Reflective Remote Method Invocation, George K. Thiruvathukal, Lovely S. Thomas, Andy T. Korczynski

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Remote Method Invocation (RMI) is available in the current Java language design and implementation, providing the much-needed capability of allowing objects running in different Java processes to collaborate using a variation on the popular Remote Procedure Call (RPC).

Although RMI provides features which are desirable for high-performance distributed computing, its design and implementation are deficient in key areas of importance to the high-performance computing community in general. This paper addresses the key deficiencies of RMI and how these deficiencies affect the design and implementation of distributed object applications.

Reflective RMI (RRMI) is an open RMI implementation which makes better use …

Wide-Area Implementation Of The Message Passing Interface, Ian Foster, Jonathan Geisler, William Gropp, Nicholas Karonis, Ewing Lusk, George K. Thiruvathukal, Steven Tuecke

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Message Passing Interface (MPI) can be used as a portable, high-performance programming model for wide-area computing systems. The wide-area environment introduces challenging problems for the MPI implementor, due to the heterogeneity of both the underlying physical infrastructure and the software environment at different sites. In this article, we describe an MPI implementation that incorporates solutions to these problems. This implementation has beenconstructed by extending the Argonne MPICH implementation of MPI to use communicationservices provided by the Nexus communication library and authentication, resource allocation, process creation/management, and information services provided by the I-Soft system (initially) and the Globus metacomputing toolkit …

A Sociolinguistic Analysis Of Face-Threat And Face-Management In Potential Complaint Situations, Laura Hartley Jan 1998

A Sociolinguistic Analysis Of Face-Threat And Face-Management In Potential Complaint Situations, Laura Hartley

Faculty Publications - Department of Sociology

Within the pragmatics literature, a number of studies have investigated the speech act of complaining. In most cases, the researchers have failed to define a "complaint" before proceeding with analysis. The purpose of this study is to provide a theoretical definition of a "complaint" and to examine in-depth the linguistic details of the speech act of complaining, with a particular view to illuminating the linguistic devices employed in managing the "face" of the participants involved in Potential Complaint Situations. In addition to dealing with micro-level questions regarding how complaints are realized in various circumstances, this study also sheds light on …

Plant Ecology And Community Dynamics Of Machair Systems In The Outer Hebrides, Nia Wyn Owen Jan 1998

Plant Ecology And Community Dynamics Of Machair Systems In The Outer Hebrides, Nia Wyn Owen

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The machair systems of the Outer Hebrides of Scotland are renowned for the diversity and conservation value of their plant communities. However, machair systems have a restricted distribution and are prone to disturbance from both anthropogenic and environmental sources. The effects of two major anthropogenic and environmental disturbances (agriculture and burial by wind-blown sand) on the Kildonan and Drimsdale machair systems on South Uist, and the dynamic responses of machair vegetation to these human and natural agencies were described and quantified. The investigated machair systems comprised a diversity of sand dune, grassland and marginal vegetation types which were spatially distributed …

Development Of A Low Pressure-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Ion Source For Mass Spectrometry, Gavin Thomas O'Connor Jan 1998

Development Of A Low Pressure-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Ion Source For Mass Spectrometry, Gavin Thomas O'Connor

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

A low pressure-inductively coupled plasma (LP-ICP) ion source has been investigated for the production of atomic and molecular ions for mass spectrometry (MS). A dedicated LPICP- MS was constructed, by modifying a Hewlett Packard mass selective detector, to detect ions from the LP-ICP. The ion sampling interface and ion optics were designed using established theory and the use of a computer simulation program. Perfluorotributylamine was continuously introduced into the LP-ICP, via a molecular leak, and the ion sampling interface, plasma forward power, and plasma gas flow rates, were optimised. When the LP-ICP ion source was sustained at 6W with a …

Robustness And Precision Of Holocene Palaeoclimatic Records From Peatlands Using Testate Amoebae, Dawn Hendon Jan 1998

