahl
A Proposal For The Development Of Fort Hays State University Service Learning Program, Dan Kahl
Higher Education
"Service Learning" is quickly becoming a style of education that is recognized for its' effectiveness and practical benefits. Linking class curriculum with hands-on applications is often referred to as "experiential education". Service Learning is a form of experiential education identified by an equal emphasis on academic learning and service to others. The combination of focusing on meeting community needs, identifying learning objectives, and intentionally reflecting on what is being learned makes service learning different from plain volunteerism or community service.
Service-Learning Projects In Composition And Beyond, Thomas Deans, Zan Meyer-Goncalves
Service-Learning Projects In Composition And Beyond, Thomas Deans, Zan Meyer-Goncalves
Higher Education
All college teachers want their courses to be relevant and provocative, and to encourage students to be more active learners of the discipline, participants in the academy, and citizens in the wider community. As teachers of composition, we first experimented with combining community service with classroom teaching because it promised to advance teaching aims we value, especially making connections between academic courses and community needs, and between cognitive thinking and ethical social action. And we continue with service-learning projects because our experience and students' responses suggest a significant degree of success in meeting those goals. But we are certainly not …
Service Learning As A Strategy To Prepare Teacher Candidates For Contemporary Diverse Classrooms, Deborah Hamm, David Dowell, Jean Houck
Service Learning As A Strategy To Prepare Teacher Candidates For Contemporary Diverse Classrooms, Deborah Hamm, David Dowell, Jean Houck
Higher Education
The article describes a service-learning program jointly developed, implemented, and evaluated by a large university and a culturally and linguistically diverse urban school district. Each semester, over 200 undergraduate students preparing to be teachers learn first-hand about contemporary classrooms by assisting at-risk students. Program evaluation found changes in the undergraduates' attitudes about the importance of social and individual difference on children's learning.
Community Service-Learning In Teacher Education: A Report On Innovative Programs In New England, Beth Wohlleb, Robert Maloy
Community Service-Learning In Teacher Education: A Report On Innovative Programs In New England, Beth Wohlleb, Robert Maloy
Higher Education
As the strengths of community service-learning are becoming more recognized by educators at all levels, many institutions of higher education are incorporating CSL as a dynamic pedagogy into their teacher education programs. Many schools or departments of education encourage or require certification candidates to perform CSL as part of their teacher training as ways to learn about the teaching profession through the practice of teaching and reflection. Fewer schools integrate service-learning into their teacher education program in another way: by teaching preservice teachers how to use service-learning as a pedagogy with children in their own future classrooms. This second group …
Higher Education And Civic Responsibility, Alexander W. Astin
Higher Education And Civic Responsibility, Alexander W. Astin
Higher Education
It goes without saying that higher education plays a major part in shaping civic life in modern American society. Our colleges and universities not only educate each new generation of leaders in government, business, science, law, medicine, the clergy, and other advanced professions, but are also responsible for setting the standards and training the personnel who will educate the entire citizenry at the precollegiate level. Higher education institutions can also exert important societal influences through the scientific, technological, and cultural knowledge produced by their faculties. Expanding And Sustaining Partnerships, Judith A. Ramaley
Expanding And Sustaining Partnerships, Judith A. Ramaley
Higher Education
The Community Outreach Partnership Centers (COPC) Program requires adaptations in the university environment. We must examine and reinterpret (1) the roles and responsibilities of faculty; (2) the design of the undergraduate curriculum; (3) the structures of the university that create the capacity and support to sustain different working relationships with the community; and (4) our definitions of success and quality.
How Undergraduates Are Affected By Service Participation, Alexander W. Astin, Linda J. Sax
How Undergraduates Are Affected By Service Participation, Alexander W. Astin, Linda J. Sax
Higher Education
Based on entering freshman and follow-up data collected from 3,450 students (2,287 women and 1,163 men) attending 42 institutions with federally funded community service programs, the impact of community service participation on undergraduate student development was examined. Even after regression analyses controlled for individual student characteristics at the time of college entry, including the propensity to engage in service, results indicate that participating in service during the undergraduate years substantially enhances the student's academic development, life skill development, and sense of civic responsibility.

