Ay 97 Compendium Army After Next Project, Douglas V. Johnson Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
These student papers are largely focused on present problems which must be solved before movement toward the future can make much progress. If they are not dramatically futuristic in approach, they are nevertheless set against a future backdrop which is still in the process of being defined. The broader Army After Next program, led by the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, is an experiment, an examination of what could be. The Army War College seeks to play its part through this contribution and by educating those officers who will field, staff, and command our future Army.
New Century, Old Thinking: The Dangers Of The Perceptual Gap In U.S.-China Relations, Susan M. Puska Colonel
New Century, Old Thinking: The Dangers Of The Perceptual Gap In U.S.-China Relations, Susan M. Puska Colonel
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
The author provides an examination of the reciprocal relations between China and the United States over the past century and a half. She articulates the theme that cycles of misperception have characterized the relationship. If this past is prologue, then potential conflict looms darkly over future U.S.-China interactions. The first step toward precluding conflict, according to the author, is to understand the nature of the past relationship. Then, the two countries must overcome the deep perceptual gap between their cultures, their historical views and their ideological perspectives. Such understanding, widely shared in each society, will not assure development of bilateral …
The Effect Of Unloading Body Weight During Aerobic Exercise On Blood Pressure, Heart Rate, And Perceived Exertion, Carolynn J. Bolander
The Effect Of Unloading Body Weight During Aerobic Exercise On Blood Pressure, Heart Rate, And Perceived Exertion, Carolynn J. Bolander
Masters Theses
The problem of the study was to examine the blood pressure, heart rate, and rating of perceived exertion of asymptomatic, active individuals during submaximal treadmill exercise while using an unloading system. Two levels of unloading, 20% unloaded body weight (UBW) and 40% UBW, were compared to 0% UBW. Treadmill speed was determined by the speed required to reach a steady state heart rate of 70% of maximum heart rate in an unloaded state. Twenty subjects, between the ages of 18 and 42 years, served as subjects. Subjects were grouped with respect to fitness level; walkers were those subjects who walked …
A Multiplicity Of Goals In A Migrant Household, Patrick James Maher
A Multiplicity Of Goals In A Migrant Household, Patrick James Maher
Masters Theses
This paper explores data collected on Mexican migrants who were living in southwestern Michigan during the Spring and Summer of 1994. Its purpose is to examine the role of the family among one migrant household and to determine whether the findings coincide with other studies completed on Mexican migrant families.
The data examined indicates two major problems in applying its findings to current migration literature. The first involves the concept of a 'united family unit' and the second relates to the notion of a 'common family goal.' The data suggests that the theory on which these concepts are based must …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought
VICTORIA WODZAK elegantly limns the distance, interaction, and tension between warriors and weavers, the heroic code and the domestic code, in classical epics, notably those of Homer and Beowulf. Wodzak is a Ph.D. candidate in the English program of the University of Missouri-Columbia, teaches composition for that Department, and not least is the mother of seven children, ages one to sixteen, to whom she attributes at least part of the inspiration for her essay. This is her first published scholarly work.

A "Party Satisfaction" Perspective On A Comprehensive Mediation Statute, Chris Guthrie, James Levine
A "Party Satisfaction" Perspective On A Comprehensive Mediation Statute, Chris Guthrie, James Levine
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
During the past fifteen years, the alternative dispute resolution movement has greatly altered the legal landscape. Courts, legislatures and administrative agencies have enacted more than 2000 laws dealing with mediation and other dispute resolution processes. The National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL) and the American Bar Association Section of Dispute Resolution have recently formed a unique partnership to assess whether a model or uniform mediation statute might remedy some of the problems caused by the current patchwork of often confusing and conflicting mediation laws. The task of drafting a comprehensive mediation statute poses many challenges. The drafters …

