Landfill Design, Construction And Non-Invasive Monitoring, Amanda Jane Hopper Jan 1998

Landfill Design, Construction And Non-Invasive Monitoring, Amanda Jane Hopper

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Three techniques are investigated in order to assess their applicability for use in landfill design, construction and monitoring. Firstly, an assessment is made of QA procedures during liner construction through the detailed evaluation of two case studies. Construction QA procedures on-site are compared to available guidelines. The research illustrates the requirement for standardised, regulated QA procedures on landfill sites in order to provide a recognised framework for construction control. The Moisture Condition Value Test (MCV) is evaluated for use as a method of monitoring the placement of compacted clay landfill liners. London Clay and Mercia Mudstone, collected from the QA …

This Note discusses the need for a modern international legal regime that would address navigational and environmental safety in the Turkish Straits in a manner consistent with customary international law of the transit passage through the straits used for international navigation. Part I provides an overview of the recent history of the Turkish Straits and the legal regimes regulating navigation in the Turkish Straits and other straits used for international navigation. Part II explores the positions and arguments of the parties involved in the dispute over the legality of the 1994 Turkish Regulations. Part III proposes that the circumstances surrounding …

Local Administration And The Binding Nature Of Community Directives: A Lesser Known Side Of European Legal Integration, Kurt Riechenberg Jan 1998

Local Administration And The Binding Nature Of Community Directives: A Lesser Known Side Of European Legal Integration, Kurt Riechenberg

Fordham International Law Journal

This article will deal with specific aspects of the divided-power system of the European Union and provide a legal analysis concerning federalism issues in the European Union raised before the Court of Justice that are similar to those in the United States. First, the article will reference recent U.S. case law on federalism. The bulk of the Article will concentrate on the question of whether and to what extent European Community ("EC") directives, as legislative instruments, are capable of mandating specific courses of action to be pursued on the local or regional level in Member States. Next, the article will …

Art Criticism

v. : ill. ; 22 cm (original analog pub.),If Art Criticism meets some of its editors’ hopes for it, we shall be able to claim the appearance of some art criticism, with subjects arising from the writers’ or editors’ decisions, rather than the art market’s. Articles on individual critics and on current groups and tendencies will lead towards the adequate history of art criticism so badly needed in relation to art and in relation to the literature of other disciplines. Health Insurance Portability: The Consequences Of Cobra, Brigitte C. Madrian Jan 1998

Health Insurance Portability: The Consequences Of Cobra, Brigitte C. Madrian

Faculty Publications

THE RESPONSE OF THE CLINTON ADMINISTRATION and Congress to the failed attempt at fundamental health care reform in 1993 has been a series of incremental measures that expand the government’s role in the health care system. One recent initiative, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), restricts the ability of insurers to exclude preexisting medical conditions from insurance coverage. It also requires insurance companies to issue or renew coverage for individuals who have been insured but who no longer have access to group health insurance coverage. Those provisions are intended to address the issue of health insurance …

Bureaucracy In The Postmodern World: Problems And Solutions, Paul C. Godfrey, Grant C. Madsen Jan 1998

Bureaucracy In The Postmodern World: Problems And Solutions, Paul C. Godfrey, Grant C. Madsen

Faculty Publications

This paper considers the problems presented by modern bureaucratic organizations within the framework of postmodern philosophy. Bureaucracy represents the logical outcome of the rational tradition in western philosophy. Because of their efficiency properties, individuals are both the beneficiaries and victims of bureaucratic behavior. We suggest that a solution to these problems will not be found by using existing philosophical frameworks. The French philosopher Jean-Francois Lyotard presents a model of postmodern relationships based on language games. We explore the concept of language games within bureaucratic settings.

