Psychologists Collaborating With Clergy, Mark R. Mcminn, Laura C. Edwards, Brian R. K. Lim, Clark D. Campbell
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
If a patient adheres to religious values and practices, should the treating psychologist get input from a clergyperson? How frequent is clergy-psychologist collaboration? What obstacles impede such collaboration? An exploratory survey questionnaire was sent to 200 clergy, 200 psychologists interested in religious issues, and 200 psychologists selected without regard to religious interests or values. Four themes were assessed: types of collaborative activities, frequency of collaboration, obstacles to collaboration, and ways to enhance collaboration. Strategies for promoting clergy-psychologist collaboration include challenging unidirectional referral assumptions, building trust through proximity and familiarity, and considering the importance of shared values and beliefs.
Congregational Leadership And Spirituality In The Postmodern Era, Sandra Marie Schneiders
Congregational Leadership And Spirituality In The Postmodern Era, Sandra Marie Schneiders
Jesuit School of Theology
In addressing the issue of leadership in congregations which are increasingly influenced by the emergence of cultural postmodernism, I write not as one who is engaged in leadership or trained in the fields of organization and management, but as a theologian reflecting on the spirituality of contemporary religious. But part of my preparation for these reflections involved talking with a number of religious in leadership positions, asking them what were the major challenges they faced as leaders.

Modernity And The Satanic Face Of God, Michael J. Buckley S.J.
Religious Studies
The religious intellect must recognize that in the nineteenth century it confronts a unique situation, unprecedented both in the depth of its challenge and in the extension of its claims. During that period, the denial of the reality of God rose to achieve an articulate and influential presence within the intellectual culture of western Europe. This denial was no longer the persuasion of this or that idiosyncratic figure such as Diagoras of Melos or Theodore of Cyrene in preChristian antiquity; nor did it constitute the mentality of a peculiarly enlightened cast such as the d'Holbachian circle in Paris in the …

The "Same Actor Inference" In Employment Discrimination: Cheap Justice?, Julie S. Northup
Washington Law Review
In Proud v. Stone, a 1991 age-related employment discrimination case, the Fourth Circuit established the evidentiary principle that a "strong inference" of nondiscrimination arises when the same person hires and then fires the plaintiff within a short period of time. This "same actor inference" has been adopted in varying degrees by six other circuits. Only the Third Circuit has expressly declined to recognize the hirer-firer relationship as more than evidence from which the trier of fact may draw a reasonable inference. Courts invoking the "inference" have extended its applicability far beyond the original context so as to permit theoretically …
The Author Of Roe, Radhika Rao
The Author Of Roe, Radhika Rao
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
In her commentary, Professor Radhika Rao focuses upon Justice Blackmun's landmark opinion in Roe v. Wade, exploring the ways in which the Justice shaped and was in turn shaped by the abortion conflict. After describing Roe, she sets forth and responds to a wide range of criticisms of the decision. She then turns her attention to several other abortion and privacy cases, drawing some general insights into Justice Blackmun's jurisprudence. She highlights Justice Blackmun's concern for factual context and his compassion for the real people behind the cases he decided. Professor Rao connects these qualities with Justice Blackmun's opinion in …

Perceiving And Feeling Personal Discrimination: Motivation Or Inhibition For Collective Action?, Mindi D. Foster, Kimberley Matheson
Perceiving And Feeling Personal Discrimination: Motivation Or Inhibition For Collective Action?, Mindi D. Foster, Kimberley Matheson
Psychology Faculty Publications
Relative deprivation and group consciousness theories differ in their predictions of how personal discrimination and personal discontent will be related to taking collective action. According to relative deprivation theory, assessments of personal status should be unrelated to taking collective action.
In contrast, group consciousness theories suggest that while perceiving personal discrimination is necessary for collective action to occur, feelings of personal discontent may inhibit it. Female students completed questionnaires assessing their perceptions of, and affective responses to personal discrimination, as well as their participation in collective actions. A hierarchical regression analysis found that personal discrimination and discontent interacted such that …

Differentiating Regulation Of Public And Private Institutions: A Preliminary Inquiry, Jonathan G.S. Koppell
Differentiating Regulation Of Public And Private Institutions: A Preliminary Inquiry, Jonathan G.S. Koppell
Publications from President Jonathan G.S. Koppell
Twenty years ago, James Q. Wilson and Patricia Rachal argued that government cannot regulate itself. In an era of revived federalism, increased reliance on contractors, and proliferation of quasi-public organizations, the importance of government self-regulation is greater than ever. This paper tests an underlying assumption of Wilson and Rachal's claim: that regulation of public and private organizations can be differentiated. Employing a meta-research design, this pilot study uses existing regulatory case studies to create "regulatory relationship profiles" for public and private organizations. These profiles include information on the structure of the regulator, the intent of the regulation, the enforcement tools …