Student Assistance Teams: An Examination Of Accommodations Developed For Academic And Behavior Problems., Carla J. Schaefer
Student Assistance Teams: An Examination Of Accommodations Developed For Academic And Behavior Problems., Carla J. Schaefer
Student Work
Accommodations utilized by SAT teams have been explored in order to determine the success of the problem-solving, pre-referral intervention process as an alternative to special education referrals and placement. The results of the current study reflect insignificant results in the decline of special education referrals. In addition, chi square results looking at the use of specific accommodations as well as interventions that match the reason for referral was not significant. A decline in behavior referrals, slightly lower or consistent academic referrals, and consistent combination academic/behavior referrals was also not supported. Pre-referral intervention teams did not produce well-designed interventions. Previous research, …

The Effectiveness Of The Kids On The Block Program In Increasing Children's Knowledge Of And Attitudes Toward Individuals With Disabilities., Jean M. Schumacher
Student Work
This study evaluated the effectiveness of a disabilities awareness program, the Kids on the Block, in increasing students' knowledge of and attitudes toward individuals with disabilities. Kids on the Block is a program used around the world to educate children about disabilities, and to teach them to appreciate and accept differences in others. The Kids on the Block troop is composed of nearly life-size puppets, with and without disabilities, who look and act like real children. Seven hundred fifty-one second and fifth grade students drawn from three school districts in a large midwestem city participated in the study. Three hundred …

Perceptions About The Environment From The Cayo District Of Belize, Jeanie Vincent

Land use from associated exponential human population growth is causing dynamic and destructive changes on the Earth's surface. Before land use management can be modified to conserve our remaining global resources, however, a better understanding is needed of how physical and social land use aspects interact. This social science research was conducted to answer the research question of 'what variations in perception exist among three categories of the social construct; Local Workers, Land Owners/Managers, and Tourists in the Cayo District of Belize. Also examined were pertinent background factors and individual characteristics involved in perception and relationship formation such as social …

Blood Ties: A Rationale For Child Visitation By Legal Strangers, John Dewitt Gregory
Blood Ties: A Rationale For Child Visitation By Legal Strangers, John Dewitt Gregory
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
This Article addresses some of the issues that arise when non-parents seek visitation with other peoples' children. More often than not, natural parents successfully resist assertions of child visitation rights by legal strangers such as stepparents and so-called lesbian "coparents."' However, grandparents, aided by a raft of legislation and judicial decisions, fare infinitely better when petitioning for visitation with their grandchildren. This Article discusses the current law and legal scholarship concerning visitation rights of legal strangers and concludes that courts and legislatures should support legal parents' rights to raise their children without unwanted interference from legal strangers
What Are Students Learning?: Assessing Service Learning And The Curriculum, Kathryn Blash Cumbo, Jennifer A. Vadeboncoeur
What Are Students Learning?: Assessing Service Learning And The Curriculum, Kathryn Blash Cumbo, Jennifer A. Vadeboncoeur
Service Learning, General
Service learning, a method of learning and teaching, has the potential to move our educational system into the 21st century by providing a vehicle for integrating the needs of schools and communities while reflecting current reform agendas and providing meaningful learning experiences for students. In order for service learning to play a role in the transformation of our schools, however, educators must become successful at linking service to learning- making connections between service experiences and academic learning explicit. This paper explores the meaning of learning in service learning by explicating: a) how service learning links to current standards based reform …
Coping With "Loss": A Re-Examination Of Sentencing Federal Economic Crimes Under The Guidelines, Frank O. Bowman, Iii
Coping With "Loss": A Re-Examination Of Sentencing Federal Economic Crimes Under The Guidelines, Frank O. Bowman, Iii
Vanderbilt Law Review
The primary determinant of sentence length for federal economic criminals is the amount of "loss" resulting from an offender's conduct.' The idea of basing sentences for economic crimes primarily on "loss" has become the source of ongoing, complex, and proliferating disputes about what the term "loss" really means and how it should be interpreted in particular cases. The "loss" calculation is one of the most frequently litigated issues in federal sentencing law. There are at present splits of opinion between the federal circuits on at least eleven analytically distinct issues concerning the meaning and application of the "loss" concept. Even …
