An Evaluation Of The Competency Modeling Method Used By A Major Telecommunications Company, Sharon K. Kramer Jan 1998

An Evaluation Of The Competency Modeling Method Used By A Major Telecommunications Company, Sharon K. Kramer

Theses

This thesis focuses on competency model development methods and evaluating an actual competency model development method used by a consulting company on behalf of its client.

As HRD professionals get down to actually measuring human performance against the model they set forth to specify competency and its associated behaviors, they often find behavioral measurements to be subjective and relative, rather than objective and criterion-based.

The purpose of this study is to review competency model definitions and development methods, as well as the implications for using competency models to improve human performance, business results and competitive advantage.

The competency model development …

Empowerment Of A Uaw Workforce, Paula L. Hughel Jan 1998

Empowerment Of A Uaw Workforce, Paula L. Hughel

Theses

This thesis will investigate whether empowerment of a workforce has a positive correlation on employee job satisfaction.

Research supports that the automotive industry is continuously focusing on the reduction of structural costs. One area that is commonly focused on is the reduction of manpower, specifically management. As the number of managers are reduced some of the work is being redistributed to the employees. Along with the additional work comes decision making responsibilities.

Although research supports that empowerment has a positive correlation on business results and working environments, it is inconclusive that empowerment has a positive correlation relative to job satisfaction. …

The Role And Impact Of Leaders' Mental Models In Effecting Planned Transformational Change, Stephen C. Rathmill Jan 1998

The Role And Impact Of Leaders' Mental Models In Effecting Planned Transformational Change, Stephen C. Rathmill

Educational Studies Dissertations

Presidents and CEOs play a critical role in leading their organizations through planned transformational change (PTC) and generally, do not do it very well. This may, in part, be a result of leaders not closely examining and challenging their thinking about PTC and their role in leading it. Leaders' mental models determine what and how they think about their organizations, employees, transformational change and what their leadership means and how their mental models determine their actions and behaviors in planning and implementing PTC. By examining and challenging their mental models, leaders may gain insights into alternative ways of leading and …

Does Technology Reform Education?, Connie Courbat Jan 1998

Does Technology Reform Education?, Connie Courbat

Graduate Research Papers

School reform initiatives have been part of public school change for some time. In the past two decades, this author has participated in implementing several educational changes within a public school classroom. Some of these changes have involved learning new teaching strategies, integrating technology into the curriculum, implementing new concepts such as whole language, and participating in workshops to learn about "new" educational topics.

Often these change efforts were embraced by educators as new and innovative ways to help students learn. However, many of these changes were tried and discarded because no ongoing effort was made to incorporate them systematically …

New Conundrums: Public Policy And The Emerging Health Care Marketplace, James R. Tallon Jan 1998

New Conundrums: Public Policy And The Emerging Health Care Marketplace, James R. Tallon

Center for Policy Research

There is a fundamentally new dynamic in American health care, one that has yet to be fully experienced but that threatens to leave a large portion of the American population without access to the quality health care they have received in the past. While the federal government has not completely abandoned the goal of assuring universal health care, a goal that dates back to the creation of Medicare and Medicaid in the 1960s and even earlier, the mechanisms to pursue that goal have changed. The implicit contract between government and health care providers--mostly doctors and not-for-profit hospitals--under which subsidized care …

Trends Affecting Both Legitimate Business And The Italian-American Mafia And The Resulting Changes In The Leadership Process, Kimberley M. Reiners Jan 1998

Trends Affecting Both Legitimate Business And The Italian-American Mafia And The Resulting Changes In The Leadership Process, Kimberley M. Reiners

Honors Theses

The past two decades have brought with it a wave of movies and novels attempting to explain, or at least accurately portray, the Italian-American Mafia. One who has viewed the Godfather quickly becomes fascinated by this subculture and its ability to exist simultaneously with the rest of society. Moviegoers are mesmerized by codes of loyalty, silence, and kinship. However, much of what the public perceives as fact is little more than fabricated fiction. Part of what makes this world so intriguing is so little is known about it. For example, until 1986 there was no solid proof that the Mafia …