Cognition And Self-Presentation Among Publicly Self-Conscious, Shy Adolescent Females, Linda Greer-Clark
Cognition And Self-Presentation Among Publicly Self-Conscious, Shy Adolescent Females, Linda Greer-Clark
Wayne State University Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the cognition and self-presentation of early to middle aged adolescent girls who were self-conscious and shy, and explore the possible qualitative differences in cognition and self-presentation between shy/self-conscious girls, self-conscious/nonshy girls, and nonshy/nonself-conscious girls in a variety of social risk situations. Buss’s theory that self-conscious individuals are more psychologically vulnerable to high social risk situations than those who are not self-conscious was tested by examining the differences in cognition and self-presentation between adolescent girls who were self-conscious and labeled themselves as shy versus those who were just self-conscious during exposure to high …
Impact Of Violence Exposure On Urban Middle School Students, Carie Hand Mcgauley
Impact Of Violence Exposure On Urban Middle School Students, Carie Hand Mcgauley
Wayne State University Dissertations
Exposure to violence has reached epidemic proportions among youth in the United States in recent years (Fingerhut & Kleinman, 1990; Finkelhor & Dzuiba-Leatherman, 1994). Recently, efforts to quantify violence exposure, both direct victimization and victimization through witnessing, have been initiated. Additionally, researchers have begun to explore the effect such exposure exerts on its victims. The present study was designed to examine the psychological sequelae of exposure to violent events on urban middle school students. Participants consisted of 224 seventh and eighth grade students of diverse ethnic backgrounds from McKinley Middle School, located in Flint, Michigan. Students were fairly evenly divided …
Factors Affecting Paternal Adjustment During The Transition To Parenthood, Linda D. Seltzer-Sucher
Factors Affecting Paternal Adjustment During The Transition To Parenthood, Linda D. Seltzer-Sucher
Wayne State University Dissertations
An emerging body of research is identifying factors which put individuals at risk for experiencing a difficult adjustment during the transition to parenthood. The purpose of this study was to test a model for the prediction and identification of paternal risk factors. Forty seven couples expecting their first child were the subjects. Questionnaires which assessed paternal expectations regarding parenthood and prenatal marital satisfaction were administered in the third trimester of their wife's pregnancy. Two months postpartum, a second questionnaire was administered which included measures of paternal violated expectations, paternal postpartum marital satisfaction, paternal stress, infant temperament, maternal marital satisfaction, maternal …

Are Wildlife-Caused Losses Of Agriculture Increasing?, Alice P. Wywialowski
Are Wildlife-Caused Losses Of Agriculture Increasing?, Alice P. Wywialowski
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)
Both the percent of producers reporting and the value of wildlife-caused losses increased from 1989 to 1994. In 1994, 58% of respondents reported wildlife-caused losses of their agricultural commodities, an increase from the 55% of respondents who reported losses in 1989. Based on the median value of producer-estimated loss, wildlife caused losses cost producers approximately $591 million in 1994, $130 million more than in 1989. Losses based on producer estimates have been consistent with field-measured estimates of damage. While these losses represent 1 % of the value of agricultural production, losses were not evenly distributed and 23% of producers estimated …

Signal Bleed: Congress Attacks When It Sounds Like Sex, Josh C. Grushkin
UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal
Section 505 of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 attempts to eliminate the phenomenon of signal bleed from sexually explicit adult channels. This Note argues that section 505 of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 should ultimately be found unconstitutional, and that Congress address the phenomenon of signal bleed of sexually explicit programming through other alternatives which are less constitutionally offensive.

Identifying Patterns Of Ethical Sensitivity In Tv News Viewers: An Assessment Of Some Critical Viewing Skills, Rebecca A. Lind, Tammy T. Swenson Lepper, David L. Rarick
Communication Studies Faculty Works
This study applies a multidimensional assessment of ethical sensitivity to 104 viewers' descriptions and evaluations of a local TV news story about a hit-and-run accident. Ethical sensitivity is measured along four dimensions or abilities: ability to notice relevant story characteristics, ethical issues, consequences, and stakeholders. Cluster analysis reveals eight distinct clusters or patterns of ethical sensitivity abilities, which we label broadly aware, outcome oriented, consequence oriented, stakeholder oriented, issue oriented, fact oriented, outcome oriented, and broadly unaware.