Is Sound Just Noise, Joshua D. Coval, Tyler Shumway Jan 1998

Is Sound Just Noise, Joshua D. Coval, Tyler Shumway

Faculty Publications

This paper analyzes the information content of the ambient noise level in the Chicago Board of Trade's 30-year Treasury Bond futures trading pit. Controlling for a variety of other variables, including lagged price changes, trading volumes, and news announcements, we find that the sound level conveys information which is highly economically and statistically significant. In particular, we find increases in the sound level precede periods of high price volatility and increased trading volumes. Increases in the sound level also presage the placement of block trades and relative increases in customer-driven trading. Our results add to our understanding of the market …

Comparative Study Of Stock Trend Prediction Using Time Delay, Recurrent And Probabilistic Neural Networks, Donald C. Wunsch, Emad W. Saad, Danil V. Prokhorov Jan 1998

Comparative Study Of Stock Trend Prediction Using Time Delay, Recurrent And Probabilistic Neural Networks, Donald C. Wunsch, Emad W. Saad, Danil V. Prokhorov

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Three networks are compared for low false alarm stock trend predictions. Short-term trends, particularly attractive for neural network analysis, can be used profitably in scenarios such as option trading, but only with significant risk. Therefore, we focus on limiting false alarms, which improves the risk/reward ratio by preventing losses. To predict stock trends, we exploit time delay, recurrent, and probabilistic neural networks (TDNN, RNN, and PNN, respectively), utilizing conjugate gradient and multistream extended Kalman filter training for TDNN and RNN. We also discuss different predictability analysis techniques and perform an analysis of predictability based on a history of daily closing …

A Maximum Torque Per Ampere Control Strategy For Induction Motor Drives, O. Wasynczuk, Keith Corzine, S. D. Sudhoff, Jerry L. Tichenor, P. C. Krause, I. G. Hansen, L. M. Taylor Jan 1998

A Maximum Torque Per Ampere Control Strategy For Induction Motor Drives, O. Wasynczuk, Keith Corzine, S. D. Sudhoff, Jerry L. Tichenor, P. C. Krause, I. G. Hansen, L. M. Taylor

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a new control strategy is proposed which is simple in structure and has the straightforward goal of minimizing the stator current amplitude for a given load torque. It is shown that the resulting induction motor efficiency is reasonably close to optimal and that the approach is insensitive to variations in rotor resistance. Although the torque response is not as fast as in field-oriented (FO) control strategies, the response is reasonably fast. In fact, if the mechanical time constant is large relative to the rotor time constant, which is frequently the case, the sacrifice in dynamic performance is …

Dc Link Stabilized Field Oriented Control Of Electric Propulsion Systems, Keith Corzine, S. D. Sudhoff, Steven F. Glover, H. J. Hegner, H. N. Robey Jan 1998

Dc Link Stabilized Field Oriented Control Of Electric Propulsion Systems, Keith Corzine, S. D. Sudhoff, Steven F. Glover, H. J. Hegner, H. N. Robey

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Induction motor based electric propulsion systems can be used in a wide variety of applications including locomotives, hybrid electric vehicles, and ships. Field oriented control of these drives is attractive since it allows the torque to be tightly and nearly instantaneously controlled. However, such systems can be prone to negative impedance instability of the DC link. This paper examines this type of instability and sets forth a readily implemented albeit nonlinear control strategy to mitigate this potential problem.

Total Quality Management And Corporate Financial Performance: An Analysis Of The Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award Criteria, Alice Brigid Beechner Jan 1998

Total Quality Management And Corporate Financial Performance: An Analysis Of The Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award Criteria, Alice Brigid Beechner

Doctoral Dissertations

"The impact of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) Performance Excellence Criteria on corporate financial performance is examined. Three independent studies were performed to assess this relationship. The first included Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) winners. The second study involved 69 firms identified as Total Quality Management (TQM) firms and for the final study a sample of large American corporations who completed surveys which provided an estimate of the score the companies would have received on a MBNQA assessment were examined. The method for assessing the financial strength for all three studies was the metric Market Value Added …
