Hans Christian Andersen's Statue In Lincoln Park, Chicago, Birgit F. Larsen Jan 1998

Hans Christian Andersen's Statue In Lincoln Park, Chicago, Birgit F. Larsen

The Bridge

I barely noticed that they placed me in a flag-draped automobile and that, accompanied by an escort, it progressed slowly down a wide avenue, while crowds of people on the sidewalks, children and adults, cheered enthusiastically. --We drove through a large park, many times larger than Kongens Have ("The King's Garden", a park in Copenhagen), and here, too, there were rows upon rows of people, and finally we stopped in front of a statue - and lo and behold, it was myself, and looked just like me, sitting with a young swan at my feet. -- Then my heart melted, …

Tolerance And Antisemitism: Reflections Of Post-War America In The Films "Crossfire" (1947), "Gentleman's Agreement" (1947) And "Oliver Twist" (1948), Susan Rips Paley Jan 1998

Tolerance And Antisemitism: Reflections Of Post-War America In The Films "Crossfire" (1947), "Gentleman's Agreement" (1947) And "Oliver Twist" (1948), Susan Rips Paley

Student Work

This thesis explores conscious liberal tolerance attitudes in America after World War II. Its specific focus is antisemitism, and it utilizes Hollywood films Crossfire (1947), Gentleman's Agreement (1947) and the British Oliver Twist (1948) as the context for analysis. The origins of classical antisemitism are examined, as well as the history of antisemitism in England and America. American societal attitudes towards Jews are discussed and depictions of Jews in American films until 1947 are presented. The story and dialogue of each film is introduced, followed by the filmmakers' rationale for championing their films. Prerelease objections and concerns are addressed, and …

A Study Of The Impact Of Overage Middle School Students On Middle Schools, Daisy Reed, Caroline Kirkpatrick Jan 1998

A Study Of The Impact Of Overage Middle School Students On Middle Schools, Daisy Reed, Caroline Kirkpatrick

MERC Publications

A continuing issue in school reform efforts is the need to decrease dropout rates for students. Many dropouts are at-risk students who have failing grades, inadequate academic sills, and low levels of literacy. These students are often retained in grade, and eventually drop out. While students may actually drop out in high school, dropping out behaviors begin to occur in middle school or even earlier, in elementary school. Middle School students who are retained and become overage have the potential for having a negative impact on the school district and the school. More importantly, these students often suffer a decrease …

Classroom Assessment And Grading Practices: A Review Of The Literature, James H. Mcmillan, Daryl Workman Jan 1998

Classroom Assessment And Grading Practices: A Review Of The Literature, James H. Mcmillan, Daryl Workman

MERC Publications

This review of literature is an analysis of completed research on the nature and effect of classroom assessment practices and grading. In recent years the assessment of student performance has become a central focus of efforts to reform education (Cizek, 1997). Policy-makers have increasingly seen assessment as a measure of student and school accountability, influencing curriculum and teaching. At the center of this movement is the classroom teacher. It is the teacher who communicates standards and expectations through the assessments students experience, and it is the teacher who makes decisions daily about what students learn. Classroom assessments, because students experience …

Peptideaccumulation And Bitterness In Cheddar Cheese Made Using Single-Strain Lactococcus Lactis Starterswith Distinct Proteinase Specificities, Jeff Broadbent, M. Strickland, B. Weimer, M. E. Johnson, J. L. Steele

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

This study investigated peptide accumulation and bitterness in reduced- and full-fat Cheddar cheeses that were manufactured with single-strain Lactococcus lactis starters that had distinct cell envelope proteinase specificities. Micellar electrokinetic capillary electrophoresis of aqueous cheese extracts detected three large peaks, designated O, P, and Q, that eluted with peptide standards and increased in area during cheese maturation in a pattern that was distinct for each starter. Regression analysis of bitter flavor scores from trained sensory panels and individual OQ peak areas suggested that peaks P and Q had a negative and positive correlation, respectively, to this defect. Then, HPLC, capillary …

We Ask You To Consider: Learning About Practical Judgment In Lawyering, Mark Neal Aaronson Jan 1998

We Ask You To Consider: Learning About Practical Judgment In Lawyering, Mark Neal Aaronson

