Principles Of Sociopolitical Competency In Psychological Practice, Research, And Teaching, Richard E. Redding, Nina C. Silander
Principles Of Sociopolitical Competency In Psychological Practice, Research, And Teaching, Richard E. Redding, Nina C. Silander
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Research shows that sociopolitical attitudes and values (SPAVs) often play an important role in people’s personal and social identity, life choices, psychological and behavioral functioning, and interpersonal relationships (including those between psychologists and their clients). Thus, SPAVs are frequently relevant to the work that psychologists do, whether as clinicians, researchers, or educators. After reviewing the research on the impact of SPAVs on people’s lives and relationships, we provide a set of evidence-based principles for effectively addressing SPAVs in clinical practice, psychological research, education and professional training, and professional ethics.
The Relative Strength Of Social Media Motives, Perceived Race Relations, And The Centrality Of Black Identity In Predicting Black Community Activism, Johnnie Gordon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
As social media has become a central context for identity development, sociopolitical awareness, and civic engagement among Black emerging adults, exposure to racialized content, experiences of online discrimination, and competing narratives regarding racial progress may heighten awareness of systemic inequities and strengthen collective racial identity. To date, the potential of these experiences to motivate engagement in Black community activism to advocate for community empowerment has not been investigated. Informed by social identity theory, this quantitative study assessed the relative importance of motives for social media use, perceived racial progress, and Black identity centrality in predicting Black community activism among emerging …
A Retrospective Analysis Of Structured And Semi-Structured Training Program Design For Law Enforcement Recruits, Ian Bonder
Doctorate in Kinesiology
Law enforcement recruits typically complete law enforcement agency (LEA) academy training before assuming sworn-in duty. Tactical strength and conditioning facilitators (TSAC-F) may need to modify program design based on their unique circumstances. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of different training program designs in five state-mandated tests (vertical jump [VJ], 1-minute sit-ups and push-ups, 300-meter [300m] sprint, and 2.4-kilometer [2.4km] run) among LEA recruits at a Midwest LEA training academy. De-identified data for 26 LEA recruits (Periodized/Structured Group [PSG; n = 7]) and (Semi-structured Group [SSG; n = 19]) were retrospectively analyzed. Repeated measures ANOVA assessed …

The Intervention Design Specialist Program As A Tier Iii Support In Elementary Schools: An Explanatory Case Study, Kevin G. Spaulding
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
This explanatory qualitative case study explored how the Intervention Design Specialist (IDS) program functions as a Tier III behavioral intervention within the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework in elementary schools in Francis County Public Schools. Grounded in Social Cognitive Theory, the study examined stakeholders’ perceptions of the program’s purpose, implementation, influence on students with intensive behavioral needs, impact on classroom and school climate, and the factors that supported or challenged successful implementation. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observations of classroom interventions and team meetings, and review of program records. Data were analyzed using an inductive, iterative coding process …
Between Tradition And Profession: Intersectionality Of Javanese Women Journalists In Surakarta’S Newsroom, Rahman Hakim, Vanggi Eka Riski
Between Tradition And Profession: Intersectionality Of Javanese Women Journalists In Surakarta’S Newsroom, Rahman Hakim, Vanggi Eka Riski
JURNAL KOMUNIKASI INDONESIA
Javanese female journalists in Surakarta navigate the simultaneous pressures of professional journalism and deeply internalised Javanese cultural values such as nrimo (acceptance of one’s circumstances), andhap asor (humble and deferential conduct), and tepa selira (attentiveness to the feeling of others). These values shape their everyday conduct in the newsroom yet often remain unacknowledged in existing literature. Combining Intersectionality Theory, Face-Negotiation Theory (Ting-Toomey), and Self Theory (Rogers) as complementary frameworks, this qualitative study adopts a constructivist paradigm and employ phenomenological method to explore how female journalists make sense of the intersection between gender norms and local cultural values. Data were collected …
Getting Tolkien Right: Middle-Earth In The National Review, Craig Franson
Getting Tolkien Right: Middle-Earth In The National Review, Craig Franson
Journal of Tolkien Research
J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings entered Anglo-American popular consciousness as an emblem of 1960s, leftist youth culture, but the novel slowly gained currency across the political right. In the U.S., conservative intellectuals published book notes and articles on Tolkien’s writing in their movement’s leading journals, gradually habituating their readers to seeing the once-obscure English fantasist as a canonical writer for American conservatism. The most prominent of these journals was William F. Buckley’s National Review, which recurrently promoted Tolkien’s writing and offered a distinctly partisan interpretation of his texts. This paper offers a partial outline of the conservative …
The Moderation Of Gender In The Relationship Between Social Cognition And Narrative Language Skills In Autistic Children, Zara Khan, Coral Morley
The Moderation Of Gender In The Relationship Between Social Cognition And Narrative Language Skills In Autistic Children, Zara Khan, Coral Morley
OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference
Compared to males, autistic females often demonstrate a greater desire for social interactions and may imitate peers’ social behaviors, sometimes masking underlying social-cognitive difficulties (Hull et al., 2017; Lai et al., 2015). To better understand these differences, the present study focuses on two key components of social cognition (i.e., affect recognition and theory of mind (ToM)), and their associations with narrative listening comprehension. Gender may act as a moderator, showing variability between these variables; thereby providing a more nuanced view of autism that may inform assessment and screening practices rather than relying on the traditional male-centered research (Harrop et al., …

