Perceptions Of New Hampshire Teachers And Supervisors Regarding Teacher Supervision, Pamela L. Clark

Doctoral Dissertations

This study examined the perceptions of New Hampshire teachers and supervisors regarding teacher present and ideal systems for teacher supervision. Teacher supervision was defined as being inclusive of district practices which promote teacher growth and development and those which are used to make evaluative judgments about teachers' performance. The study sample included 73 supervisors and 305 teachers randomly selected from 45 school districts. The sample districts were selected using a stratified random sampling process in which the stratification variables were district wealth as reflected in the district's equalized valuation per pupil and geographic region.

Planning Multicultural Audits In Higher Education, Mark A. Chesler Jan 1998

Planning Multicultural Audits In Higher Education, Mark A. Chesler

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Colleges and universities are struggling with issues of diversity and multiculturalism-in classrooms, social interactions, staff relations, admissions and hiring processes, and overall campus climate. As part of organizational change efforts, many institutions are calling on faculty development offices to help plan, staff, and implement cultural audits or assessments. This article suggests tested procedures for designing and carrying out such audits, with examples of specific data-gathering techniques (and in some cases evidence) from various institutions. Cultural audits will be most successful, accurate, and useful when these procedures are considered carefully and built into the audit design at the beginning.

The Role Of Educational Developers In Institutional Change: From The Basement Office To The Front Office, Nancy Van Note Chism

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Educational developers can play a crucial role in helping colleges and universities respond to change. Among the roles they can play are researcher, assessment resource, friendly critic, messenger, translator, and coach. To perform these roles, developers need certain characteristics and special knowledge bases as well as enabling conditions within their environment. The current state of higher education may be calling for a paradigm shift in educational development as well.

The Role Of Communication In Providing Leadership For School Restructuring, Theodore J. Kowalski Jan 1998

The Role Of Communication In Providing Leadership For School Restructuring, Theodore J. Kowalski

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Educational reform now focuses largely on school restructuring. In this context, both transformational leadership and cultural change paradigms have become critical issues for school administrators. The argument is made that both concepts are inextricably linked to communication. Consequently, leadership for change requires both an adequate knowledge base pertaining to leadership and organizational theory and knowledge and skill in the area of communication theory. A research agenda for studying communication in schools and the inclusion of communication theory in the preparation of school administrators are recommended.

Business Process Change And The Role Of The Management Accountant, Sakthi Mahenthiran, Russ Kershaw

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

The role if the management accountant (MA) is undergoing a transition from that if a "number-crunching" preparer of financial statements and cost reports to that if a business partner. The MA is increasingly expected to analyze and explain the business implications if financial information and is becoming more involved in strategic planning, performance evaluation, and business process reengineering. Changes in the business environment have caused many companies to modify their strategic objectives and redesign their existing business processes. Firms can initiate and manage business process change (BPC) using different approaches. This article identifies the particular management accounting activities and skills …

Creating Community Through Art: Two Research Project Reviews, Seymour Simmons Iii Jan 1998

Creating Community Through Art: Two Research Project Reviews, Seymour Simmons Iii

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Against a background of contemporary social problems and concerns, this article considers the role of the arts in creating community. It begins with a synopsis of Ellen Dissanayake’s anthropological perspective on the importance of the arts in human evolution, human development, and premodern societies. It then considers current approaches to community-building through the arts based on two recent research projects done by Harvard Project Zero and its affiliates. One project, the Lincoln Center Institute Arts-in-Education Survey Study, reviewed twenty-two arts-in-education programs including community art centers, cultural centers, arts-infusion schools, and state and local arts councils. The other, Project Co-Arts, involved …

The Impact Of Family Planning Household Service Delivery On Women's Status In Bangladesh, James F. Phillips, Mian Bazle Hossain Jan 1998

The Impact Of Family Planning Household Service Delivery On Women's Status In Bangladesh, James F. Phillips, Mian Bazle Hossain

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Since 1982, the Maternal and Child Health and Family Planning Extension Project has compiled longitudinal panel data on rural women’s contact with household service providers who visit homes to discuss family planning and offer services to women on request. This study tests the hypothesis that home-based services reinforce customs of purdah (female seclusion) by sustaining the dependency and isolation of the women served by the program. Results show that household services improve women’s status. This effect is largely attributable to the impact of outreach on effective fertility regulation. Findings do not support the hypothesis that household service delivery is detrimental …

Race, Gender, And The Law In The Twenty-First Century Workplace: Some Preliminary Observations, Susan P. Sturm Jan 1998

Race, Gender, And The Law In The Twenty-First Century Workplace: Some Preliminary Observations, Susan P. Sturm