Clinical Law Review

When I need a good lawyer, I look for someone who is knowledgeable and conscientious and has integrity, but above all I want someone with good judgment. Though it is not that clear what we precisely mean when we talk about sound lawyering judgment, few would dispute its desirability and potential importance. Many are apt to question whether judgment can be taught in law school or any school. Nonetheless, I want to suggest that implicit in much of what we are doing in clinical legal education is trying to find ways to help law students exercise better judgment in their …

The Lawyer As Teacher: The Role Of Education In Lawyering, Kimberlee K. Kovach Jan 1998

The Lawyer As Teacher: The Role Of Education In Lawyering, Kimberlee K. Kovach

Clinical Law Review

An important part of the lawyer's professional work involves teaching people about the law and the legal system. Consequently, courses, educational programs and extracurricular activities within law schools should incorporate this task. Although opportunities for the law student to acquire teaching experience exist within established clinics and classes, law schools may also want to consider the creation of separate classes or clinics concentrating on the lawyer's role as a teacher. Education and the law are intertwined in a number of ways. Education directly influences the legal system. In order to become a lawyer, one must go to law school for …

Community Education: Creating A New Vision Of Legal Services Practice, Ingrid V. Eagly Jan 1998

Community Education: Creating A New Vision Of Legal Services Practice, Ingrid V. Eagly

Clinical Law Review

This Article attempts to bridge some of the gaps between theory about collaborative lawyering and the reality of everyday Legal Services practice by exploring the potential of community education to address the problems of poor clients. By using a case study of a community education program in Chicago, this Article demonstrates how this underutilized lawyering technique can be employed as a component of Legal Services practice. It is an especially opportune time to examine community education as a strategy because it is one of the few activities that Legal Services lawyers are still able to conduct, aside from individual client …

Preparing Students For The Profession: Clinical Education, Collaborative Pedagogy, And The Realities Of Practice For The New Lawyer, Catherine Gage O'Grady Jan 1998

Preparing Students For The Profession: Clinical Education, Collaborative Pedagogy, And The Realities Of Practice For The New Lawyer, Catherine Gage O'Grady

Clinical Law Review

Legal education is currently taking tentative steps beyond teaching lawyering skills toward a focus on professional collaborative relationships and human interactions. To this end, many legal educators have embraced a pedagogy that values student collaboration. Clinical education in particular has been praised for providing students with numerous opportunities to work collaboratively, and clinical educators have generally recognized the benefits of collaborative pedagogy to prepare students for the practice of law. Few educators, however, have asked whether collaborative pedagogy in a law school clinic adequately prepares students to face the power differentials and conformance pressures that do not exist in most …

Access To Justice, Academic Freedom, And Political Interference: A Clinical Program Under Siege, Peter A. Joy, Charles D. Weisselberg Jan 1998

Access To Justice, Academic Freedom, And Political Interference: A Clinical Program Under Siege, Peter A. Joy, Charles D. Weisselberg

Clinical Law Review

Attacks on poor people's access to justice and on the academic freedom of students and teachers are not new. Perhaps it is only inevitable that as "real-client" law school clinical programs proliferate, these programs will sometimes become the target of politicians and others who disagree with the clinics' work. Many of us who teach in clinical programs have received inquiries from people outside of the law school community, such as alumni, legislators, or trustees, who ask why "the law school" is involved in a particular case. Most of these inquiries are benign, and alumni, legislators, and trustees are satisfied once …

Clinical Law Review

The Association of American Law Schools (AALS) is a nonprofit educational organization that has as its purpose "the improvement of the legal profession through legal education." The AALS was formed in 1900, under the auspices of the American Bar Association (ABA). The AALS is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as the national accrediting agency for law schools. AALS members are required to meet standards of accreditation promulgated by the Association. Of the 181 ABA-approved law schools in this country, 160 have met these standards and have become members of the AALS. The AALS serves the legal community …

Differentiation Of Instructional Methodologies In Subject-Based Curricula At The Secondary Level, Edward Hootstein Jan 1998

Differentiation Of Instructional Methodologies In Subject-Based Curricula At The Secondary Level, Edward Hootstein