Pre-Existing Conditions And Their Effect On Neurological Prognosis And Rehabilitation In Older Cardiac Arrest Population - A Literature Review, Nadia A. Parsotan, Maya Awad, Greta Schmanke, Madeline Yee, Angelin Abraham
OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference
The effectiveness of cardiac arrest rehabilitation can be influenced by pre-existing conditions, such as diabetes and hypertension particularly in the older population, where these comorbidities are more prevalent. This literature review aims to understand how these conditions affect the neurological prognosis and rehabilitation in cardiac arrest patients aged 60+. A systematic PubMed search was conducted for peer-reviewed studies published within the past 15 years using terms related to cardiac arrest, neurological outcomes, rehabilitation, and common chronic conditions. Studies were included if they focused on adults aged 60 and older, reported at least one pre-existing medical condition, and provided neurological rehabilitation …
Bidirectional Associations Between Social-Cognitive Processes And Mathematics Achievement In Autistic Children, Carole M. Wadie, Conner Peltier, Quinn Slyker
Bidirectional Associations Between Social-Cognitive Processes And Mathematics Achievement In Autistic Children, Carole M. Wadie, Conner Peltier, Quinn Slyker
OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference
Mathematics achievement is a critical component of academic functioning, strongly predicting later educational and life outcomes (Kaskens et al., 2022; Tonizzi & Usai, 2024). Although prior research has examined mathematics achievement and general cognition, limited work has investigated the role of social-cognitive processes in mathematical development among autistic children. Skills such as theory of mind (ToM), affect recognition, and inferencing may support mathematical learning by enabling children to interpret instructions, integrate information, and apply conceptual understanding (Kloo et al., 2022; Kim et al., 2021). Developmental cascade theory suggests that functioning in one domain may influence development in another, with bidirectional …
The Power Of Physical Activity And Sleep: Sex-Specific Pathways To Cognitive Health In Older Adults, Gabriella K. Waldbauer
The Power Of Physical Activity And Sleep: Sex-Specific Pathways To Cognitive Health In Older Adults, Gabriella K. Waldbauer
OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference
Physical activity (PA) and sleep health are associated with cognition. However, limited research has examined the interactive effects of PA and sleep on domain-specific cognitive function in older adults. Although sex differences exist independently across all factors, sex-specific interactive investigations are limited. This study investigated whether the relationship between PA, sleep and cognition varies by sex in older adults. Older adults (N=119; Mage=68.3±5.6; 73 women) completed measures of insomnia severity (Insomnia Severity Index), physical activity (International Physical Activity Questionnaire) and cognition (NIH Toolbox-Cognitive Battery). Multiple regressions examined whether insomnia severity interacted with physical activity in associations with cognition and tested …