Robustness And Precision Of Holocene Palaeoclimatic Records From Peatlands Using Testate Amoebae, Dawn Hendon

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

This thesis represents the first attempt to use quantitative testate amoebae (Protozoa: Rhizopoda) analysis to measure hydrological fluctuations in British peatbogs over the Holocene. Changes in the fossil species assemblage are used to reconstruct the mean annual water table records at different locations on mire surfaces using a transfer function designed for application on oligotrophic peatlands. The transfer function was found to provide more precise reconstructions for depth to water table than percentage soil moisture. Multiple cores were extracted from three of the Border Mires; Coom Rigg Moss and Butterburn Flow (both intermediate ombrotrophic bogs) and The Wou (a minerogenic …

Modelling And Monitoring Of Phosphorus Transport And Speciation In Soil, Darren Michael William Peat Jan 1998

Modelling And Monitoring Of Phosphorus Transport And Speciation In Soil, Darren Michael William Peat

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Flow through soil into groundwater has been classically conceptualised as taking place through a set of aligned capillary tubes. In solute transport models these approximations are also present. Pore-Cor (a network model) has been used to model the void structure of soil by using water retention and mercury porosimetry curves. The model successfully predicts trends in saturated hydraulic conductivity. The effect of the assumptions used in the Pore-Cor geometry have been investigated by comparing of two dimensional slices of the simulated networks with two dimensional image analysis data. The geometric limitations of the model cause packing inefficiencies which prevent the …

Particle-Water Interactions Of Hydrophobic Organic Micropollutants In Marine Systems, M. Carl Rawling Jan 1998

Particle-Water Interactions Of Hydrophobic Organic Micropollutants In Marine Systems, M. Carl Rawling

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

An understanding of the reactivity of hydrophobic organic micropollutants (HOMs) is of paramount importance to water quality managers because of their toxicity, persistence, and liability to bioaccumulate. In this study, the role played by the main estuarine variables (organic matter, suspended particulate matter [SPM], particle type and salinity) on HOM behaviour was investigated by employing samples from estuaries with different geochemical signatures (Chupa, Russia, and the Dart, Plym, Beaulieu and Carnon, U K ) . A laboratory-based technique was developed for the determination of the solubility and sorptive behaviour of HOMs using 14C-labelled, beta-emitting organic compounds (2,2\5,5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (2,2’5,5'-TCB), bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate ester …

In-Situ Preconcentration Of Trace Metals In Natural Waters And Brines With Analysis By Flow Injection Atomic Spectrometry, Robert Anthony Nickson Jan 1998

In-Situ Preconcentration Of Trace Metals In Natural Waters And Brines With Analysis By Flow Injection Atomic Spectrometry, Robert Anthony Nickson

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Atomic spectrometric techniques such as ICP-MS offer exceptional sensitivity and multi-element capability for trace metal analysis but the formation of polyatomic ions (particularly below m/z = 80) can cause serious interferences. Such interfering species may be introduced via precursor atoms in atmospheric gases, the sample matrix or impurities in the reagents and gases. There is an environmental need to establish rapid multi-element methods of analysis for trace metals in environmental waters and the subsequent speciation of these trace elements. Natural waters, particularly those with a high dissolved solids content such as sea water are difficult to analyse directly by ICP …

The Dagenais decision demonstrates the continued independence …

Legal Images Of Motherhood: Conflicting Definitions From Welfare "Reform," Family And Criminal Law, Jane C. Murphy Jan 1998

Legal Images Of Motherhood: Conflicting Definitions From Welfare "Reform," Family And Criminal Law, Jane C. Murphy

All Faculty Scholarship

Part I of this Article explores the traditional idealized view of motherhood that child placement statutes and court decisions reflect. These laws include statutes and case law in custody disputes between parents and in child protection proceedings under civil and criminal laws where the dispute is between the parent and the state. Part II contrasts the legal construct of motherhood that child placement laws embody with the legal image of mothers in child support and welfare law.

