Phytotoxicity Of Pseudomonas Chlororaphis Strain O6: Role Of Phenazines And Implications For Biocontrol, Elizabeth Thomas
Phytotoxicity Of Pseudomonas Chlororaphis Strain O6: Role Of Phenazines And Implications For Biocontrol, Elizabeth Thomas
Biology
Phenazines, the water-soluble pigments produced naturally by bacteria with distinct antimicrobial properties, have been implicated in the biological control of several plant diseases. Pseudomonas chlororaphis strain O6, obtained from the rhizosphere of wheat, is known to produce at least three different phenazines, which include phenazine-1-carboxylic acid, 2-hydroxyphenazine-1-carboxylic acid, and 2-hydroxyphenazine. A field trial conducted in the fall of 1994 to test the biocontrol properties of O6 indicated that this strain inhibited wheat seed germination, which led me to hypothesize that phenazines cause phytotoxicity. Mutants of O6 created by Tn5 lux insertion (Phz- mutants) that did not produce the pigments …

Phylogenetic Characterization Of Endosymbionts In Psyllids (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha), Allen W. Spaulding
Phylogenetic Characterization Of Endosymbionts In Psyllids (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha), Allen W. Spaulding
Biology
Most sternorrhynchan insects harbor endosymbiotic bacteria in specialized cells (bacteriocytes) near the gut, which provide essential nutrients for hosts. In lineages investigated so far with molecular methods (aphids, mealybugs, whiteflies), endosymbionts apparently have arisen from independent infections of common host ancestors and cospeciated with their hosts. Some endosymbionts also exhibit putatively negative genetic effects from their symbiotic association. In this study, the identity of endosymbionts in one major sternorrhynchan lineage, psyllids (Psylloidea), was investigated to determine their position in eubacterial phylogeny and relationship to other sternorrhynchan endosymbionts. Small-subunit ribosomal RNA genes (16S rDNA) from bacteria in three psyllid species (families …

Poor Children "Know Their Place": Perceptions Of Poverty, Class, And Public Messages, Susan Weinger
Poor Children "Know Their Place": Perceptions Of Poverty, Class, And Public Messages, Susan Weinger
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This qualitative study hears and clarifies some of the voices of children concerning how they feel their lives are circumscribed by living in poverty, by public messages about the poor, and by their views of their socioeconomic status. Twenty-four children between the ages of 5-12 years were interviewed using snapshots of different economic level homes in order to capture their uncensored responses. Findings reveal that the children view poverty as a deprivation, perceive societal messages as disparaging of the poor, and have some difficulty holding on to positive views of themselves. These children's thoughts about the realities of their lives …

The effect of thermocycling on the fatigue behaviour of 5 commercially available dental composites; P50(P)1, Silux Plus(S)2, Heliomolar(H)3, Clearfil Photo Posterior-light activated(CLA)4 and Clearfil Posterior-chemically activated(CC)5 was investigated. One hundred and ten rectangular bar specimens were prepared for each materil and divided into 11 groups of 10 each. Test groups 1-6 were subjected to 0, 250, 500, 750, 1000 and 1000 thermal cycles respectively. Each thermal cycle consisted of 1 minute immersion time of 50 seconds per change. The control groups 7-11 were stored in distilled water at 370c for the equivalent time to complete 250, 500, 750, 1000 and …
Exploring Teacher Thinking About Practices In Inclusive Early Childhood Settings Through Case Study Method: Early Childhood And Early Childhood Special Educators' Perspectives, Karen R. Danbom
Theses and Dissertations
This is a study of the thinking and reasoning underlying the teaching practices of early childhood and early childhood special educators. It provides an opportunity to better understand the nature of teaching in integrated classrooms by understanding the knowledge, beliefs, and thoughts that inform practices of individual teachers. The thinking of teachers was studied as they were interviewed about situations in integrated classrooms and as they reflected on their own teaching of children with and without disabilities. The questions guiding this study were (a) How do early childhood educators and early childhood special educators reason and think through issues of …

