Neighborhood Councils: A Family-Driven Approach To Community Change, Merlinda Raquel Gallegos

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Following times of social upheavals, especially when social tensions exist in ethnically diverse and lower class neighborhoods, the U.S. government has provided increased aid to the poor, and new community-based initiatives have emerged. This dissertation focuses on Nevada's neighborhood-based, community-driven, collaborative approach to providing services in low-income areas: Family Resource Centers. The purpose of this exploratory study is to develop strategies which will increase community participation in Nevada's Family Resource Centers' neighborhood councils; After two years of participant observation and the use of focus groups in four neighborhood councils, seven dimensions emerged concerning strategies to increase voluntary participation in neighborhood …

Special Education Students: Which Ones Are Prepared To Receive A High School Diploma?, Rhoton Titus Hudson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study sought to determine whether statistically significant differences between students with disabilities who pass and those who fail the Nevada High School Proficiency Examination are accounted for by demographic variables alone, or if they can also be attributed to educational variables. To establish the basis for this study, legislation such as IDEA and Goals 2000 was examined, recent literature was reviewed, and court cases involving testing students with disabilities on standardized and minimum competency tests were studied; The study follows 965 students with disabilities who were in the eleventh grade during the 1998--99 school year through five administrations of …

The Effectiveness Of Traditional Instructional Methods In An Online Learning Environment, Steven Bradford Smith Jan 1998

The Effectiveness Of Traditional Instructional Methods In An Online Learning Environment, Steven Bradford Smith

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

For more than a century, the most predominant form of instruction in higher education has been classroom-based and instructor-led. Today, this traditional approach to learning is being challenged by new technologies such as multimedia, telecommunications, and the Internet. It has been suggested that the effectiveness of traditional pedagogical methods in alternative learning environments may be resolved through the creation of a new domain for educational interaction referred to as online education (Harasim, 1990); There has been much research focused on the advantages of teaching university courses online (Davis, Odell, Abbitt, Amos, 1999; Hiltz, 1994; Harasim, 1990). However, there is little …

Toward Effective And Ethical Drug Abuse Prevention Policies: The Case Against Indiscriminate Drug Testing, Robert Eugene Gladd Jan 1998

Toward Effective And Ethical Drug Abuse Prevention Policies: The Case Against Indiscriminate Drug Testing, Robert Eugene Gladd

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

For an increasing breadth of organizational domains, a negative illicit drug screen result has become the final and paramount criterion for admission and/or continuing participation. Such a policy is vigorously promoted to the private sector by government and vendors of testing services as an inexpensive and vital tool for suppressing drug abuse. This policy, however, can been shown to be at once empirically unwarranted, methodologically dubious, constitutionally impermissible, and ethically unsustainable. Reducing the harm attributable to illicit intoxication is a legitimate and worthy social goal. The ends, however, cannot justify such means of indiscriminate and intrusive surveillance.

Striptease: An Anthropological View, Angela Lee Ramsey Jan 1998

Striptease: An Anthropological View, Angela Lee Ramsey

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This following study serves as an attempt to apply theoretical questions to the phenomenon of striptease. I argue that striptease can be more fully understood as an act guided by the rules of performance. Strippers, and to a lesser extent the audience, can then be seen as actors employing a fantasy phase to sustain their respective roles within the charade of performance sex. Strippers and audiences are also players within the concept of performance itself, meaning they are simultaneously subject to and authors of the phenomenon. Using a biosocial approach, I explore the psychological, cultural, and physiological, etc., cues that …

A Comparison Of Elite Tennis Players' Motor Abilities With Those Of Elite Basketball, Soccer And Volleyball Players, Sarit Shalev

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The difference in certain motor abilities was tested among four different groups of athletes. Specifically, this study compared elite tennis players' reaction time (RT), movement time (MT) and agility (AG), to soccer, basketball and volleyball players' MT, RT and AG; Thirty-three subjects were tested in the Wingate laboratory and tennis court. The laboratory tests included 25 trials of foot RT and MT recordings for each subject. These tests were conducted on a highly sensitive metal plate (a force plate that detects sensitive movement, e.g., a foot lifted of the plate) attached to a computerized device that records the RT and …

Anorexia Nervosa: An Exploration Of Early- And Later-Onset, Jennifer Claire Duddy Jan 1998

Anorexia Nervosa: An Exploration Of Early- And Later-Onset, Jennifer Claire Duddy