Leadership Curricula And The Changing Organization, Matthew Repella Jan 1998

Leadership Curricula And The Changing Organization, Matthew Repella

Honors Theses

This project involves many issues regarding organizational leadership. It seems in the past, all people thought of was management. True, those were different times, when manufacturing was the primary means of employment and factory workers were everywhere. As businesses have progressed through the industrial revolution and the service industry has become more prevalent, the workforce has changed with the times. This requires new thoughts on organizational leadership. It cannot be said that leadership does not change as the situation and/or the followers change. Likewise, as we progress into future, un-chartered territory, leadership will be affected. This paper seeks to determine …

Leadership And The War Between The States, Matt Cobb Jan 1998

Leadership And The War Between The States, Matt Cobb

Honors Theses

The concept of a Servant Leader is fascinating because it seems to be an oxymoron. How can one be a servant if they are to lead? This seems even stranger when placed in the context of military leaders. Robert Greenleaf argued that "The servant-leader is servant first. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead."' Individuals such as Jesus Christ, Mohandas Gandhi, and Martin Luther King Jr. immediately seem to fit the definition for servant leaders. Each individual involved with the military serve their respective …

Who Speaks For The Rio Jemez? A Management Plan For The Lower Jemez River Basin, Tom Krause Jan 1998

Who Speaks For The Rio Jemez? A Management Plan For The Lower Jemez River Basin, Tom Krause

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The Rio Jemez Watershed can logically be divided into an upper watershed and a lower watershed based on terrain, climate, and river characteristics. Water in the upper watershed is plentiful and more than adequate to meet the water rights claims located there. However, water in the lower watershed is not adequate to meet claims throughout the growing season of April through October. Irrigation diversions use all of the available water in the river during the months of July, August, and September, often leaving the Rio Jemez a dry channel below the community of San Ysidro. This practice has negative impacts …

The Organizational Action Research Model, Morton Elfenbein, Stephen M. Brown, Kim H. Knight Jan 1998

The Organizational Action Research Model, Morton Elfenbein, Stephen M. Brown, Kim H. Knight

WCBT Faculty Publications

This chapter proposes a paradigm, which empowers practitioners to practice research to meet their needs and to advance the profession to which they belong. It proposes the integration of practitioner and researcher role as an alternative to the fragmented model that currently exists. In doing so, it draws much from the past tradition of the action researchers as well as the science approach espoused by others. In this way, the needs of individual managers to evaluate their espoused theories and their theories-in-use can be undertaken so that their organizations can function more realistically and can respond more effectively to the …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis will examine the history of intelligence leading to the creation of DIA, DIA's changing and emerging roles, its missions and organization, agency contribution during military operations, criticisms of the agency, and lastly the intelligence outlook for the future of DIA. Since its creation in 1961, DIA has undergone numerous reorganizations and this thesis will examine the history of intelligence leading to the creation of the attempts to streamline intelligence and provide the best product possible. Most of these changes have occurred after major campaigns in which intelligence either failed, was inaccurate or could have played a better or …

The Effect Of Developmental Process On The Cognitive Complexity Of Stereotypes, Susan Blanchard Bosco Jan 1998

The Effect Of Developmental Process On The Cognitive Complexity Of Stereotypes, Susan Blanchard Bosco

Open Access Dissertations

Diversity training, which deals with enabling people from different populations to work together, has been lead to date by practitioners. Much of diversity training includes helping people to become less stereotypical in the way they view people who are from groups different from their own. The lack of theoretical foundation for this training has been reflected in the lack of positive outcomes to diversity training and even the use of diversity training experiences as the basis for discrimination lawsuits against organizations. One area of theory which has lacked exploration is the relationship between how a person develops his or her …
