A Note On The Empirical Futility Of Labor-Intensive Scoring Permutations For Assessing Scholarly Productivity: Implications For Research, Promotion/Tenure, And Mentoring, Christine Hanish, John J. Horan, Bethanne Keen, Ginger Clark Aug 1998

A Note On The Empirical Futility Of Labor-Intensive Scoring Permutations For Assessing Scholarly Productivity: Implications For Research, Promotion/Tenure, And Mentoring, Christine Hanish, John J. Horan, Bethanne Keen, Ginger Clark

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

The measurement of scholarly productivity is embroiled in a controversy concerning the differential crediting of coauthors. Some researchers assign equivalent shares to each coauthor; others employ weighting systems based on authorship order. Horan and his colleagues use simple publication totals, arguing that the psychometric properties of labor-intensive alternatives are unknown, and relevant ethical guidelines for including coauthors are neither widely understood nor consistently followed. ...

Methodological Considerations In Pretrial Publicity Research: Is The Medium The Message?, Jeffrey R. Wilson, Brian H. Bornstein Aug 1998

Methodological Considerations In Pretrial Publicity Research: Is The Medium The Message?, Jeffrey R. Wilson, Brian H. Bornstein

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Two methodological issues within the pretrial publicity (PTP) literature were examined in the present experiment: the effect of emotional versus factual PTP and the effect of presenting PTP through different media. Emotional and factual PTP were constructed that differed in level of emotionality, but produced the same degree of bias. The PTP was presented in either a videotaped or written format. Although there was a significantly biasing effect of PTP overall compared to a control condition, no significant difference was found either between factual and emotional PTP or between video and written PTP.

Adolescent Self-Reported Activity Participation Satisfaction And Substance Use, Diana Caswell Aug 1998

Adolescent Self-Reported Activity Participation Satisfaction And Substance Use, Diana Caswell

Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the level of satisfaction derived from participating in extracurricular activities and self-reported substance use. Thirty six high school students completed a self-report survey assessing their extracurricular activity participation, satisfaction with participation, and aspects of substance use. Results indicated that as level of satisfaction with participation in activities increased, the reported substance use decreased. A positive relationship was found between amount of time spent in activities and alcohol use. In addition, a significant positive relationship was found between participation in athletic activities and alcohol use, as well as, participation in …

This paper traces trends in the technological advances of computer and communication systems and examines the promises of the Information Society: global information sharing; and, intelligent decision-support. The technological developments that will lead to the realization of Cyberspace, an information rich environment in which virtual reality capabilities couple directly to the human senses, is explored in terms of five essential components: information processing requirements; communication networks; computing devices (i.e., platforms); hardware and software user-interfaces; and, the meaningful representation of information.

Attention is drawn to the critical role played by information representation in a Cyberspace environment. The author argues …

Betrayed. The Legacy Of The African American Soldier, Timothy Hampton Aug 1998

Betrayed. The Legacy Of The African American Soldier, Timothy Hampton

Honors Theses

America has called upon its citizens on many occasions to defend its interests. Once called upon, American citizens usually respond with enthusiasm, courage, and great composure. They become American soldiers. The citizen/soldier's obligation is to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic," and to "bear true faith and allegiance to the same...." (Department of Defense Form No. 4, 1992). With this affirmation, military campaigns are launched. Missions are undertaken. Battles are fought. Ultimately, people die fighting for this nation.

Selectionist Thought And Methodological Orthodoxy In Psychological Science, David L. Morgan Aug 1998

Selectionist Thought And Methodological Orthodoxy In Psychological Science, David L. Morgan

The Psychological Record

Selectionist theory in psychology conceptualizes behavior as a dynamic phenomenon subject to a variation and selection process similar to that characterizing biological evolution. Though not formally recognized as a dominant psychological metatheory, selectionist thought can be identified in the writings of many of the discipline's eminent scholars. Although selectionism may possess considerable promise as a unifying theory, its widespread acceptance has likely been impeded by the large sample, null hypothesis testing research designs associated with the Fisherian tradition.
