A Cognitive Approach To Teaching Research Skills, Christine M. Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this project was to develop a method for teaching research skills to sixth graders that would be appropriate for their cognitive abilities and prepare them for the research skills required by the seventh grade curriculum. Three classroom teachers and fifty-seven sixth grade students participated in this project. A short research project served as a pretest and inventory for knowledge of research skills. A unit of research skills and project preparation was then taught to the students in a series of eight lessons. Each skill modeled during the lessons provided concrete student learning. Intuition In The Undergraduate Nursing Curriculum: Faculty Attitudes, Practices And Preparation, Beverly Jean Epeneter May 1998

Intuition In The Undergraduate Nursing Curriculum: Faculty Attitudes, Practices And Preparation, Beverly Jean Epeneter

Dissertations and Theses

The primary goal of undergraduate nursing programs is to prepare students for nursing practice. Achievement of this goal may be hindered by reliance on the scientific method in nursing education. Nursing practice often requires the ability to make judgments in situations of ambiguity without the benefit of objective data. The ability to rapidly "read" a situation and respond appropriately is critical to safe nursing care. This requires education in the intuitive way of knowing. Intuitive development may be impeded when students are taught to rely on the rational, scientific way of knowing. The end result may be that students are …

A Multicultural Curriculum For The Third Grade In The Library Media Center At The Rieck Avenue School, Millville, N.J., Joyce A. Rankin May 1998

A Multicultural Curriculum For The Third Grade In The Library Media Center At The Rieck Avenue School, Millville, N.J., Joyce A. Rankin

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis project developed a multicultural curriculum for the third grade classes at the Rieck Avenue School, Millville, New Jersey, which adhered to the Core Curriculum Standards. The question to be answered was "How can third graders achieve an historical understanding of the varying cultures of New Jersey, the United States, and the world through the library media center curriculum?" Because of the changing demographics of our country and the increase of minority students in our schools, it is imperative that students learn how to appreciate, understand, and interact with people who are ethnically, racially, and culturally different than themselves. …

Two hundred twenty-one surveys were sent to the 13 school districts in Gloucester County. Eighty-four participants responded. The largest response was from librarians. Developing Criteria For Choosing Bibliographic Databases In High School Libraries, Darlene Michel

Theses and Dissertations

This study developed criteria for choosing bibliographic databases for high school libraries. A survey was conducted to find out students' opinions about the databases that they use in school to access books, periodicals, and newspaper articles. The survey covered frequency of database use, favorite and least favorite databases, reasons for using the databases, desirable and undesirable characteristics of databases, and types of searching that were used. The survey was administered to 85 students in four 11th grade college-preparatory English classes after a class period devoted to database searching for an assignment. All students completed and handed in the survey. Conclusions …

A Comparison Of New Jersey Certification Requirements For Educational Diagnosticians With Six Other States, Elizabeth O'Neill May 1998

A Comparison Of New Jersey Certification Requirements For Educational Diagnosticians With Six Other States, Elizabeth O'Neill

Theses and Dissertations

This study compares the New Jersey certification requirements for educational diagnosticians with the requirements of six other states. Child Study Team compositions were also examined. The search was narrowed to six states when interviews with state licensing agencies and state universities did not yield comprehensive information. In order to obtain more in-depth information, the research was conducted via phone interviews with employees from counties within each of the six states. Information received was hand recorded. Raw data was converted to percentages. None of the other six states required additional certification for the educational diagnostician who determines eligibility for special education. …

The Legal Construction Of Gender, Trena Lee Klohe May 1998

The Legal Construction Of Gender, Trena Lee Klohe

Student Thesis Honors (1996-2008)

The existence of biologically, psychologically and socially transgendered persons challenges commonplace notions about "the sexes." The entry of transgendered persons and their concerns into the legal arena has forced the law on occasion to examine its usually implicit assumptions about sex and gender. This paper explores the following questions: is sex truly an "immutable characteristic" for all legal purposes? If not, at what point and under what circumstances does the law acknowledge a change from one sex to the other? This paper also examines the legal enforcement of gendered social norms. Such norms are frequently at odds with personal experience, …

The Body Of Christ: The Claim Of The Crucified People On U.S. Theology And Ethics, Robert Lassalle-Klein May 1998

The Body Of Christ: The Claim Of The Crucified People On U.S. Theology And Ethics, Robert Lassalle-Klein

Journal of Hispanic / Latino Theology

This essay addresses the claim of the crucified people of El Salvador on theology and ethics, as they are done in the United States. Part I discusses the idea of the "crucified people," grounding the concept in the historical reality of the crucified people of El Mozote, El Salvador, and interpreting its meaning with reference to the overarching theological notion of the reign of God, presented in soteriological perspective. Part II develops a formal philosophical and theological outline of the Christian historical realism behind this important new concept, before presenting and interpreting the claims the crucified people present to theology …
