How Super Are Video Supers? A Test Of Communication Efficacy, Noel Murray, Lalita A. Manrai, Ajay K. Manrai

Business Faculty Articles and Research

Interest in the role of video supers-superimposed video presentations of verbal information-has grouwn among consumers, advertisers, the television networks, and public policymakers, as supers have become prevalent in television commercials. The authors empirically address the communications efficacy of video supers in a sample of 200 different commercials that contain video supers Drawing on a theory of modality effects, the authors examine the comprehensive of video supers relative to commercial content. The authors develop hypotheses and analyze structural determinants of video super comprehension, such as presence of a voice-over, rate of presentation, and presentation size. The findings are supportive of the …

Spiritual Issues And Interventions In The Treatment Of Patients With Eating Disorders, P. Scott Richards, Randy K. Hardman, Harold A. Frost, Michael E. Berrett

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

This article examines the roles of religion and spirituality in the etiology and treatment of eating disorders. After briefly reviewing the relevant research, we discuss the most common and significant religious and spiritual issues wer have observed with LDS eating disorder patients including negative images or perceptions of God, feelings of spiritual unworthiness and shame, and fear of abandonment by God. We briefly describe process considerations for using spiritual interventions and concluded by describing seven spiritual interventions we have found especially useful in treating LDS eating disorder patients, including spiritual teachings, spiritual bibliotherapy, and prayer.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a common chronic disease that is thought to have a substantial genetic basis. Identification of the genes responsible has been hampered by the complex nature of the syndrome. Abnormalities in insulin secretion and insulin action predict the development of type 2 diabetes and are, themselves, highly heritable traits. Since fewer genes may contribute to these precursors of type 2 diabetes than to the overall syndrome, such genes may be easier to identify. We, therefore, undertook an autosomal genomic scan to identify loci linked to prediabetic traits in Pima Indians, a population with a high prevalence …

The purpose of this study was to determine whether participation in a Family Resource\Youth Services Center New and Expectant Parenting Series had an impact on maternal and child health knowledge of parents and their future behavior choices. The study had two components. First, a telephone survey was conducted with 40 past program participants asking them nine questions concerning behavior and lifestyle choices in regards to child safety, breast or bottle feeding, immunizations, car seat use, etc. Secondly, thirty participants were given a pretest and posttest questionnaire.
