An Exploratory Analysis Of Factors Driving Intermodal Transportation Usage, Philip T. Evers, Carol J. Emerson Apr 1998

An Exploratory Analysis Of Factors Driving Intermodal Transportation Usage, Philip T. Evers, Carol J. Emerson

Journal of Transportation Management

The purpose of this study is to investigate certain aspects of a transportation choice model proposed by Krapfel and Mentzer (1982) pertaining to the influence of shipper perceptions on the selection of a mode. Specifically, this study attempts to identify the impact that shipper perceptions of intermodal and over-the-road truck service, as well as other characteristics of the shipper, have on intermodal usage. The research findings support the notion that shipper perceptions affect modal usage and indicate areas in which intermodal providers should focus their attention to improve intermodal usage.

Mechanomorphosis: Science, Management, And “Human Machinery” In Industrial Canada, 1900–45, Cynthia Comacchio Apr 1998

Mechanomorphosis: Science, Management, And “Human Machinery” In Industrial Canada, 1900–45, Cynthia Comacchio

History Faculty Publications

By the early 20th century, the changes taking place in western industrial capitalist nations prompted an adaptive shift in the socioeconomic delineation of human bodies, and in scientific theories about how they worked and how they could be put to work. Just as the rising social sciences borrowed from medicine to convey images of social malaise, medicine increasingly appropriated an industrial vocabulary to conceptualize bodily health. Depicted variously as a machine, a motor, a factory in itself, the human body absorbed industrial symbolism. Modern industry demanded an intensification of labour that made bodily efficiency paramount. The corresponding definition of health …

Folk Songs Of Ghana: The Mosomagor Song Book, Julia Christensen Apr 1998

Folk Songs Of Ghana: The Mosomagor Song Book, Julia Christensen

African Diaspora ISPs

This project is focused on the traditional songs of Moscmagor, a village at the Eastern entrance to Kakum National Park. I was interested in learning to sing the songs, the meanings of the songs, as well as their histories and origins. I was also very interested in the singing techniques that are used, and how the singing of the songs is naturally effected by the fact that they have been learned within this oral culture. The fact that these songs are rarely written down gave me the idea of attempting to do so, using the Western process of notation. This …

Damaging Evidence: The Effects Of Brief Versus Extensive Explanations And Need For Cognition On Juror Verdicts, Jodi K. Simon Apr 1998

Damaging Evidence: The Effects Of Brief Versus Extensive Explanations And Need For Cognition On Juror Verdicts, Jodi K. Simon

Student Work

Previous research has shown that if an attorney reveals evidence to his or her case before the opposing attorney reveals the evidence, it will result in more favorable verdicts for his or her client. This study tested the most effective way for attorneys to reveal damaging evidence about their clients in opening statements by varying the amount of explanation the plaintiff's attorney gave of the damaging evidence. In addition, this study tested whether the participants' Need for Cognition would affect which type of opening statement was more persuasive. The participants read one of four different versions of fictitious opening statements …

A Comparison Of Two Omaha Radio Talk Shows: Local Vs. National Issues, Jodeane F. Brownlee, Michael L. Hilt

Communication Faculty Publications

It's 9:06 a.m. in Omaha, Nebraska. A stout, forty-year-old male with sandy blond air sips a cup of coffee. The "on air" microphone turns red signaling the start of a new morning on talk radio. "Good morning you're on news/talk 1110 KFAB." Tom Becka, a three-year veteran of talk radio speaks quickly and loudly. Becka describes his show and re audience as the gang in the kitchen. "By that I mean, if you're at a party the best part of the party is the gang in the kitchen," says Becka. "They're arguing, they're fighting, they're laughing, they're discussing, they're disagreeing. …