Heatlh Education In The Postpartum Population Of The Native Americans On The Ft. Peck Reservation Following Early Postpartum Discharge, Debra Hall
Theses and Dissertations
Early postpartum discharge 24-48 hours after delivery has become a current trend in the United States. There are numerous and substantive issues relating to this concept which affect not only hospital personnel, but more specifically new mothers and babies.
On the Ft. Peck Reservation in northeast Montana the standard of early discharge postpartum has been initiated. The purpose of this study was to identify postpartum/newbom education deficits among the population of postpartum women on the Ft. Peck Reservation and to compare and contrast these results between the Poplar and Wolf Point. MT. communities. Additionally, the identification of the resources used …
Expression And Iron Loading Of Recombinant Ferritin Homopolymers, Jia-Hsin Guo
Expression And Iron Loading Of Recombinant Ferritin Homopolymers, Jia-Hsin Guo
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Ferritin is an iron storage protein consisting of H and L chains to form a 24-subunit heropolymer. Ceruloplamin oxidizes Fe(II) and then loads the iron into ferritin. This research was conducted to determine which ferritin subunit is involved and whether a proposed iron-loading channel is required for iron loading by ceruloplasmin.
Recombinant rat liver H and L chain ferritin homopolymers, designated as rH-Ft and rL-Ft, respectively, were produced using insect cell-baculovirus and Escherichia coli expression systems. The expressed rH-Ft strongly suppressed the growth of the host. The rH-Ft expressed in the E. coli contained approximately 150 iron atoms/ferritin and was …
The Effects Of Service Learning On Middle And High School Students With Emotional Disturbance, Arthur E. Brandt
The Effects Of Service Learning On Middle And High School Students With Emotional Disturbance, Arthur E. Brandt
Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship
A qualitative investigation into the efficacy of the integration of service-learning into the curriculum for emotionally disturbed students as a means of fostering social/emotional well-being was considered in this thesis. Two separate service-learning approaches were used to observe the effects of service-learning on (a) school related behaviors, (b) academic performance, (c) positive shifts in empathic feelings, (d) improved self-esteem, and (e) individual locus-of-control.
Two case studies, one group and one individual, were completed over an 11 month period in two different service-learning environments. Participants were 12-15 year old boys with emotional disturbance. Data were collected using formalized pre and post-test …

Protein Production In The Milk Of Genetically Engineered Animals, Katherine M. Bates
Protein Production In The Milk Of Genetically Engineered Animals, Katherine M. Bates
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
There are numerous proteins that have potential uses in commercial and scientific applications that are not utilized to their full potential. this is partly because it is not economically feasible to isolate some of these proteins from their natural sources or to produce them using bacterial fermentation methods. The purpose of this research was to target recombinant protein expression to the mammary glands of genetically engineered or transgenic animals. Foreign protein expression has been achieved in the mammary glands of rabbits, sheep, cows, and swine. By using a strong mammary gland promoter and signal peptide fused to the protein, it …
Predicting Transpiration Rates Of Hydroponically-Grown Plant Communities In Controlled Environments, Oscar Monje
Predicting Transpiration Rates Of Hydroponically-Grown Plant Communities In Controlled Environments, Oscar Monje
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Canopy transpiration is a major factor determining crop evapotranspiration and energy budgets. Unfortunately the development of robust models of canopy transpiration is hindered by a lack of reliable data due to the difficulties of making canopy-scale measurements. However, measurements of canopy water vapor and carbon fluxes via gas exchange techniques are possible in controlled environments. Simultaneous measurements of transpiration, photosynthesis, and canopy temperature were made in wheat and soybean communities. These data were used to calculate chamber aerodynamic and canopy stomata! conductances, and to model the response of canopy transpiration to CO2concentration and vapor pressure deficit. Canopy stomata! …

Limitations On Canada Goose Production At Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge, Utah, Dorie S. Stolley
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Canada geese (Branta canadensis) recently have become management problems in some areas due to overpopulation. At Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), managers are concerned with the opposite situation. Despite attempts to boost production, only 18 to 34 goslings of the western Canada goose (B. c. moffitti) were produced per year, from 1989 to 1993. I studied the breeding population from March to July in 1996 and 1997. Results suggest that production is limited in 3 ways: low gosling survival, low nesting success for ground nests, and low number of breeding pairs.
Gosling survival to fledging …
Identification Of Non-Nuclear Receptors For 1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3 In Chick Kidney And Brain, Zhiheng Jia
Identification Of Non-Nuclear Receptors For 1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3 In Chick Kidney And Brain, Zhiheng Jia
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D3) has been shown to mediate the rapid, non-nuclear stimulation of calcium and phosphate transport in chick intestine through binding to a receptor localized in the basal lateral membrane. By using an antibody to the N-terminus of the membrane receptor, studies were undertaken to determine whether a comparable protein exists in kidney and brain, and whether it is present in a particular subcellular fraction.
The first step was to establish fractionation protocols to separate subcellular organelles as judged by marker enzyme analyses. Differential centrifugation and Percoll gradient fractions were prepared from chick kidney …
Antioxidant Activity Of Carnosine And Phytate: Application As Meat Preservatives, Beom Jun Lee
Antioxidant Activity Of Carnosine And Phytate: Application As Meat Preservatives, Beom Jun Lee
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The antioxidant activity of carnosine and phytic acid was investigated using several model systems. Carnosine and phytic acid alone inhibited metal ion-catalyzed deoxyribose degradation. Carnosine strongly inhibited metal ion-catalyzed lipid peroxidation in liposomes and in ground beef homogenates. Phytic acid facilitated oxidation of Fe (II) to Fe (III), and it inhibited hemeprotein + H2O2-catalyzed lipid peroxidation in linoleic acid micelles.
Antioxidant and color stabilizing effects of carnosine and phytate were investigated in a beef model system. Both compounds increased the rate of pH decline in pre-rigor beef muscle and stabilized fresh meat color by inhibiting metmyoglobin …