Faculty Scholarship

This article seeks to move beyond the debate between informal and formal legal regulation. Both approaches reflect essential but limited components of a legal regulatory regime. Neither approach adequately responds to the simultaneous challenges of changing organizational structure, racial and gender dynamics, and market-driven demands for flexibility and adaptiveness. The next step requires that we take account of the critiques of formality and informality. This requires embracing the challenge of developing new forms of legal regulation that treat organizational decision makers and incentive structures explicitly as part of the legal regulatory regime. In this view, law consists of a set …

Environmental Regulatory Influence And Product Innovation: The Contingency Effects Of Organizational Characteristics, Carol M. Sanchez, William Mckinley Jan 1998

Environmental Regulatory Influence And Product Innovation: The Contingency Effects Of Organizational Characteristics, Carol M. Sanchez, William Mckinley

Peer Reviewed Articles

This paper examines the relationship between environmental regulatory influence and product innovation in a multi-industry sample of manufacturing organizations. Our theory argues that the influence of environmental regulation on the level of product innovation in a manufacturing organization is at least partially contingent on the organization's internal characteristics -- in particular, its structural flexibility and production process flexibility. Hypotheses are derived from our theory and tested, and the results are consistent with the conclusion that structural flexibility and production process flexibility moderate the environmental regulatory influence-product innovation relationship. Whether environmental regulation inhibits or promotes product innovation seems to depend at …

Secondary Control: Examining The Influence Of School Restructuring On High School Delinquency., Michael O. Maume

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Recent years have seen extensive debate on the multitude of problems plaguing secondary education in the United States, and the problem of school crime and deviance is gaining a sizable share of the attention. A wave of school reform sometimes labeled the "restructuring" movement suggests that major organizational changes in schools, especially public schools, can positively affect student achievement and commitment to educational goals. Yet there has been practically no attention paid to the possible effects of restructuring on reducing delinquency in schools. I examine the impact of high school restructuring on school delinquency using a broad conception of delinquency …

Teacher Selection Practices In Effective Elementary Schools Which Differ By Community Type And Socioeconomic Status Context., Amy Barham Westbrook

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The current study investigated teacher selection in elementary schools which differ by school type, community type, and socioeconomic status (SES). The qualities sought, procedures utilized, and problems encountered by principals during teacher selection were examined. Statistical analyses were used to determine whether school types differ significantly on variables regarding teacher selection. The present study involved collecting both qualitative and quantitative data, and was conducted in four phases. In Phase I, all elementary schools in the state were classified by community type, student body SES, and "effective" and "typical" status. Phase II consisted of 12 site visits to "effective" schools which …

Transforming Corporations To Transform Society : A Case Study Of The Timberland Corporation, Jesse Levin Jan 1998

Transforming Corporations To Transform Society : A Case Study Of The Timberland Corporation, Jesse Levin

Honors Theses

There are many organizations that are involved in the community; so why is Timberland-unique? In 1990, Timberland began a relationship with City Year, a non- profit corps-based service organization. This relationship evolved into a $5 million a year partnership between the two organizations. The two organizations provide an example of a working partnership between a for-profit business and a non-profit organization that changes many conceptions of corporate philanthropy.

The purpose for this case study is to test the applicability and validity of Gill Hickman's emerging conceptual framework, "transformistic organizations," within the context of the Timberland Corporation. The Timberland model will …

The Use Of Influence Tactics Ins Cso/Board Relations In Accordance With The Board Composition, Mary Knox Bricken Jan 1998

The Use Of Influence Tactics Ins Cso/Board Relations In Accordance With The Board Composition, Mary Knox Bricken

Honors Theses

The present study seeks to understand why greater structural board independence may not necessarily strengthen the board's overall power in its relationship with the CEO; and, further, it aims to determine what factors do affect board leader-follower relations. Existing research has studied CEO's reactions to the implicit loss of their structural sources of power. However, very little research has been devoted to the suggested notion that CEO's may use unconventional influence tactics in order to maintain their power at levels equivalent to before structural board change. This study strives to discover what tactics CEO's may use in order to sustain …

The Wage Gap Between Men And Women Is Narrowing: Fact Or Fiction, Tabatha A. White Jan 1998

The Wage Gap Between Men And Women Is Narrowing: Fact Or Fiction, Tabatha A. White

Theses

This thesis will focus on the study of how "traditionally female" and "traditionally male" occupations impact the wage gap between men and women. It will also touch on how the wage gap has been decreasing throughout the years.

There has been considerable debate and controversy regarding the issue of wage discrimination between men and women particularly with regard to women working in male dominated occupations. Some researchers believe that the wage gap between men and women has been declining because of an increase in women's education and experience, whereas, some researchers believe it has been declining because of the decrease …
