Motivational Levels Of School-Aged Children After Participation In An Outdoor Education Experience, Timothy Eugene Speicher Jan 1998

Motivational Levels Of School-Aged Children After Participation In An Outdoor Education Experience, Timothy Eugene Speicher

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

How can we motivate our children to be active? This question has received significant attention in the past 20 years in our society and throughout the world. In days past, this question was not one of concern, as the children were working hard to help their families sustain their farms or businesses. Children often looked at their time away from family responsibilities as time to escape outdoors to play and have fun. Unfortunately, there has been a shift in our culture within the past 20 years towards a more sedentary type of lifestyle, embracing technology with all its time saving …

Mea Culpa: Formal Education And The Dis-Integrated World., Brian P. Coppola, Douglas S. Daniels Jan 1998

Mea Culpa: Formal Education And The Dis-Integrated World., Brian P. Coppola, Douglas S. Daniels

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Formal education has removed itself so far from any truly integrated view of the Natural World that fragmentation and certainty are prevailing ethics. Technological progress has resulted in increased specialization within academic disciplines and their concurrent separation from each other. Knowledge is extracted from a fully integrated world, but is examined and defined by the 'dis-integrated' objectives.

Principled Mentoring: Identifying Core Values For The Practice Of Mentoring, Peter F. Wilson Jan 1998

Principled Mentoring: Identifying Core Values For The Practice Of Mentoring, Peter F. Wilson

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

This theoretical study was done to promote additional research in mentoring, A great deal has been written about mentoring relationships and research has built a strong case for their value across a wide variety of settings. Mentoring is a centuries old practice in which younger or more inexperienced individuals are trained in a relational context by a more experienced, usually older individual. In more recent times mentoring has been most prominent in academic and business settings. Most often, mentoring takes the form of an unstructured relationship but many businesses and some universities have developed formal mentoring programs. The mentoring research …

Parent Childrearing Beliefs And Child Externalizing Behaviors In Families Of Adhd And Odd Children, June E. Hoefling

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the relationship between the perceived externalizing behaviors of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and the maladaptive childrearing beliefs of their parents. The study used archival survey data provided by Intervention Services, Inc., a community mental health center. Data from 338 families with a child diagnosed with ADHD or ODD were analyzed. The study used the Conners' Parent Behavior Rating Scale short version to measure the level of conduct problems, impulsivity, and hyperactivity of the children as perceived by the parents. The Adult-Adolescent Parenting Inventory was used to measure the degree of parental …

Evaluating Elaborative Interrogation's Efficacy With Expository Text, Rhonda Leah Boudreau Jan 1998

Evaluating Elaborative Interrogation's Efficacy With Expository Text, Rhonda Leah Boudreau

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This study investigated whether elaborative interrogation would be an effective learning strategy with lengthy expository text. One hundred undergraduates (65 females and 35 males) comprised the study’s 5 groups: a) naturalistic elaborative interrogation, b) self-study, c) repetition, d) elaborative interrogation with pre-underlined main ideas; and, e) elaborative interrogation with pre-underlined main ideas plus structured ‘why’ questions. The expectation was that elaborative interrogation would prove to be a potent learning strategy relative to lower-order strategies (e.g., repetition); and that, when using expository text, students may require some supports to maximize the strategy’s gains. All students read an eight page passage on …

The Fall And Rise Of Criminal Theory, George P. Fletcher Jan 1998

The Fall And Rise Of Criminal Theory, George P. Fletcher

Faculty Scholarship

These are good times – at least for the theory of criminal law. This special issue of Buffalo Criminal Law Review testifies to a remarkable surge of interest among younger scholars in perennial questions: Why should we punish offenders? Do we require a human act as a precondition for liability and what is its structure? What does it mean for someone to be guilty or culpable for committing an offense? How do we avoid contradictions in structuring the criteria of liability? The time has come for renewed intensity in pondering and discussing these basic issues.

The contributions of this symposium …

A Case Study Of An Electively Mute Child, Robert Driscol Jan 1998

A Case Study Of An Electively Mute Child, Robert Driscol

Graduate Research Papers

Selective mutism is characterized by the appropriate use of language in certain settings, with a consistent lack of language use elsewhere. The child is often viewed as shy, and it is assumed that the shyness is temporary and will be outgrown. The purpose of this paper is to explore the problem of selective mutism in school aged children for whom silence may extend for many months or even years. Selective mutism will be further defined, and frequency, duration, and a summary of treatment methods will be discussed. A case study that illustrates positive outcomes of a behavioral approach will also …

Resistance Is Futile: How Legal Writing Pedagogy Contributes To The Law's Marginalization Of Outsider Voices, Kathryn M. Stanchi

Scholarly Works

This Article will examine the ways in which legal writing pedagogy contributes to the marginalization of outsider voices in the law. In Part II, the Article explores the two reigning pedagogies of legal writing and describes the linguistic model used to gauge how teaching law as language marginalizes outsider voices. In Part III, the Article applies the linguistic model to explore specific examples of how legal writing pedagogy may contribute to the marginalization of certain groups by focusing on audience and socializing them into the culture and language of law. In Part IV, the Article considers various solutions, all of …