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Children with anorexia nervosa have often been overlooked or misdiagnosed because of the lack of understanding and clarity surrounding early onset. This study was aimed to help clarify ambiguities by exploring the similarities and differences of early- and later-onset anorexia nervosa. Results from case studies of a female child, adolescent, and adult diagnosed with anorexia nervosa are presented. Findings from the case studies indicate several similarities between the two onsets such as comparable demographic characteristics, diagnostic features, symptoms of associated mental disorders, personality characteristics, and etiological factors. Findings also infer some differences that include variance in prognoses, severity of physical …

The Development Of A Job-Related Non-Discriminatory Physical Abilities Test For The Firefighters At The Nevada Test Site, Nickele A'Lise Miller

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A job-related, non-discriminatory Physical Abilities Test (PAT) was developed for the Nevada Test Site (NTS) firefighters. The PAT was developed through firefighter interviews and tabulated call responses between 1990 and 1995. The interviews and task history yielded a job analysis from which six routine, physically demanding tasks were identified and developed into a test battery. Eleven NTS firefighters tested the proposed PAT for reliability. Subjects were timed on the six tasks. The total time for completion, including the change from bunker gear to wildland gear, was also recorded. An Intra-class Reliability coefficient was calculated for each task and total time. …

Homogeneous Landscape: The American Motel As A Cultural Indicator, Troy Jay Elston Jan 1998

Homogeneous Landscape: The American Motel As A Cultural Indicator, Troy Jay Elston

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The following research is an exploration of the American chain motel as a cultural indicator. Through the lens of the homogenized chain motel, connections are made between the American consumer and a general awareness of the power of marketing architecture in the United States. The motel's evolution and meaning is further explained in terms of how the consumers' needs are identified, clarified, and satisfied within a commodity driven society. In the past 40 years the market's importance on the hospitality and housing industries have proven to be highly successful, as shown through the purchasing decisions of millions of Americans continuing …

Philosophical Foundations, Social Power And Social Work Practice, Timothy Duane Hamilton Jan 1998

Philosophical Foundations, Social Power And Social Work Practice, Timothy Duane Hamilton

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The contemporary philosophical landscape, which affects the fields of philosophical endeavor and the ways power is framed, is described. The covert manner these influences effect social work practice is made more visible through the use of ethically oriented decision making patterns; Ways that authority and discretion are used and abused, and abusive decision-making, are described making them easier to recognize and mitigate. Knowledge of current and potential ways that social power operates provides social workers tools in promoting the goals of empowerment and uncovering and enhancing clients' strengths; Finally, a public sphere within which a reflective social work practice could …

An Examination Of Conflict In Developing Relationships, Amy Elisabeth Wagner Jan 1998

An Examination Of Conflict In Developing Relationships, Amy Elisabeth Wagner

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Conflict is an unavoidable component of interpersonal relationships. The manner in which relational partners manage conflict is likely to change over the developmental course of the relationship. Additionally, the masculine or feminine attitudes an individual holds at the time of conflict impact the type of conflict strategy he or she will employ; A review of literature demonstrated a need for research in the area of gender communication and conflict. This thesis explored how conflict behaviors and degree of relational intimacy are mediated by masculine and feminine attitudes. Survey research was conducted to determine if males and females reported significantly different …

Teaching Methods And School Designs Of American Elementary Schools And How The Methods Are Reflected In The Schools' Designs, Merrill Eugene Kieffer Jan 1998

Teaching Methods And School Designs Of American Elementary Schools And How The Methods Are Reflected In The Schools' Designs, Merrill Eugene Kieffer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Most educators agree that effective learning is preceded by effective teaching and that the school facility should provide an environment in which the pursuit of knowledge can be promoted. This study was completed to understand that relationship between the built environment and education; The research presents a review of some of the prominent learning theories of the twentieth century along with common teaching methods and their relationships to learning theory. Following this review, common school designs are analyzed based on the overall environmental needs identified through the study of learning theory and educational practices. Furthermore, the microenvironment of the classroom …

Utilization Of Therapeutic Touch In Clients Diagnosed With Chronic Pain, Rosa Matonti Jan 1998

Utilization Of Therapeutic Touch In Clients Diagnosed With Chronic Pain, Rosa Matonti

