Investigating Calcium Oxychloride Deterioration In Concrete: Analyzing Variation In Laboratory Testing Procedures, Standardized Testing Protocols, And Industry Implementation., Joey Roy Parker

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Abstract Access to sustainable infrastructure is critical for society. In the U.S., over $350 billion is spent annually to maintain roadways providing access to education, medical care, and citizen consumer needs. Maintaining service of these systems during severe winter weather events is a significant challenge for maintenance personnel across the country. The use of deicing/anti-icing materials to lower the freezing temperature is a popular mitigation technique used to provide reasonable driving conditions during these times. The combination of these materials, freeze/thaw cycles, and precipitation produce perpetual deterioration and corrosion within reinforced concrete pavements and bridges. In the U.S., over 60% …

Stakeholder Perspective-Taking In Engineering Design: A Neurocognitive Approach, Megan C. Taylor May 2026

Stakeholder Perspective-Taking In Engineering Design: A Neurocognitive Approach, Megan C. Taylor

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Stakeholder engagement is a critically important yet overlooked phase of engineering design. While addressing stakeholders is known to lead to more thoughtful design outcomes, little work has been done regarding how stakeholder personas influence brain activity while designing. This study asks if the introduction of stakeholder personas- short overviews of people affected by a design problem- affects brain activation in undergraduate students during three design tasks: stakeholder identification, stakeholder needs generation, and stakeholder needs prioritization. To test this, 18 undergraduate mechanical engineering students were given a stormwater management design vignette; one group was given four stakeholder personas, while the control …

Brightly Slacked Tight, It Sways, Molly Brooke Martin May 2026

Brightly Slacked Tight, It Sways, Molly Brooke Martin

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Brightly Slacked Tight, It Sways is a body of work that investigates unpredictability and process-based making through collage and materially hybrid forms that combine natural and synthetic elements, operating between drawing, painting, and sculpture. Using familiar, readily available materials gathered from the studio, hardware store, and my surrounding environment, the work embraces improvisation as a generative force. Unpredictability keeps me in relation to the work, interrupting certainty, requiring responsiveness, and mirroring the shifting conditions of the natural world. I break, cut, and recombine sticks gathered from my yard and athletic tape from gymnastics, along with scrap drawings and paintings. Shaped …

The Noise Of Time...., Shannon P. Smith May 2026

The Noise Of Time...., Shannon P. Smith

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

"the noise of time…" is a meditation on home, memory, and the fluidity of time, told through image and sculpture (materiality). Rooted in the complexity of Black identity and ignited by the passing of my father, this work began as a challenge: to create something interior and vulnerable, specific to my experience yet open enough for others to hold. Influenced by Gaston Bachelard’s "The Poetics of Space," I consider home—our personal intimate space—not only as a container for objects, but as a sanctuary for dreams, remembrance, and complicated emotions. I observe the home as a structure that holds what cannot …

Fisheries Management Paper No. 313: Western Australian Statewide Small Pelagic Scalefish Resource Harvest Strategy, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia

Fisheries Management Papers

Harvest strategies for Western Australia’s (WA) aquatic resources are formal documents developed by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD, the Department) to support decision-making processes that ensure the outcomes are consistent with the principles of Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD; Fletcher 2002a) and Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management (EBFM; Fletcher et al. 2012).

Harvest strategies are a key component of all contemporary fishery management systems and a requirement for certification under the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC; Marine Stewardship Council 2018). The objectives of ESD are reflected in the objects of the Fish Resources Management Act 1994 (FRMA).