Genetic Technology And Its Impact On Culpability For Criminal Actions , Marcia Johnson
Genetic Technology And Its Impact On Culpability For Criminal Actions , Marcia Johnson
Cleveland State Law Review
This article addresses only one issue, one which our judicial system ultimately must address: the criminal responsibility one will bear for committing a crime when the actions are determined by the actor's genetic make-up. Part I of the article traces the roots of genetic research from Darwinism to eugenics and Nazi racial purity theories. Part II reviews theories and studies which support the concept of genetic influence on social, particularly criminal, behavior. Part III considers the impact of the genetic revolution on our criminal justice system with special emphasis on the effect on our system's fundamental concept of free will. …

Sugar And Spice And Everything: Reflections On A Feminist Aesthetic, Deborah Smith-Shank
Sugar And Spice And Everything: Reflections On A Feminist Aesthetic, Deborah Smith-Shank
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Over the past 25 years, feminist art, art criticism, and action have allowed insights in to the work of women artists. Because culture imposes an assumed unity on a diversity of codes and has a naturalizing function, it makes the status quo appear as given and enduring. Feminist artwork disrupts common cultural assumptions by purposefully calling into question the arbitrariness of cultural sign systems. It brings into the conversation those cultural signs which are routinely unexamined and forces a look. This article is about feminist artwork, feminist context (s), and my own development as a woman, artist, teacher, and participant …
Employment Discrimination On The Basis Of Sexual Orientation In Institutions Of Higher Education: A Survey Of Faculty Opinions, Catherine Ann Christie
Employment Discrimination On The Basis Of Sexual Orientation In Institutions Of Higher Education: A Survey Of Faculty Opinions, Catherine Ann Christie
Theses and Dissertations
Federal law does not prohibit employment discrimination based on sexual orientation. As is the case for other professionals, an educator who is a gay male or lesbian has had no protection from this form of discrimination unless it is specifically prohibited by a state or local law, or an institutional policy. Because they have been legally prohibited from marrying, domestic partners of gay and lesbian educators have not been entitled to share the employment benefits of their partners. This study examined opinions of faculty in four-year colleges and universities in Arkansas regarding employment discrimination based on sexual orientation in institutions …

A Decade Of Indecision: The Effects Of Federal Student Financial Aid Policy From 1987 To 1996 On Within-Year Persistence Of Four-Year Undergraduate Students, James Erwin Cofer, Sr.
Theses and Dissertations
Almost from the inception of the student loan program in the 1960's, there has been speculation about the impact of debtload on student decisions about attending college, persisting in college, and life decisions after graduation. However, little research has been done on this area. As Congress debates funding higher education, the question arises once more of the impact of loans on college student attendance. This study examines the influence of student debtload on college persistence, for the time periods 1986-87 and 1995-96, almost an entire decade. Using the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS) of 1986-87 and the National Postsecondary …
Where Angels Fear To Tread, Mary Horgan, Francis Douglas
Where Angels Fear To Tread, Mary Horgan, Francis Douglas
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
This paper considers education as the fulfilment of a person's overall potential as a human being. It thus concentrates on the multiplicity of factors which interact and interweave to produce ulfilled, caring members of our society. The whole notion of child development can only be understood within a cultural context. As Mead (1932) showed, child rearing practices differ from culture to culture and the role of adults in that culture has a strong influence on the type of activity in which their young offspring engage. For example, playing at mothers and fathers will obviously eflect the different functions that adults …

[Review Of] William G. Bowen And Derek Bok. The Shape Of The River: Long-Term Consequences Of Considering Race In College And University Admissions, Robert L. Perry
Ethnic Studies Review
The metaphor conveyed in the title, The Shape of the River: Long-Term Consequences of Considering Race in College and University Admissions, captures the undercurrents, uncharted obstructions, and twists and turns as they unfold through the experiences and research of two captains who have navigated the mysteries of their journey through Affirmative Action in higher education.
Anthropology And Ethnicity: From Herder To Hermeneutics, Jack Eller
Anthropology And Ethnicity: From Herder To Hermeneutics, Jack Eller
Ethnic Studies Review
For a long time, the central focus of anthropology has been on the study of the so-called traditional societies. However, with the transformation of those societies into "ethnicized" groups within state systems, anthropologists have had to rethink their concepts, theories, and methods. They have had to deal with, among others things, issues of cultural difference, cultural boundaries, and cultural movements. This article looks retrospectively at certain changes that have taken place in anthropology especially with regard to the study of ethnicity.