MERC Publications

Currently, efforts to detrack secondary schools have called attention to the need for instructional practices to address the increase academic diversity within many classrooms. The purpose of this student was to examine how teachers address that diversity and what steps they take to meet students' instructional needs. The purpose of the study was brought into focus by posing the following research questions: How important is addressing students' diverse academic needs to secondary school teachers? (b) Which instructional methods do secondary school teachers use to address students' academic differences? (c) which instructional methods do secondary school teachers think are effective in …

Enhancing Parental Involvement In Urban Schools: Types Of Programs, Characteristics Of Successful Programs, And Proven Strategies, Suzanne Trevett, James H. Mcmillan Jan 1998

Enhancing Parental Involvement In Urban Schools: Types Of Programs, Characteristics Of Successful Programs, And Proven Strategies, Suzanne Trevett, James H. Mcmillan

MERC Publications

Numerous students and reports document the fact that parental involvement in education is positively related to higher student achievement. A review of the literature also reveals that educators regard parental involvement in a variety of ways, ranging from a traditional concept of inviting parents to back-to-school night, to more participatory efforts such as parental membership on decision-making committees and executive councils. Studies also show that parental involvement relates to enhanced community satisfaction with education and to better physical facilities. None of these is an inconsequential or isolated factor; each impinges the other, and taken together they constitute major challenges facing …

Imaging Tissue Conductivity Via Contactless Measurements: A Feasibility Study, Nevzat G. Gençer, M. Nejat Tek Jan 1998

Imaging Tissue Conductivity Via Contactless Measurements: A Feasibility Study, Nevzat G. Gençer, M. Nejat Tek

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The feasibility of a new imaging system is investigated. This system will be used to image electrical conductivity distribution of biological tissues via contactless measurements. This will be achieved by introducing currents in the conductive medium using time-varying magnetic fields and measuring the magnetic fields of the induced currents. Consequently, the imaging system consists of transmitter and receiver coils placed nearby the conductive body. In this study, the basic features of the coplanar and coaxial coils are studied. The validity of the simplifying assumptions for the governing field equations is investigated. It is found that, for operating frequency of 100 …

Agricultural Water Quality Index Field Handout, Jeffrey Cooper, Richard Rediske, Melvin Northup, Mark Thogerson, Jonathan Van Denend Jan 1998

Agricultural Water Quality Index Field Handout, Jeffrey Cooper, Richard Rediske, Melvin Northup, Mark Thogerson, Jonathan Van Denend

Scientific Technical Reports

The Agricultural Water Quality Index (AWQI) is an assessment tool designed for use in agroecosystems. Most existing environmental indices and assessment tools focus on the stream channel and/or riparian zone (the area between the channel and active land use). In contrast, the AWQI places an emphasis on land use and soil types that play a significant role in hydrologic cycles and water quality characteristics within the watershed.

The AWQI is designed to be used by agricultural technicians with limited experience in aquatic ecology; however, it does assume a reasonable background in soil characteristics. This index is intended for use during …

The End Of Secrecy, Ann Florini Jan 1998

The End Of Secrecy, Ann Florini

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Two standards of behavior are slugging it out around the world. Advocates of well-established norms such as corporate privacy and national sovereignty want to hide information from prying eyes, while promoters of transparency tout it as the solution to everything from international financial crises to arms races and street crime. Just what is transparency? Put simply, transparency is the opposite of secrecy. Secrecy means deliberately hiding your actions; transparency means deliberately revealing them. This element of volition makes the growing acceptance of transparency much more than a resigned surrender to the technologically facilitated intrusiveness of the Information Age. Transparency is …

Comparing The Discourse Of Popular Politics In Korea And China: From Civil Society To Social Movements, William A. Callahan Jan 1998

Comparing The Discourse Of Popular Politics In Korea And China: From Civil Society To Social Movements, William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The Korea Journal’s series of articles addressing the question of civil society are a timely addition to the struggle over the discourse of democracy which is common to many countries in Pacific Asia. Since Professor Han Sang-Jin’s article does an excellent job of critically summarizing Chung Chulhee, Cho Hein and David Steinberg’s arti cles on Korean civil society, it seems that there is not much more to be said on the topic. To add to this discussion I will try to expand the discourse geographically and conceptually. Geographically, I will compare the discourse of popular politics in Korea with that …