This Statewide …

An Exploratory Study On Perceptions Of Climate Change And Mental Health Among Alaskans, Emily Miranda Cohen May 2026

An Exploratory Study On Perceptions Of Climate Change And Mental Health Among Alaskans, Emily Miranda Cohen

Theses and Dissertations

Climate change is a pressing global issue with diverse mental health impacts. However, the relationship between climate change perceptions and mental health remains poorly explored. Rapid climate change in Alaska makes it an ideal setting to explore these relationships. Thus, 204 Alaskan adults were surveyed to assess their perceptions of climate change and explore the relationships between climate change perceptions, exposure to adverse climate impacts, and psychological distress (i.e., symptoms of depression, anxiety, and climate-related post-traumatic stress). Results suggest that participants agree that climate change is real, human-caused, negative, and impacts areas both close to and far from where they …

Social Reading And #Booktok: Exploring Emotion, Community, And Book Promotion On Tiktok, Courtney B. Thompson May 2026

Social Reading And #Booktok: Exploring Emotion, Community, And Book Promotion On Tiktok, Courtney B. Thompson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines how BookTok, a subcommunity centered on reading, functions as a social and emotional domain that shapes contemporary reading culture. Discourse analysis of the most popular videos within the BookTok subspace revealed commonalities in how creators expressed their emotions through text, language, and audio. Patterns of emotional devastation were also present in the discourse, pointing to affective-discursive practices circulating the community. Moreover, a content analysis of the books being promoted across highly engaged BookTok videos uncovered significant themes of romance and an appreciation for modern fiction novels.

Findings suggest that reading functions as a social experience that is …

Three Essays On Veterinary Drug Maximum Residue Limits, Akinbode Okunola May 2026

Three Essays On Veterinary Drug Maximum Residue Limits, Akinbode Okunola

Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation consists of three essays: the first examines the prevalence of veterinary drug maximum residue limits (MRLs), the regulatory behavior of countries in setting these MRLs, and the degree of country-level compliance with international standards of Codex Alimentarius (Codex). The second evaluates the extent to which compliance with international standards across countries can help to manage potential transmission of resistant bacterial from animals to humans through consumption of contaminated meat, dairy and aquaculture products. The third focuses on how differences in regulatory standards across countries can impact international trade in the global beef, pork, and poultry markets.

The first …

Slowing Down, Caring Deeply, Trusting Children: An Ethnographic Study Of Forest School Practice, Steph N. Dean, Amanda Gladys, Julianne A. Wenner

Publications

Forest School is an experiential, nature-based educational approach that often evolves as it takes root in new cultural and ecological settings. This ethnographic study explores how one Forest School in the Southeast United States interprets and enacts the Forest School model within its local context. Drawing on participant observations, interviews, field notes, and photography, we examine the lived experiences of the Forest School community to understand how cultural practices shape daily life at the school. Three central themes emerged: (1) slowing down to deepen learning and connections, (2) supporting the whole child through individualized care, and (3) trusting students with …

Tropical Hardware, Shane Chase May 2026

Tropical Hardware, Shane Chase

Student Theses

A collection of poetry.

Preface: In the spring of 2022 I lived in Bethnal Green, a once working-class neighborhood in East London. I grew attached to the area as it gave me a life I couldn’t have back in Florida. Everything needed to subsist was contained within walking distance. My connection to the place grew strong each time I walked through Middleton Green or passed Keeling House rising up out of the fog as I made my way to work. Gradually, I developed a sense of isolation, smelling the salt from the gulf, an ocean that wasn’t there. The threat …

Scenic Design: Ariadne Auf Naxos, Riley Lathrom May 2026

Scenic Design: Ariadne Auf Naxos, Riley Lathrom

Student Theses

riadne auf Naxos was made in collaboration between librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal and composer Richard Strauss between 1911 and 1916. While it was not the first or last project the pair would do together, it was one that dared to reinvent the form of early 20th-century German opera. Both artists understood that, in order to evolve with the modern world, their art form needed to reflect the changing culture around them. Hofmannstal envisioned “a totally unified creation of the contributing art forms, harmoniously and inseparably blended into a superior vehicle of expression” (Davidsen et al.) I find this mindset one …

Fascism Usa: Class And Identity Politics In The Age Of Trump, Marc Edelman May 2026

Fascism Usa: Class And Identity Politics In The Age Of Trump, Marc Edelman

Publications and Research

This essay argues that Trump’s triumph in the 2024 presidential contest represents the consolidation of an oligarchical authoritarian project, backed by a multi-class and (surprisingly, for some) multi-racial electorate. It brought intensified state and freelance attacks on immigrants, labor unions, women, LGBTQ+ people, journalists, civil servants, assorted “political enemies,” and other groups that the MAGA movement targets. It is institutionalizing authoritarian governance structures in ways that will be exceedingly difficult to undo. The paper first addresses the experience of growing up in the shadow of fascism. It analyzes various sectors that supported Trump and the impacts of inflation, incumbency, economic …

