Juries Under Siege., Phil Hardberger Jan 1998

Juries Under Siege., Phil Hardberger

St. Mary's Law Journal

Beginning in the late 1980s, the Texas Supreme Court saw a slew of conservative judges elected to the bench. With this new Court, previous expansions of the law were stopped. Jury verdicts became highly suspect and were frequently overturned for a variety of reasons. Damages too did not go unnoticed. Juries’ assessments were wiped out by increasingly harsher standards. The ripple effect of the Court’s conservative philosophy on the judicial process was substantial. Jury verdicts, few as they may be, are not subject to harsh scrutiny by conscientious appellate judges sworn to follow the Texas Supreme Court’s precedent. And the …

Corporate Governance, Philippine Style: Who Controls The Ball?, Michael John Sullivan, Angelo Unite Jan 1998

Corporate Governance, Philippine Style: Who Controls The Ball?, Michael John Sullivan, Angelo Unite

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The intent of this research is to investigate and analyze the corporate governance system of an emerging market economy and determine whether the Anglo-ll.merican or Japanese-German form, or some alternative form has evolved. The particular country analyzed is the Philippines. The Philippines has many similarities with its emerging Southeast Asian neighbors due to proximity, and some differences, as well, due to its unique history and culture. First, we describe each of these corporate governance models (see Megginson 1997 for a detailed description). Then we discuss which of these alternative models best describes the Philippine economy. We conclude by discussing the …

Purchasing Power Parity: An Application Of Cointegration Analysis, Victor Pontines Jan 1998

Purchasing Power Parity: An Application Of Cointegration Analysis, Victor Pontines

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Since many economic variables are non-stationary, a heavy burden is imposed among researchers to determine the stationarity of their data. One price to pay in using non-stationary data is that the conventional student t-test and F-distribution break down and become invalid. But the most serious problem faced when using non-stationary data, is the spurious regression problem. If at least one of the explanatory variables in a regression equation is non-stationary, it is very likely that the dependent variable in the equation will display a similar trend. When both dependent variable and regressor(s) in an equation are trend-dominated, we are likely …

Strategic Planning In The Philippine Advertising Agency Business: A Practice, A Trend, Or A Dream?, Leonardo R. Garcia Jr. Jan 1998

Strategic Planning In The Philippine Advertising Agency Business: A Practice, A Trend, Or A Dream?, Leonardo R. Garcia Jr.

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Effective advertising campaigns are based on a systematic and detailed analysis of product, market, media, and consumer information. Advertisers and their agencies conduct a considerable amount of in-house research, especially personal and focused group interviews, to understand consumers' motivation and decision processes. This philosophy of scanning the environment, conducting research, and obtaining consumer insights in the development of an advertising campaign is essentially known as strategic planning (Gatignon and Burke, 1991).

Effects Of Supervisory Control On Salesperson Behavior, Rustica D. Badillo Jan 1998

Effects Of Supervisory Control On Salesperson Behavior, Rustica D. Badillo

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The supervisor is a key person in any organization because his job embraces the difficulties of management in controlling the organization. His primary responsibility is the accomplishment of the organization's goals and objectives — getting things done — with and through people. Over the years, his work has undergone changes and is still undergoing developments, depending upon the demands of the times. In its desire for continuous improvement, management searches for new and better ways of running the organization. Every change initiated by management should reach the lowest level of the organization and it is the supervisor who initiates and …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

There is no escaping the mentality--or the burden--of e pluribus unum, writes EDWARD M. GRIFFIN, whether there is a oneness or a plural character to being an American or another notion entirely of what kind of people our multicultural backgrounds have fashioned. Whether national policy or educational philosophy, this concept, these concepts, must be confronted. Professor of English at the University of Minnesota, Griffin has written widely on such colonial figures as Jonathan Edwards and Charles Chauncy, and he has recently turned his attention to the American poet/playwrights Robert Lowell and William Alfred.

JESSICA B. TEISCH examines the story …

Controlled Drug Delivery From A Novel Injectable In Situ Formed Biodegradable Plga Microsphere System, Rajeev Jain Jan 1998

Controlled Drug Delivery From A Novel Injectable In Situ Formed Biodegradable Plga Microsphere System, Rajeev Jain

Open Access Dissertations

A novel method for in situ preparation of injectable biodegradable microspheres from the copolymer poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) without incorporating unacceptable organic solvents is described. The delivery system is a dispersion of PLGA microglobules ("premicrospheres" or "embryonic microspheres") in an acceptable vehicle mixture (continuous phase) and whose integrity is maintained by use of appropriate stabilizers. A solution of PLGA. triacetin, drug, PEG 400, and Tween 80 (Oil Phase 1) are added dropwise with continuous homogenization to miglyol 812-Span 80 solution (Oil Phase 2), thereby inducing phase separation (coacervation) of PLGA and forming PLGA microglobules (containing the drug) dispersed in the …
