Effective Treatment Of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder : A Multimodal Approach, Dave A. Lipinski Jan 1998

Effective Treatment Of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder : A Multimodal Approach, Dave A. Lipinski

Graduate Research Papers

The beginning of the 1990's brought with it increased attention to what is becoming the most talked about disorder of childhood and adolescence, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This disorder is estimated to afflict between 3% and 9% of the entire United States school-aged population. The most common treatment consist of behavior modification, cognitive therapy, diet restrictions and food supplements, cognitive and social skill training, psychosocial interventions, interpersonal problem solving and prescription medicine such as Ritalin.

The literature on stimulant medication and psychosocial treatments for children with ADHD suggest that no single method of treatment alone yields significant long-term therapeutic …

Components Of Perceived Interpersonal Interaction, Travis Sola Jan 1998

Components Of Perceived Interpersonal Interaction, Travis Sola

McNair Scholars Journal

This paper focuses on the perception of different psychological structures which, taken together, constitute social action from the observer's perspective. Thus, action identification is conceptualized as a function of structural components (frame domain) and semantic features (semantic domain). Certain combinations of semantic features are prescriptive schemata for typical behavior. The participants were primed for prescriptive or non-prescriptive schemata, then engaged in a memory task. The memory task consisted of an acquisition phase (participants heard partial action event sentences) and a recognition phase (participants were asked to identify sentences they had heard). A higher false recognition of "new" sentences containing the …

Narrative Dance Vs. Abstract Dance: Teaching Both Sides Of Balanchine, Kent Drumond Jan 1998

Narrative Dance Vs. Abstract Dance: Teaching Both Sides Of Balanchine, Kent Drumond

Iowa Journal of Communication

In order to determine which viewers preferred - a narrative ballet or an abstract ballet - a survey was taken of viewers as they watched two ballets by Balanchine: "Allegro Brillante" (abstract) and "Apollo" (narrative). Osgood's semantic differential survey was the instrument used. Findings reveal chat viewers found "Allegro Brillante" faster, lighter, softer and kinder, while "Apollo" was slower, stronger, more honest, and only slightly more enjoyable. The free-form section of the survey revealed that viewers were looking for "relationships" in both types of dances. This study has important consequences for dance programming and education, for it shows that, contrary …

Short Term Memory For Tempo In A Motor Timing Experiment, Sari Hooper Jan 1998

Short Term Memory For Tempo In A Motor Timing Experiment, Sari Hooper

Open Access Master's Theses

This study investigated the role of short term memory in the motor reproduction of tempo. Seven undergraduate students participated in a finger-tapping experiment, in which retention intervals were incorporated into the classic continuation tapping paradigm. A two-way within-subjects design was employed, where subjects listen to and then attempt to reproduce a set tempo at 25 sub-second levels after retention intervals of 5 or 25 seconds. Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) software (Collyer, Boatright-Horowitz, & Hooper, 1997) was used to present stimulus tempos and record subjects tapping. Analyses of the inter-response intervals (IRls) indicated an effect of retention interval on the …

Landscape Management Challenges On The California Channel Islands, William L. Halvorson Jan 1998

Landscape Management Challenges On The California Channel Islands, William L. Halvorson

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Managing for sustained biodiversity and restoration of natural habitat has become increasingly important over the last two decades, first as mitigation for development (especially in wetlands), and , more recently in natural areas. The latter has come about as land managing agencies like the Department of Defense and Bureau of Land Management have seen the need to reverse the impact of past land uses and agencies like the National Park Service and The Nature Conservancy have taken on the responsibility for less-than-pristine lands.

On the California Channel Islands, the need for restoring and managing biodiversity is great, but this restoration …

Chiasmus In Antiquity: Structures, Analyses, Exegesis, John W. Welch Jan 1998

Chiasmus In Antiquity: Structures, Analyses, Exegesis, John W. Welch

Maxwell Institute Publications

The study of ancient literature has been enriched in the second half of the 20th century by the growing awareness and understanding of chiasmus in ancient literature. This form of inverted parallelism has been found in the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and in many other ancient writings.

The essays in Chiasmus in Antiquity, first published in Germany in 1981, examine the use and effect of chiasmus in the Old and New Testaments and the Book of Mormon, as well as in Sumero-Akkadian, Ugaritic, Talmudic, Greek, and Latin literatures. These essays have been reprinted in this first American edition …

Rule Of Law Amid Lawlessness: Counseling The Accused In Rwanda's Domestic Genocide Trials, Mark A. Drumbl Jan 1998

Rule Of Law Amid Lawlessness: Counseling The Accused In Rwanda's Domestic Genocide Trials, Mark A. Drumbl

Scholarly Articles

This article, by way of personal narrative, sets out my experiences with Legal Aid Rwanda in February and March of 1998. In doing so, it describes, from a defense counsel perspective, an attempt to create due process within a procedural void. Legal Aid Rwanda's mandate focused not on the handful of detainees actually selected to proceed to trial, but rather on the vast numbers languishing in prison. In the end, my experiences lead me to question the merit of a courtroom in addressing mass crimes, of adjudication as a device to promote national reconciliation in a post-genocidal society, and of …