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Chronic pain is one of the most pervasive and expensive health care problems in society today. Fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis are chronic disease states which currently have no cure. A common complaint among these patients is constant and unremitting pain, which often worsens with inactivity. At this time treatment for both disease processes is essentially palliative, supportive and aimed at symptom relief; A quasi experimental design was used to determine if there were any significant differences in pain perception between persons with FM or RA receiving therapeutic touch (TT) and a placebo treatment (PT). Sixty-one subjects served as their own …

Balance Of Power, Adjustment, And Violence Within Marital Relationships, Melissa Ann Franklin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Seventy-two married couples were categorized into husband-dominant, wife-dominant, and egalitarian groups based on each spouse's report of perceived level of influence relative to their partner. The mean levels of marital adjustment and marital violence were compared among the three groups. The hypotheses proposed that the power balance groups would differ in their reports of marital adjustment, marital violence, and marital stability. Questionnaires measured marital adjustment, levels of marital violence, and demographics. A follow-up was conducted in order to assess their marital stability. No hypotheses were confirmed. However results indicated that when wives reported themselves as dominant, they reported higher levels …

Redefining The Self In Postmodern Cyberspace, Roy Joseph Jan 1998

Redefining The Self In Postmodern Cyberspace, Roy Joseph

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Cyberspace is a metaphor for an alternative reality situated in the linear, physical world but yet capable of transcending it. The otherness of cyberspace manifests itself through virtual transient worlds, reconstituting the stable human subject in a radically interactive electronic medium. The study identifies three simple stages to demonstrate how cyberspace accomplishes the dispersion of the human subject: (i) role-playing which occurs in interactive games such as Multi-User Simulated Environments; (ii) the deconstruction of the boundaries between the autonomous author and the reader in hypertextual platforms and (iii) the deconstruction of the boundaries between the virtual and the real in …

The Adventures Of Gi Jane: Women In The Military, Jennifer Amy Schneider Jan 1998

The Adventures Of Gi Jane: Women In The Military, Jennifer Amy Schneider

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Many women in the United States are living in a paradox. While changes in the American culture have led to significant improvements in women's lives, they still are frequently exposed to discriminatory policies and actions. This study examines the United States military, which is a specific institution that embodies this paradox. While the military offers women certain opportunities, such as a college education, travel and adventure, it is still steeped in male domination and gender discrimination. Using a review of secondary sources, this study explores the discourses relating to power, gender and sexuality in the military, which form the basis …

The Relationship Between Travel And Won/Loss Records And Performance Measures In Major League Baseball, Tracey Lynn Elikan Jan 1998

The Relationship Between Travel And Won/Loss Records And Performance Measures In Major League Baseball, Tracey Lynn Elikan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A home advantage in sports has been well documented. However, little research has been conducted to determine exactly why this home advantage exists. This study will attempt to examine the relationship between travel (i.e. number of miles traveled, number of time zones crossed, direction of travel, and game number at home or on the road) and the performance of professional baseball teams (i.e. won/loss, runs scored, hits, errors committed, double plays executed, and runs allowed). Stepwise multiple regression analyses will be used to determine the amount of explained variance in each performance variable attributable to the effects of the travel …

Pawns Of Fate: Chinese/Paiute Intercultural Marriages, 1860-1920, Walker River Reservation, Schurz, Nevada, Ruth Kretzler Billhimer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis focuses on "intercultural" marriages between Chinese immigrant men and Northern Paiute women who lived on or around the Walker River Reservation between 1860 and 1920, the years in which census manuscript records have been made public. Because of federal, state, and local laws, Chinese men sometimes sought marriage partners among Native American women because these relationships were not banned by law. Based upon federal, state, and local archives, census data, and oral interviews of descendants of Northern Paiute and Chinese "marriages," some insight into the reasons for these marriages have been ascertained from the perspective of descendants presently …

The Symbionese Liberation Army Movement: An Historical, Theoretical, And Rhetorical Analysis, Crystal Joy Cox

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

To understand the social movement of the Symbionese Liberation Army, one must examine the history, theories, and rhetoric of the organization. The extremist foundation of the Symbionese Liberation Army is directly reflected in the organizations communiques, inner-group dynamics, and actions. Like most of the social movements before it, the Symbionese Liberation Army recognized the importance of media utilization. Without the media coverage the organization needed and desired, the Symbionese Liberation Army could not have gained the popularity and power it sustained throughout the duration of the organization's movement. This study will examine the movement of the Symbionese Liberation Army in …
