Characteristics Of Internalizing Social-Emotional Behaviors Of Southwestern Native American Children, Carolyn Thomas Morris May 1998

Characteristics Of Internalizing Social-Emotional Behaviors Of Southwestern Native American Children, Carolyn Thomas Morris

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The knowledge base targeting internalizing symptomatology in Native American children is surprisingly limited. As yet, it is not clear if the process and symptoms of internalizing disorders are the same across cultures. The need for further investigation is heightened by the fact that, compared to the majority population, Native Americans are believed to be at greater risk for psychological problems because of impoverished conditions, high unemployment, and high numbers of traumatic events on the reservations. Additionally, the losses of traditional culture and language are considered risk factors for greater psychopathology. The negative ramifications of internalizing disorders (e.g., depression and anxiety) …

Interdependence, Punitive Capability, And The Reciprocation Of Punitive Actions In Channel Relationships, Nirmalya Kumar, Lisa K. Scheer, Jan-Benedict E. M. Steenkamp May 1998

Interdependence, Punitive Capability, And The Reciprocation Of Punitive Actions In Channel Relationships, Nirmalya Kumar, Lisa K. Scheer, Jan-Benedict E. M. Steenkamp

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Using data from automobile dealers in the Netherlands, the authors find that dealers' punitive actions toward their key suppliers are affected by their perceptions of their own and their supplier's interdependence and punitive capabilities, as well as by the supplier's punitive actions. Punitive actions are affected by interdependence, but a more complete picture is achieved by also examining punitive capability. The authors test hypotheses based on bilateral deterrence, conflict spiral, and relative power theories, but none of these comprehensively explains the effects of both total power and power asymmetry. Dealer punitive actions are inhibited as total interdependence increases, but are …

Mentor-Protege Relationship Formation In Graduate Psychology Programs: A Comprehensive Literature Review And Proposal, John R. Bigelow Jr. May 1998

Mentor-Protege Relationship Formation In Graduate Psychology Programs: A Comprehensive Literature Review And Proposal, John R. Bigelow Jr.

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

This paper proposes a model designed to encourage and facilitate the formation of mentoring relationships between professors and students in graduate psychology training programs. Previous research indicates approximately one in two graduate students had a mentor, those that did not were unaware of the potential benefits. Professors frequently reported insufficient motivation to mentor. Recently the call was made to provide mentoring to all psychology graduate students because mentoring is associated with personal and professional development. Aspects of mentoring relationships, including stages, benefits, selection criteria and strategies, and functions provided by mentors, have received attention. However, the formation of mentoring relationships …

The Effects Of Conjoint Behavioral Consultation And A Structured Homework Program On Math Completion And Accuracy In Junior High Students, Robin K. Weiner, Susan M. Sheridan, William R. Jenson May 1998

The Effects Of Conjoint Behavioral Consultation And A Structured Homework Program On Math Completion And Accuracy In Junior High Students, Robin K. Weiner, Susan M. Sheridan, William R. Jenson

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

The effects of conjoint behavioral consultation (CBC) and a structured homework program on math homework completion and accuracy in junior high school students (grades seven through nine) who were at risk for academic failure were investigated. A multiple baseline design across five participants was utilized. Follow-up data were collected approximately one month after CBC was completed, to assess maintenance over time. Four of the five students improved their completion rates during treatment. Accuracy rates increased during treatment, but to a lesser degree. At follow-up, three of the five students maintained or improved gains they made during treatment. One student who …

Predicting Academic Achievement In Deaf Poulations Using Measures Of Learning And Memory, Kelly Gleason

Theses

The purpose of this study was to (1) examine the correlation between a test of academic achievement (SAT-9) and a test of cognitive ability (WISC-III PIQ), and between a test of academic achievement (SAT-9) and tests of memory and learning (TOMAL VSR and WSR subtests), and (2) to examine the degree to which each type of test (either WISC-III PIQ, TOMAL WSR, or TOMAL VSR) is predictive of achievement in several achievement areas for deaf and hard of hearing children. The TOMAL WSR and VSR subtests were administered to 30 children enrolled at a school for the deaf in Buffalo, …

Exploring Teacher Thinking About Practices In Inclusive Early Childhood Settings Through Case Study Method: Early Childhood And Early Childhood Special Educators' Perspectives, Karen R. Danbom May 1998

Exploring Teacher Thinking About Practices In Inclusive Early Childhood Settings Through Case Study Method: Early Childhood And Early Childhood Special Educators' Perspectives, Karen R. Danbom