Part III examines the impact of these conflicting images of motherhood on a particular group of mothers -- battered women. Battered women illuminate …

Catch Me If You Can! Resolving The Ethical Tragedies In The Brave New World Of Jury Selection, José F. Anderson Jan 1998

Catch Me If You Can! Resolving The Ethical Tragedies In The Brave New World Of Jury Selection, José F. Anderson

All Faculty Scholarship

Since the Supreme Court's opinion in Batson v. Kentucky, the rules and tools available to lawyers for selecting juries have changed dramatically from what they had been for decades in American courtrooms. The Court's well intentioned effort in Batson to attempt to eliminate racial discrimination from the process of jury selection set in motion a series of modifications in lawyer decision making which have changed how lawyers fill the jury box. Prior to Batson, the sacrosanct tool known as the peremptory challenge had been virtually unassailable as a jury selection weapon. Abuses by prosecutors, particularly in the southern United States, …

The Specially Investigated President, Charles Tiefer Jan 1998

The Specially Investigated President, Charles Tiefer

All Faculty Scholarship

This article argues that the new legal status - the "specially investigated President" - conferred upon recent presidents reflects an unprecedented change in the criminal investigation process of the President. Although recent presidents have experienced formal criminal investigations, each have used creative and legitimate ways to escape indictment, trial, or impeachment. By investigating President Bush and President Clinton's ability to successfully avoid prosecution, this article presents an analytical framework to explain the issues surrounding the "specially investigated President," and offers suggestions on how to reform the process.

In his analysis, the author illustrates the tension between opposing viewpoints regarding the …

Recent Trends In Merger Enforcement In The United States: The Increasing Impact Of Economic Analysis, Robert H. Lande, James Langenfeld Jan 1998

Recent Trends In Merger Enforcement In The United States: The Increasing Impact Of Economic Analysis, Robert H. Lande, James Langenfeld

All Faculty Scholarship

From its modern origins more than thirty years ago federal merger policy has centered around the use of standard surrogates for market power to make presumptions about the likely effects of mergers. Since that time it has been evolving towards an increasingly complex approach as economic considerations have expanded their influence on merger policy. This trend was solidified in the 1982 revision of the Department of Justice's Merger Guidelines, accelerated by the Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission 1992 Horizontal Merger Guidelines' increased emphasis on unilateral (as opposed to collusive) anticompetitive effects, and has reached new heights in the …

U.S. “Methods Awareness” (Methodenbewußtsein) For German Jurists, James Maxeiner Jan 1998

U.S. “Methods Awareness” (Methodenbewußtsein) For German Jurists, James Maxeiner

All Faculty Scholarship

The purpose of this contribution is to help develop Methods Awareness in German jurists unfamiliar with American law. It shows how distant from German understanding present-day American practice is. It proceeds from Fikentscher's thumbnail sketch of German Prevailing Teaching: "this method starts from norm-thinking, therefore thinks in rules, that are applied to the case at hand." It refers to the core elements of this teaching, namely the place of the legal norm (Rechtssatz) in the legal order (Rechtsordnung) and its application to a particular set of facts (i.e., subsumption), and discusses the significance of these concepts in American law. It …

Isolation And Characterisation Of Immunoglobulin Gene Superfamily Molecules From Lower Vertebrates (Fish), Bingmei Yang Jan 1998

Isolation And Characterisation Of Immunoglobulin Gene Superfamily Molecules From Lower Vertebrates (Fish), Bingmei Yang

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Acquired immunity in vertebrates is a major mechanism of the immune system, which enables the vertebrates to discriminate self and non-self The most important feature of acquired immunity is the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) restricted-cellular immune response. This involves several important elements including MHC molecules and T cell antigen receptor (TCR) complex. MHC molecules are glycoproteins that recognise and present self and foreign peptides to T-cells via the TCR, causing the T cell to proliferate and secrete cytokines. There is increasing evidence that peripheral T cells and MHC restricted cellular immune responses occur in all vertebrates. However, the exact nature …
