Federal Policy And Alaska Native Languages Since 1867, Thomas L. Alton Apr 1998

Federal Policy And Alaska Native Languages Since 1867, Thomas L. Alton

Political Science

Researchers and the general public have often contended that punishment of children for speaking their native languages in schools is the cause of the decline of those languages. But native language loss in Alaska is rooted also in the choices Natives made themselves to accept English for its social, economic, and political opportunities. Since the United States purchased Alaska in 1867, English has replaced native languages as the first language learned by children in nearly all homes. Mapping Impacts Of Education For Wilderness Management Planning, Frederick Anthony Foster Apr 1998

Mapping Impacts Of Education For Wilderness Management Planning, Frederick Anthony Foster

Theses (Unassigned)

Wilderness education is considered a key response to abate physical impacts caused by wilderness recreationists, but education's impacts upon the psychological values of wilderness are unknown. This investigation used a wilderness purism scale to measure how minimum impact instruction affects the intensity and quality of a student's wilderness experience and the relation of these expectations and preferences to appreciation, knowledge, and concern for the environment as a whole, i.e., environmental literacy. A wilderness purism scale, a spatial scale, and wilderness management scale measured how wilderness education affects recreationists' limits of unacceptability in wilderness conditions. Effects of wilderness education on multiple …

Alcohol Control Policy And Native American Communities, Matthew Berman Apr 1998

Alcohol Control Policy And Native American Communities, Matthew Berman

ISER Reports

There is a long-standing debate over the degree to which control of alcohol supply is effective or makes sense as a policy direction for prevention of alcohol and drug abuse. The arguments on both sides of the control-of-supply debate are probably familiar to most alcohol researchers. However, it may be useful to review some empirical studies relevant to prevention policy for Native American populations. The remainder of the paper begins with a brief review of studies measuring effects of price and availability on alcohol consumption among North American and European populations. Then the review moves to focus on studies of …