Theses and Dissertations

This is a study of the thinking and reasoning underlying the teaching practices of early childhood and early childhood special educators. It provides an opportunity to better understand the nature of teaching in integrated classrooms by understanding the knowledge, beliefs, and thoughts that inform practices of individual teachers. The thinking of teachers was studied as they were interviewed about situations in integrated classrooms and as they reflected on their own teaching of children with and without disabilities. The questions guiding this study were (a) How do early childhood educators and early childhood special educators reason and think through issues of …

English Loanwords In Chicano Spanish: Characterization And Rationale, Robert N. Smead May 1998

English Loanwords In Chicano Spanish: Characterization And Rationale, Robert N. Smead

Faculty Publications

One highly visible, often stigmatized feature of Chicano Spanish is lexical innovation due to intimate contact with English and the mainstream culture. As noted in table 1, these Anglicisms are the result of varying degrees of host language adaptation and integration and include at least three distinct types of innovations: the lexical switch, the loanword, and the calque.

Support For The Validity Of The Graduate Record Examination, Timothy Melchert May 1998

Support For The Validity Of The Graduate Record Examination, Timothy Melchert

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Comments on the article by R. J. Sternberg and W. M. Williams (see record 1997-04591-002) regarding the empirical validity of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) in predicting graduate student performance in psychology. It is argued that Sternberg and Williams used a misleading approach for analyzing their data. Predicting precise levels of achievement in graduate school from GRE scores alone when all admitted students are judged to be highly capable will necessarily result in low correlations. High achievement in any profession is dependent on a confluence of factors, and any single factor will necessarily be a relatively weak predictor of …

Chemically Mediated Foraging Preference Of Black Bears ( Ursus Americanus), Bruce A. Kimball, Dale L. Nolte, Richard M. Engeman, John J. Johnston, Frank R. Stermitz

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The role of chemical constituents in the foraging behavior of black bears (Ursus americanus) was investigated using two field studies. Vascular tissue samples were collected from Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) trees recently foraged by black bears. Samples were extracted and analyzed by liquid and gas chromatography to determine carbohydrates and terpenes, respectively. Chemical data were subjected to correlation analyses and multiple regression to examine if they adequately describe observed foraging preferences. Free-ranging black bears also were offered a choice of four test diets that differed in content of carbohydrates and terpenes. Results indicated that forage preferences were …

The Development Of Psychometric Analysis Of An Error-Choice Test To Measure Teacher Attitudes Toward Students With Adhd, Thomas Michael Hepperlen May 1998

The Development Of Psychometric Analysis Of An Error-Choice Test To Measure Teacher Attitudes Toward Students With Adhd, Thomas Michael Hepperlen

Theses and Dissertations

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is an increasingly pervasive psychiatric disorder among elementary school aged children. It is estimated that between three and five percent of all grade-school children suffer from this disorder. Because teachers are central figures in the academic environment of young children, any negative attitudes that teachers hold about ADHD could have a tremendous impact on the academic self-efficacy and success of students diagnosed with ADHD. An extensive literature review found no instruments designed to measure attitudes toward persons with ADHD.

The present study developed a psychometric instrument to measure teacher attitudes toward children with ADHD. This …

Study In The Use Of Modifications With Students Diagnosed With Attention Deficit Disorder, Judith M. Thourot Apr 1998

Study In The Use Of Modifications With Students Diagnosed With Attention Deficit Disorder, Judith M. Thourot

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to survey the modifications made for students who had been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder in two school districts and to compare the results with those recommendations made by experts. This was accomplished by comparing two school district programs: Waterford Township Public School and Edgewater Park School District.

A survey recorded the information on these recommendations. The results provided the documentation of individual student needs.

The conclusions indicated that there was a correlation between the modifications being used by the professionals in both school districts and the recommendations as proposed by experts.

Special Educators And Job Satisfaction, Joyce A. Devito Apr 1998

Special Educators And Job Satisfaction, Joyce A. Devito

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined how specific variables affected job satisfaction among special educators at a special education school district. The variables examined were gender, student population, number of years teaching, number of years teaching a specific population, and age of students. It was hypothesized that female teachers and teachers who worked with emotionally disturbed students would express less job satisfaction than male teachers and teachers working with other special education populations. It was further hypothesized that the greater the number of years teaching and working with a specific population, the greater the expressed job satisfaction. In addition, it was thought that …