Insomnia is a prevalent health issue impacting many adults alongside other mental disorders. One common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) which is now increasingly delivered through smartphone apps. With an upward trend in adults, these applications offer a potential accessible and scalable solution. This study evaluated the efficacy of internationally available mental health apps utilizing CBT principles for adults diagnosed with insomnia under the DSM-5 which were compared to the control group with no psychotherapy app exposure.
A systematic review was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus. Eligible studies were published within the last 5 years, …
The Effect Of Distraction On Emotion-Based Communication Behaviors, Twisha Nadella
The Effect Of Distraction On Emotion-Based Communication Behaviors, Twisha Nadella
OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference
As technology becomes increasingly integrated in daily activities, there are growing concerns for the effects of multi-tasking within the workplace. It is important to consider how communication efficiency may be impacted by dual-task situations. Therefore, understanding the potential outcomes that distraction may have on language production is valuable in determining optimal working conditions for effective use of emotional communication. This dual-task study was designed to understand the effects of distraction on emotion-based communication behavior. A driving task was utilized as the means of distraction in this experiment, while the concurrent negotiation task was analyzed to understand how emotional language was …
Maternal Feedback Over Time: Associations With Youth Perceptions Of Autonomy Support, Andrew Middleton, Genevieve Martin, Alyssa Lazanowski, Wendy M. Rote
Maternal Feedback Over Time: Associations With Youth Perceptions Of Autonomy Support, Andrew Middleton, Genevieve Martin, Alyssa Lazanowski, Wendy M. Rote
OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference
Parental feedback and direction are often interpreted as controlling; however, developmental theory suggests these behaviors may function as autonomy support when they are responsive to youths’ need. Drawing on self-determination theory, autonomy supportive parenting involves the promotion of volitional functioning through behaviors that align with youths’ perspectives and fosters independent problem-making and a sense of choice (McCurdy et al., 2020; Zhang & Whitebread, 2021). Similarly, scaffolding frameworks emphasize that provisions of parental support (e.g., feedback, direction, and emotional encouragement) contingent on the child’s task performance can promote higher levels of independent functioning (Mermelshtine, 2017; Salonen et al., 2007). The present …
A Momentary Examination Of Surface Acting And Its Impact On Subsequent Affective States Among College Students, Aditya D. Patel
A Momentary Examination Of Surface Acting And Its Impact On Subsequent Affective States Among College Students, Aditya D. Patel
OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference
Though the psychological costs of surface acting, or the modification of outward emotional expression without concurrent alteration of genuine internal feelings, are well studied in service-oriented sectors, its impact on college students navigating social and academic demands is comparatively under-researched. This investigation seeks to examine the momentary and trait-level dynamics of surface acting and its impact on positive and negative affective states among collegiate populations. Observations were performed through a 5 day ecological momentary assessment protocol involving 72 undergraduate students, yielding over 1500 observations that were analyzed using multilevel vector autoregression to construct temporal, contemporaneous, and between-subjects networks. Temporal networks …

Gender Differences In The Diagnosis Of Histrionic Personality, Monica Hennawy, Heidi Lieu, Dayanna Gonzalez, Devin Dombroski, Kaylie Jusino Ortiz, Genelle Leo
OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference
Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD) is characterized by attention-seeking, emotionality, and dramatic or seductive behaviors. Individuals with HPD often feel discomfort when not the center of attention and may use exaggerated affect to gain approval. While gender differences in diagnosis and presentation have been reported, the influence of trauma and comorbid conditions - such as alcohol use disorder (AUD) and eating disorders (EDs) - remains underexplored. A literature review was conducted using PubMed with search terms including HPD, trauma, substance use, and eating disorders. A total of 157 articles were identified. Studies not addressing at least two relevant domains were excluded. …
The Overestimation Of Minority Group Size, Kennedy Tennant, Kiara Overstreet, Ty Curci
The Overestimation Of Minority Group Size, Kennedy Tennant, Kiara Overstreet, Ty Curci
OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference
Politicians and citizens often claim that a problem is "growing" or even "out of control" without providing metrics to support their claim. We wondered if people who fear immigration might be prone to overestimate the percentage of people who they perceive as "foreign" and further, whether that overestimation is moderated by the degree of fear or contempt held towards that group. In Study 1, participants viewed fictitious graduate school applications and then estimated the percentage of applicants that were from the Middle East. In study 2, participants viewed fictitious head shots and estimated the percentage of individuals who were wearing …

Benefits Of Art Therapy On Quality Of Life In Middle Aged Women With Gynecological And/Or Breast Cancer, Rylee N. Diehl, Iman Ahmed, Piper S. Bell, Lamya Moore, Giada Anastasi, Constanza Bravo Rodriguez, Taylor Edmondson
OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference
Art therapy involves the use of art representations in clinical and mental health care. Art mediums such as painting, dance, and movement can be interventions for diagnoses such as gynecological or breast cancer (GBC). GBC incidence is highest among women 45-65, and art therapy has shown potential to improve their quality of life (QoL). Art therapy’s impact on QoL is often assessed by measuring physical and mental health, coping and adjustment capabilities, healthcare relationships, and social life. Using the PRISMA guidelines, a systematic review was conducted with an initial 181 articles extracted from multiple journals of psychology. A final selection …
The Gothic’S Boy Mom: A Depiction Of The Jocasta Complex In Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca, Rylee N. Diehl
The Gothic’S Boy Mom: A Depiction Of The Jocasta Complex In Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca, Rylee N. Diehl
OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference
This paper explores the dynamic between Mrs. Danvers and Rebecca in Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca. It is revealed later in the novel that Mrs. Danvers worked for Rebecca’s family prior to becoming the housekeeper of Manderley. She took on a maternal role over the other woman that was characterized by an overbearing love for her. After Rebecca’s death, this love turned into obsession and readers have often noted sexual undertones within the way Mrs. Danvers refers to the woman she watched grow up. This is reminiscent of Raymond de Saussure’s Jocasta Complex which analyzes a mothers incestual fixation with her …

OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference
Narcissistic Personality Disorder is a mental health condition categorized into grandiose and vulnerable narcissism. Current guidelines used to evaluate NPD include the ICD-11 and DSM, however, the accuracy of their results is arguable. NPD presents differently in males vs. females which may lead to misdiagnosis. This study reviews how clinician judgements are influenced by the gender-based differences in the presentation of narcissistic traits while using current diagnostic guidelines, aiming to understand the misdiagnosis of NPD when the traits are less grandiose. A literature review was conducted through PubMed using the search terms: (“Narcissistic Personality Disorder” OR narcissism) AND (“gender differences” …

Behavioral addictions are non-substance compulsive disorders creating urges to engage with actions such as gambling and internet gaming disorder (IGD). Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) use conscious awareness of the present to improve both mental and physical health. However, their long-term effectiveness remains unclear compared to other therapies. This literature review explores how the use of MBIs, compared to other therapeutic techniques, help adults and adolescents struggling with behavioral addictions. A systematic screening of peer-reviewed articles was conducted using PubMed. Of 135 articles published from 2021-2026, “mindfulness”/“meditation”, “behavioral addiction”/”gambling”/“gaming disorder”/“internet”, and “long-term”/“relapse”, only studies that explored MBIs for behavioral addiction with experimental …

The Differential Impacts Of State Surface Acting And Between-Person Expressive Suppression On Daily Emotional Experiences, Arin Singh, Laraib Farooq, Kerri Bump
OneUSF Undergraduate Research Conference
Surface acting is a form of emotional labor involving the modification of external emotional expression without changing internal feelings. While consistently linked to negative psychological outcomes, less is known about how momentary changes in surface acting influence daily life or how these influences interact with between-person differences in emotion regulation. The current study used an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) design to examine how within-person variability and between-person differences in both surface acting and expressive suppression predict subsequent positive and negative affect. Participants (N = 70) provided momentary reports over the course of five days. Using multilevel modeling to disaggregate within-person …
Sleep Restriction And Its Affects On Mood, April M. Rummery Lamb
Sleep Restriction And Its Affects On Mood, April M. Rummery Lamb
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
Sleep plays a fundamental role in the human body being able to function effectively, in particular it plays an essential role in mood regulation. Previous research on sleep and mood has found that there is a correlation between receiving an inadequate amount of sleep and having a negative mood. However, the current field has mostly looked at the relationship between disordered sleep and mood disorders as opposed to everyday sleep patterns and daily mood. The present study aims to look at how sleep restrictions which occur naturally (not caused by sleep disorders such as insomnia) effect daily mood. To conduct …
The Missing Void: Lack Of Pockets In Womenswear And Its Effect On Daily Life, Clare Bolon
The Missing Void: Lack Of Pockets In Womenswear And Its Effect On Daily Life, Clare Bolon
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
Pockets give power to people who possess them. Yet, an estimated half of the U.S. population —women— frequently wear garments lacking useful pockets. Why? Womenswear is molded by beauty standards. This study brings an anthropological perspective on gender inequality in the U.S. by examining modern clothing and the differences in pocket access by gender. 127 participants were recruited for a mixed methods survey, most from a medium-sized university in the Mountain West region. Survey questions explored the attitudes and experiences of people who wear women’s clothing regarding pockets (or the lack thereof) and its impact on their daily lives. Open-ended …
Forecasting Affective State From Interaction Streams: A Closed Loop With Heat-Decay Memory, Label-Free Mood Estimation, And Trajectory-Based Crisis/Venting Separation (Loci R+E), Arko Sanyal
Defensive Publications Series
We ask whether a person's near-future affective state can be forecast from the interaction stream alone — no self-report, no labeled emotions. We describe a closed forecasting loop that converts an interaction stream into a bounded affect estimate and projects it forward. The loop decomposes interaction into parallel streams: a heat-decay salience stream (recurrence-weighted, exponentially decaying), an exact-value stream, a mood stream derived from reconstruction error against the person's own adaptive percentile band (arousal, valence, coherence — no labeled emotions), a reflection stream, and a forecast stream. On a held-out 24-hour criterion the loop reaches 74% mood-forecast accuracy versus 48% …