[Review Of] Raymond A. Bucko. The Lakota Ritual Of The Sweat Lodge, James V. Fenelon
Ethnic Studies Review
This well-researched book presents an excellent anthropological discussion of the "ritual" aspects of the "sweat lodge" as practiced among some Lakota, while posing some very thorny problems in terms of treatment of religion, knowledge and spirituality among Native American people (Deloria, 1995).

[Review Of] James P. Danky And Wayne A. Wiegand, Eds. Print Culture In A Diverse America. The History Of Communication Series, Ellen M. Gil-Gomez
Ethnic Studies Review
This volume functions both in illuminating minority perspectives in print culture and describing and furthering the field of "print culture studies." The introduction then both discusses the structure and purpose of the field and argues that the book's contents challenge it in a variety of ways. Three thematic sections follow which cover, respectively, "lost" serials, the publishing industry, and written reconstructions of historical events.
[Review Of] Elizabeth Martinez. De Colores Means All Of Us, Larry J. Estrada
[Review Of] Elizabeth Martinez. De Colores Means All Of Us, Larry J. Estrada
Ethnic Studies Review
Elizabeth Martinez, well known San Franciscan activist, author and journalist, in her most recent work endeavors to connect the movements of the 90s with the crucible of the 60s. Her narrative of the course of contemporary activism and insurgence in the United States gives the reader an introspective look into the underbelly of Chicano/Chicana activism in the 60s and the resultant conflicts which ensued from not initially addressing issues of sexism, classism and machismo within the Movimiento. She provocatively talks about the utilization of "chingon politics" and the suppression of the Chicana feminist voice which has ultimately led to attempts …

[Review Of] Peter C. Rollins And John E. O'Connor, Eds. Hollywood's Indians: The Portrayal Of The Native American In Film, Connie Jacobs
Ethnic Studies Review
Hollywood inherited conflicting myths of Native Americans: barbaric savages or "Noble Savage." Influenced by the latter romantic view, James Fenimore Cooper in print and George Catlin and Edward Curtis in art conveyed to an American public a portrait of a noble but vanishing race of America's first people. The dime store novels and Wild West shows of the late 1800s played with the dueling idea of a noble yet menacing Red Man, and Hollywood picked up this created myth of American Indians which, while ostensibly sympathetic, actually perpetuated stereotypes of a depraved and primitive race. Hollywood then packaged these images, …
[Review Of] Toyotomi Morimoto. Japanese Americans And Cultural Continuity: Maintaining Language And Heritage, Kumiko Takahara
[Review Of] Toyotomi Morimoto. Japanese Americans And Cultural Continuity: Maintaining Language And Heritage, Kumiko Takahara
Ethnic Studies Review
Japanese language schools in California are chronicled from the early twentieth century until the eve of World War II based mainly on the UCLA Japanese American Research Project Collections, Japanese language newspapers, and literatures by Issei (first generation Japanese immigrant) educators. Chapters two through five which follow a brief overview of the ethnic language schools of various immigrant groups illustrate Japanese immigrants' effort in transmitting their linguistic and cultural heritage to Nisei (American-born) children by supplementing their public school education with a Japanese language school curriculum in a hostile socio-political climate. The thematic coherence of the book is disrupted unfortunately …

[Review Of] Katheryn K. Russell. The Color Of Crime: Racial Hoaxes, White Fear, Black Protectionism, Police Harassment, And Other Macroaggressions, Calvin E. Harris
Ethnic Studies Review
Is Crime a problem or color or race? What about the question of disproportionality: Do blacks commit more crimes in proportion to their percentage of the total population? Does disproportionality, as one measure of crime statistics, tell the whole story? What is black protectionism? Probably the most critical question Russell raises is does a racial bias exist in the reporting of crime statistics in the United States? This is not the first time such an issue has been raised. These are among the major questions dealt with in The Color of Crime.
