The Potential For Managing Urban Canada Geese By Modifying Habitat, James A. Cooper Jan 1998

The Potential For Managing Urban Canada Geese By Modifying Habitat, James A. Cooper

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)

Urban Canada goose (Branta canadensis) populations have grown rapidly during the past three decades. This paper reviews short-term and long-term urban goose management techniques, and using data for the Twin Cities of Minnesota, assesses the potential utility of habitat modification. Ninety-four percent of Twin Cities damage complaints occurred during the brood-rearing period, 5% in fall, and >l% in spring and winter. The potential for reducing goose damage by altering nest habitat is insignificant, brood-rearing habitat high but expensive, and fall and winter habitat low and also costly. Fences effectively thwart flightless geese but can entrap birds leading to …

Humane Society: Good Guys Or Gestapo?, R. David Dljulio Jan 1998

Humane Society: Good Guys Or Gestapo?, R. David Dljulio

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)

Humane Societies and Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals perform important functions for the state, the counties, the community, and the public in protecting animal rights and enforcing state animal laws. Their staffs are hardworking and well meaning, but are not trained in police work. As the Societies have the right to conduct searches, seize property, make arrests, and use deadly force, they are required by the Constitution to perform such functions only after they have shown probable cause to a neutral party and obtained a warrant. Their failure to obtain warrants before performing such intrusive functions violates …

Right To Strike: A Comparison Of Canadian And Chinese Law, Tianjiao Yu Jan 1998

Right To Strike: A Comparison Of Canadian And Chinese Law, Tianjiao Yu

LLM Theses

The socialist market economy was written into the Chinese Constitution in 1993. From then on, the Ministry of Labour stopped officially denying the existence of strikes in China. For the past several years, there have been numerous reports of labour unrest. However, there is in no law regulating strikes. Strikes are prohibited in China. This thesis is designed to conduct a comparison of Canadian and Chinese law respecting the right to strike. Chapter I is devoted to analysis of the right to strike under Canadian law in two aspects. The first aspect is the question of whether there is a …

The Foraging Ecology Of The Gray Rat Snake (Elaphe Obsoleta Spiloides)-Visual Stimuli Facilitate Location Of Arboreal Prey, Robert J. Cooper, Stephen J. Mullin Jan 1998

The Foraging Ecology Of The Gray Rat Snake (Elaphe Obsoleta Spiloides)-Visual Stimuli Facilitate Location Of Arboreal Prey, Robert J. Cooper, Stephen J. Mullin

Faculty Publications

We examined the responsiveness of adult gray rat snakes to avian prey in enclosures that simulated natural habitat conditions. Subjects searched for arboreal nest contents in the presence or absence of a bird model flown so as to simulate avian provisioning behavior. In the absence of the model, gray rat snake latency to capture prey was over 92 % greater than when searching for nest contents with the model. Snakes responded to model flight by turning their heads in the direction of its movement. We conclude that gray rat snakes perceive relatively distant visual cues from prey, and that nest …

Tools For Cognition: Student Free Access To Manipulative Materials In Controlversus Autonomy-Oriented Middle Grades Teachers’ Classrooms, Patricia S. Moyer-Packenham, Gail M. Jones Jan 1998

Tools For Cognition: Student Free Access To Manipulative Materials In Controlversus Autonomy-Oriented Middle Grades Teachers’ Classrooms, Patricia S. Moyer-Packenham, Gail M. Jones

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

This study investigated how middle grades students provided with free access to manipulative materials use these mathematical tools in classrooms where their teachers are identified as Control-Oriented and Autonomy-Oriented. Also of interest in this investigation was how Control-Oriented and Autonomy-Oriented teachers administered the free access treatment in their classrooms. A Pre -- Post -1 Post -2 design was used with two treatments. During Treatment 1, teachers used the manipulatives for mathematics instruction using the strategies learned in the summer professional development workshop. During Treatment 2, teachers provided students with free access to the manipulative materials. Results indicated teachers' control orientations--control …
