Sedimentation Of Prairie Wetlands, Robert A. Gleason, Ned H. Euliss, Jr. Apr 1998

Sedimentation Of Prairie Wetlands, Robert A. Gleason, Ned H. Euliss, Jr.

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Many wetlands in the prairie pothole region are embedded within an agricultural landscape where they are subject to varying degrees of siltation. Cultivation of wetland catchment areas has exacerbated soil erosion; wetlands in agricultural fields receive more sediment from upland areas than wetlands in grassland landscapes and hence are subject to premature filling (i.e., they have shorter topographic lives). Associated impacts from increased turbidity, sediment deposition, and increased surface water input likely have impaired natural wetland functions. Although trapping of sediments by wetlands is often cited as a water quality benefit, sediment input from agricultural fields has potential to completely …

Effects Of Atmospheric Change And Agriculture On The Biogeochemistry And Microbial Ecology Of Prairie Wetlands, Richard D. Robarts, Marley J. Waiser Apr 1998

Effects Of Atmospheric Change And Agriculture On The Biogeochemistry And Microbial Ecology Of Prairie Wetlands, Richard D. Robarts, Marley J. Waiser

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Relatively little is known about the factors which regulate in water biogeochemical processes and food chains in prairie wetlands. Climatic warming, increased UV-radiation and agricultural activities will have interacting effects on these wetlands. We examined the effects of these processes on prairie wetland functioning and productivity with particular emphasis on production and cycling of organic carbon, especially dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Autotrophic and heterotrophic production are temperature dependent and temperature increases or decreases could affect production under more extreme climate change scenarios. DOC concentrations could decrease with increasing bacterial production and photolysis, leading to increases in UV-radiation penetration. This is …

The Relationship Between Nectar Sources And Regal Fritillary (Speyeria Idalia Drury) Butterfly Populations., Jeffrey J. Huebschman Apr 1998

The Relationship Between Nectar Sources And Regal Fritillary (Speyeria Idalia Drury) Butterfly Populations., Jeffrey J. Huebschman

Student Work

I investigated the relationship between nectar source diversity and regal fritillary (Speyeria idalia Drury) butterfly populations at ten native tallgrass prairie sites in eastern Nebraska. Walking-transect surveys were used to establish regal fritillary population-density indices in 1996 and 1997. Flowering-plant surveys were also conducted, coincident with the butterfly surveys, and were used to develop blossom-density, and abundance indices. Spearman rank correlation was used to examine relationships between regal fritillary density indices and plant survey variables. Two significant, positive correlations were identified between (1) 1996 population-density indices and 1996 blossom-diversity indices for known nectaring sources of the regal fritillary (n = …

Quality Of Life In Grandparents After A Diagnosis Of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia In Their Grandchild, Laura S. Mullins

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to assess grandparents' perceptions of their quality of life (QOL) after the diagnosis and treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in their grandchild. The following questions were addressed: (a) How do grandparents of children with ALL perceive their current QOL; (b) How do grandparents of children with ALL perceive their current QOL has changed since their grandchild was diagnosed; (c) What specific changes in QOL have grandparents experienced since the diagnosis of ALL in their grandchild; (d) What is the grandparents' overall attitude about life with leukemia; (e) Is there a relationship between the …

Being Female Can Be Fatal: An Examination Of India's Ban On Pre-Natal Gender Testing, Andrea Krugman Apr 1998

Being Female Can Be Fatal: An Examination Of India's Ban On Pre-Natal Gender Testing, Andrea Krugman

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The note examines India's 1996 Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Act, which aims to address the severe gender imbalance caused by prenatal sex selection and female feticide. Despite the Act's intentions, its effectiveness is hindered by deep-rooted cultural preferences for male children, economic pressures, and insufficient enforcement mechanisms. The analysis highlights the need for broader societal changes, including education and economic empowerment for women, to effectively combat gender discrimination.

Workforce Development Network Resource Directory: A Directory Of Workforce Development Service Providers In Multnomah And Washington Counties, Kim Burnett, Ray Jackson, Britt Parrott, Matt Ransom, Claire Smith

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

This resource directory was produced for the Workforce Development Network (WDN) by a group of graduate students in the Urban and Regional Planning masters program at Portland State University. The project team consisted of Kim Burnett, Ray Jackson, Britt Parrott, Mat Ransom, and Claire Smith. The information for the directory was collected through interviews with service providers identified by WDN and the Workforce development Board.

The scope of the resource directory is limited to adult workforce development programs in Multnomah and Washington Counties and does not include temporary employment agencies or apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs due to time and resource …

Acute Blood Pressure Responses To Static And Dynamic Exercise: Racial Differences, Reuben Leon Wright Apr 1998

Acute Blood Pressure Responses To Static And Dynamic Exercise: Racial Differences, Reuben Leon Wright

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

African Americans have a higher incidence of hypertension than other racial groups. Furthermore, some research suggests that normotensive individuals who exhibit exaggerated blood pressure (BP) responses to exercise may be at risk for future hypertension. This study sought to determine if normotensive African Americans exhibited exaggerated BP responses to static exercise or dynamic exercise relative to Caucasian Americans and Asian Americans. Thirty normotensive subjects participated from each of the three racial groups (15 males and 15 females). Subjects held 30% of maximal voluntary contraction (right knee extension) for 3 minutes, and BP was recorded during the third minute. On a …
