Analyzing The Evolution Of Science: Topological Cycles And Community Detection In Knowledge Networks, Frances C. Mcconnell May 2026

Analyzing The Evolution Of Science: Topological Cycles And Community Detection In Knowledge Networks, Frances C. Mcconnell

Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Honors Projects

How scientific knowledge grows and organizes itself is a central question in the study of science. This thesis uses tools from topology and network science to detect and characterize knowledge gaps—places in a field’s literature where related concepts do not co-occur. We develop a metric to quantify the degree of interdisciplinarity of each gap, using the community structure of the underlying network as a proxy for subfields. Across a wide range of fields, gaps reliably span multiple subfields and evolve in recognizable temporal patterns, highlighting new insights into how scientific fields are structured and their stage of development.

Understanding Delays In Emergency Department Care: A National Analysis Of Wait Times, Gregory Forsberg

Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Honors Projects

Emergency department (ED) wait times remain a persistent bottleneck in the United States healthcare system, impacting patient outcomes, hospital efficiency, and equitable access to care. This study analyzes nationally representative data from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS), a complex, multi-stage probability sample. Using survey-weighted analyses and predictive modeling, we examine the effects of patient characteristics, triage acuity, and visit timing. Results indicate that operational and system-level factors, including hospital capacity, geographic region, and temporal variation, are among the most influential predictors of ED wait times

Dor-E: Final Design Report, Arav Singh, August Hogen-Esch, Bruce Le, Patrick Mcgee, Spencer Major

Mechanical Engineering

I. PROBLEM STATEMENT

The Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary contains a diverse array of benthic habitats that remain largely undocumented due to the financial and logistical barriers of deep-sea exploration. Traditional high-end autonomous underwater vehicles and remotely operated vehicles capable of reaching 1000-meter depths require significant surface support infrastructure and hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding. Furthermore, navigating protected ecological zones demands strict adherence to "Leave No Trace" principles. Conventional benthic landers and submersibles routinely leave metallic debris behind; many submersibles use galvanic timed releases that corrode in seawater over a set period of time or heat-activated bolts to …

The Making Of Shi'a Resistance In Afghanistan: Historical Roots, Communist Rule, And Soviet Occupation, 1978–1989, Sayed Sajjad Hojet May 2026

The Making Of Shi'a Resistance In Afghanistan: Historical Roots, Communist Rule, And Soviet Occupation, 1978–1989, Sayed Sajjad Hojet

Theses

This thesis examines Shi'a political mobilization in Afghanistan from the 1978 Saur Revolution through the Soviet occupation, ending in 1989. It argues that Shi'a resistance was not simply a religious reaction to Marxist rule but a complex movement shaped by long-term marginalization, influenced by rival political ideas, and connected to cross-border networks in Iran. It traces how persecution under Amir Abdurrahman Khan created a system of political exclusion that shaped Shi'a collective identity before the communist takeover, and how ideologies such Marxism and Political Islam further politicized Shi'a youth in the mid-twentieth century. The PDPA's coercive policies after 1978 helped …

Avoiding White Elephants: An Empirical Assessment On The Failure Of Airport Capacity To Drive Tourism Receipts, Somanithel Kheang May 2026

Avoiding White Elephants: An Empirical Assessment On The Failure Of Airport Capacity To Drive Tourism Receipts, Somanithel Kheang

Theses

This study investigates the relationship between airport infrastructure capacity and international tourism receipts across 12 major Asian and European economies from 2000 to 2019. Using a Panel Fixed Effects framework, the analysis tests the "Supply-Led Growth" hypothesis to determine if physical infrastructure expansion independently drives tourism revenue. To address potential endogeneity and reverse causality, the study employs specification where all independent variables are lagged by one year. The empirical results yield a robust null finding: airport capacity does not exhibit a statistically significant impact on tourism receipts. Conversely, government consumption is identified as a potent driver of tourism performance, with a …

Resurrecting The Lost City Of Kaskaskia: An Archival, Gis, And Archaeological Investigation Of Illinois’ First Capital, Rebecca Ramey

Theses

This thesis centers around the question of how much remains of historical Kaskaskia, Illinois in the archaeological context, and examines the common historical narrative and its lack of inclusion of non-white voices. Kaskaskia was a vibrant, diasporic community that shaped the founding of Illinois. Through archival research, ArcGIS, geophysical surveys, and an archaeological investigation, this thesis proves that it is possible to bring those voices back through the archaeological record. Kaskaskia has long been ignored by the broader research community, and this thesis aims to show just how much potential Kaskaskia has at contributing to our understanding of the founding …

Development Of Chemical Reaction Airbag Safety System For Multi-Rotor Uav To Mitigate Free-Fall Collision Impact, Brady Kent Villiger

Theses

With Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) becoming more advanced, the demand of companies that plan to use them for commercial use has only increased. Amazon plans to use UAVs for shipping purposes, Esri uses UAVs for surveying purposes, and many government organizations use UAVs for search and rescue, infrastructure inspection, and power line inspection. With all these uses, UAV safety becomes a major concern. If a UAV were to fail mid-flight there would be an issue if it collided with a person or an expensive piece of equipment after a free-fall. In this paper, the proposed safety system would be a …

On The Parametrization Of Self-Adjoint Extensions Of Singular Sturm-Liouville Operators, Caleb Beckler May 2026

On The Parametrization Of Self-Adjoint Extensions Of Singular Sturm-Liouville Operators, Caleb Beckler

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The self-adjoint extensions of a lower semi-bounded minimal Sturm–Liouville operator are parametrized using generalized boundary values defined by fixed choices of special nonoscillatory solutions, called principal and nonprincipal solutions. However, principal and nonprincipal solutions are not unique, and different choices yield different generalized boundary values. Therefore, the parametrization of self-adjoint extensions inherently depends upon the choices of principal and nonprincipal solutions. Using known properties of principal and nonprincipal solutions, Wronskian techniques, and the Pl¨ucker identity, we find the relation between self-adjoint extensions for two different parametrizations.

The Nature Of Violence: Exploring How Community And Incident Characteristics Influence The Likelihood That Gun Crimes Become Multi-Victim Events, Kathleen Hillman

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Gun crime continues to represent a substantial threat to public safety in the United States. Firearms are disproportionately involved in most crimes of violence, particularly murder (Collins et al., 2017; Cook & Pollack, 2017; Goldsmith et al., 2022; Johnson et al., 2021), and firearm-related offending is more pronounced in the U.S. than any other industrialized nation (Carson et al., 2022). A large body of literature has examined the extent to which characteristics of communities, place, victims, and offenders contribute to the likelihood and frequency of gun violence. Yet the vast majority of these works have restricted their analyses to single-offender, …