The Queer South, Brylan Cole May 2026

The Queer South, Brylan Cole

School of Art Undergraduate Honors Theses

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer people in the Southern United States are systematically and culturally made invisible, both in historical and contemporary contexts. I founded The Queer South magazine alongside Reid Pinckard, organized the exhibition Prioritizing Pleasure in the Queer South, and created a body of work to amplify LGBTQ+ Southern voices. Through community organizing, writing, and the making of objects, my practice provides representation to an underserved and overlooked community in the region I call home.

Self-Fashioning In Contemporary Figurative Painting, Hal Hardin May 2026

Self-Fashioning In Contemporary Figurative Painting, Hal Hardin

School of Art Undergraduate Honors Theses

This paper positions my painting practice as a form of resistance to historical constructions of gender, identity, and visibility, shaped by my experience as a queer, nonbinary person navigating womanhood in the American South. Drawing on Stephen Greenblatt’s concept of self-fashioning and Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity, I argue that Western figurative painting has long disciplined the feminine body, exploiting it and commodifying it into an easily consumable object.

In response, I appropriate and distort these visual conventions. My figures refuse to behave: they stretch, slouch, and linger in ambiguity, resisting fixed interpretation. Placed in spaces of visibility and …

A Modern Cabinet Of Curiosities: Patronage, Narrative, And The Foundations Of American Art At Crystal Bridges Museum Of American Art, Amelia Quinlen May 2026

A Modern Cabinet Of Curiosities: Patronage, Narrative, And The Foundations Of American Art At Crystal Bridges Museum Of American Art, Amelia Quinlen

School of Art Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines the 2025 reinstallation of the “Foundations of American Art” galleries at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas as a case study through which to analyze how museum narratives are constructed, negotiated, and presented in the twenty-first century. Drawing on the historiography of museum display, from early modern cabinets of curiosity to nineteenth-century salon-style exhibitions, it argues that galleries function not as neutral containers for objects, but as interpretive frameworks shaped by curatorial decisions, spatial organization, and institutional context. While the reinstallation positions itself as a reconsideration of the “foundations” of American art through thematic …

Increasing Awareness Of Compassion Fatigue, Stress, And Burnout In A Helping Profession, Lyndsey L. Lacey May 2026

Increasing Awareness Of Compassion Fatigue, Stress, And Burnout In A Helping Profession, Lyndsey L. Lacey

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Many people in helping professions may be unaware of how to manage the stressors that come with helping others. When people in helping professions do not manage stress well, they may experience compassion fatigue or burnout, which can lead to worsened job performance and depression. When people in these professions learn about managing stress and avoiding compassion fatigue and burnout, they may be more effective at their job, improve the quality of care the client receives, and support their colleagues. In order to address this issue, I created a one-day stress management workshop for behavioral technicians at Breakthrough Behavior in …

Increasing Preschool Students' Awareness Of The Importance Of Good Hygiene, Hannah Valerie Verhoek May 2026

Increasing Preschool Students' Awareness Of The Importance Of Good Hygiene, Hannah Valerie Verhoek

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Many preschoolers have not yet developed the skills necessary for maintaining basic hygiene. Without the early introduction of hygiene skills, preschoolers may not maintain personal cleanliness, thereby increasing their risk of contracting an illness. When young children learn about the importance of good hygiene, they can create healthy routines, such as washing hands, brushing teeth, and practicing sanitation practices to keep germs away.  To increase their hygiene skills, I created a one-day lesson for the preschool students, located in the Early Development program on the California State University of Monterey Bay campus.

Prospects And Challenges Of Parental Involvement In Literacy Development In Children, Anela Mendoza May 2026

Prospects And Challenges Of Parental Involvement In Literacy Development In Children, Anela Mendoza

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Parental involvement in children’s literacy development has long been considered a pivotal component in increasing student literacy skills and benefiting the overall achievement of students. However, many parents face challenges in participating in their children’s literacy education, as evidenced by studies showing a decrease in parental involvement in at-home literacy activities in recent years. This senior capstone research project examines the prospects and challenges of parental involvement in literacy development through a literature review and a study conducted through anonymous parent and teacher surveys. The findings reveal that parental involvement in literacy development positively affects their children’s academic and social …

Using Online And Traditional Tools To Assess K-5 Homework Assignments, Annika M. Altman May 2026

Using Online And Traditional Tools To Assess K-5 Homework Assignments, Annika M. Altman

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Online school work is becoming more common with every passing academic year. Since the pandemic, there has been a major shift to online homework for elementary school students that has yet to go back to traditional paper and pen homework. The purpose of this capstone paper is to examine the ways that online homework has shifted since the schools returned from lockdown to face-to-face classroom. Through the use of literature review, interviews with 3 teachers, anonymous surveys for parents, teachers, and  students, the results indicated both parents and teachers share the responsibility to ensure that students complete homework, whether online …

Effects Of Censorship On Literature Books In Public Schools For K-8 Students, Sasha Mills May 2026

Effects Of Censorship On Literature Books In Public Schools For K-8 Students, Sasha Mills

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Censorship of diverse literature has been on the rise outside California, particularly in public schools in states like Florida and Texas. In response, this senior capstone research examines the effects of this censorship on students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Drawing from a literature review and ethnographic interviews with two school board members and teachers, the results indicate that censorship of diverse literature negatively impacts K-8 students by reducing their opportunities to learn about diversity and multiple perspectives. Recognizing these effects prompts a closer investigation into the mechanisms and motivations behind the censorship of such books. State laws most often …

From Classroom To Courtroom: Understanding Real Pathways Into Legal Careers, Timothy S. Troxel May 2026

From Classroom To Courtroom: Understanding Real Pathways Into Legal Careers, Timothy S. Troxel

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

This study examines how legal professionals describe their preparation for legal and law-adjacent careers, with the goal of identifying practical guidance for college students entering the field. Existing literature on legal career preparation often emphasizes measurable qualifications, while offering broad or generalized advice. At the same time, research on career development highlights the importance of experiential learning and mentorship, suggesting a gap between formal guidance and lived experience. To explore this gap, this study conducted interviews with ten legal professionals across a range of roles and experience levels. Participants were asked about their backgrounds, career paths, skill development, and other …

The Role Of Perceived Perpetrator Centrality In Intentions To Express Or Confront Sexist Behaviors, Anna G. Miller May 2026

The Role Of Perceived Perpetrator Centrality In Intentions To Express Or Confront Sexist Behaviors, Anna G. Miller

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

Confronting sexist acts (e.g., by saying, “That was sexist!”) has been empirically shown to reduce others’ sexist behaviors. However, bystanders are often reluctant to confront sexist acts, particularly when perpetrators of sexism are perceived as high in status. Prior studies have operationalized status in terms of organizational rank. However, individuals may also have status by virtue of their connections to other group members, which I investigate in the present study. Participants with full-time work experience (N = 451) were asked to read a vignette describing a sexist incident in which a male perpetrator of sexism had many (vs. few) …

Post-Quantum Cryptography Encryption Implementation For Messaging App, Callum S. Ward May 2026

Post-Quantum Cryptography Encryption Implementation For Messaging App, Callum S. Ward

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

This paper and complementary capstone project aim to explore the state of post-quantum cryptography today by defining the algorithms with which quantum computers can decipher modern asymmetric cryptographic algorithms in exponentially accelerated time, exploring national standards body NIST’s recommendations to circumvent these weaknesses with post-quantum solutions, and implementing recommended algorithms in my group’s project for the UNO Computer Science Capstone course, LockTalk. After having decided on ML-KEM for quantum-resistant asymmetric key transfer and AES-256 for symmetric message encryption and decryption, I was able to cryptographically encode messages to obscure their plaintext values from communication interceptions without any discernible increase in …
