Nativity, Domesticity, And Exile In Edward Abbey's "One True Home", Thomas Lynch Jun 1998

Nativity, Domesticity, And Exile In Edward Abbey's "One True Home", Thomas Lynch

Department of English: Faculty Publications

On April first, 1956, only a few days prior to recording in his journal the birth of his son, Edward Abbey began the first of three seasons as a ranger in Arches National Monument. He immortalized this sojourn in the influential classic of nature writing Desert Solitaire, a work whose very title suggests that his experience of the desert was one essentially aloof from familial or other ties. As Abbey reveled in his desert solitude, his wife, Rita, and new son, Joshua, were summering in Hoboken. During subsequent years his wife and son visited periodically with him, but never for …

Identification Of A Family Of Zinc Transporter Genes From Arabidopsis That Respond To Zinc Deficiency, Natasha Grotz, Tama Fox, Erin Connolly, Walter Park, Mary Lou Guerinot, David Eide Jun 1998

Identification Of A Family Of Zinc Transporter Genes From Arabidopsis That Respond To Zinc Deficiency, Natasha Grotz, Tama Fox, Erin Connolly, Walter Park, Mary Lou Guerinot, David Eide

Dartmouth Scholarship

Millions of people worldwide suffer from nutritional imbalances of essential metals like zinc. These same metals, along with pollutants like cadmium and lead, contaminate soils at many sites around the world. In addition to posing a threat to human health, these metals can poison plants, livestock, and wildlife. Deciphering how metals are absorbed, transported, and incorporated as protein cofactors may help solve both of these problems. For example, edible plants could be engineered to serve as better dietary sources of metal nutrients, and other plant species could be tailored to remove metal ions from contaminated soils. We report here the …

The Relation Of Weight Loss And Improved Fitness To Survival In Healthy Males, Joanna Lynn Bokovoy Jun 1998

The Relation Of Weight Loss And Improved Fitness To Survival In Healthy Males, Joanna Lynn Bokovoy

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Obesity is a critical public health problem because of its prevalence, medical and psychosocial effects, and resistance to intervention. Weight loss in overweight individuals has been encouraged by the United States Public Health Service and by the medical community as a means for improving health. However, recent studies have suggested either positive or negative effects of weight loss on survival. It is possible that physical fitness may have a confounding effect, or be an effect modifier on survival in weight loss studies.

This study used Cox Regression analysis to address the separate and combined association of weight loss and improved …

Plant-Delivered Cholera Toxin B Subunit As An Immunomodulatory Molecule, Takeshi Arakawa Jun 1998

Plant-Delivered Cholera Toxin B Subunit As An Immunomodulatory Molecule, Takeshi Arakawa

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The B subunit of cholera toxin (CTB) functions as an effective mucosal carrier molecule of chemically or genetically conjugated antigens. Orally delivered CTB or CTB fusion protein binds to GM1-ganglioside receptor molecules located on cells in the gutassociated lymphoid tissues, the site of immunological induction. We have generated transgenic plants synthesizing CTB conjugated with vaccine antigens for food plant-based prevention of cholera and rotavirus toxin-induced diarrhea and for autoimmune diseases such as insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM).

Mice fed with transgenic potato tubers synthesizing 0.3% of CTB as total tuber protein generated serum and mucosal antibodies with toxin neutralizing …

Food Stamp Trafficking: Why Small Groceries Need Judicial Protection From The Department Of Agriculture (And From Their Own Employees), Elliot Regenstein Jun 1998

Food Stamp Trafficking: Why Small Groceries Need Judicial Protection From The Department Of Agriculture (And From Their Own Employees), Elliot Regenstein

Michigan Law Review

A neon sign in the window of 7-Van Drugs reads "Food Stamps," but the contradictory truth is posted inside on a handwritten sign taped to a thick pane of bulletproof plastic. 7-Van Drugs sits at the intersection of Seven Mile Road and Van Dyke in northern Detroit, where it has "serv[ ed] the community since 1948 at the same corner." Inside 7-Van is an array of staple foods and basic household cleaning items, and there is a small pharmacy in the back. Customers must use a turnstile to pass their purchases through the bulletproof plastic to the cashier. There are …

Providing Support To Extension Agents: The Rapid Response Center In Kansas, Robert Brannan, Mary Mcphail Gray Jun 1998

Providing Support To Extension Agents: The Rapid Response Center In Kansas, Robert Brannan, Mary Mcphail Gray

Journal of Extension

The Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) Rapid Response Center was developed within the Kansas State University Cooperative Extension System (K-State Research and Extension) to support 120 Kansas FACS Extension agents. With access to specialists often times limited and differing levels of technology from county-to-county, agents needed a subject-matter based resource to provide timely information to a answer unusual information requests. The usefulness of the center is described using two years' worth of accumulated data and an evaluation of the center by agents. Future plans, including expansion of the center into other subject areas, are discussed.

A Model For Integrating Program Development And Evaluation, J Lynne Brown, Nancy Ellen Kiernan Jun 1998

A Model For Integrating Program Development And Evaluation, J Lynne Brown, Nancy Ellen Kiernan

Journal of Extension

We present the communication model of Gillespie and Yarbrough and explain how it served as the framework for combining program development and formative evaluation of an osteoporosis prevention program for working mothers. The model includes inputs, an educational intervention, and outcomes. Combining receiver, situational, and educator inputs produced a more viable pilot program that was tested with the target audience at two types of sites convenient for working mothers. We collected both quantitative and qualitative outcome data, allowing a rigorous examination of whether or not program components were successful, and why. Extension educators should consider using the model as an …

Professional Development For Paraprofessionals: Organizing A One Day Multi Agency Conference, Marisa Warrix

Journal of Extension

The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program and more recently the Family Nutrition Program are two examples of Extension's effective employment of paraprofessionals. Training is a critical component to any program that employs paraprofessionals. Extension has been viewed as a leader in the training of paraprofessionals. This article outlines the effectiveness of organizing a one-day workshop for paraprofessionals and supervisors offered by a coalition of agencies providing outreach services to families with children in Northeast Ohio.

Rescuing Rover: A First Aid And Disaster Guide For Dog Owners, Sebastian E. Heath

Purdue University Press Books

Whether you're hiking with your canine friend in a remote area or work with a dog on a search-and-rescue team or police force, you need to be prepared for emergencies when veterinary service is not available. Rescuing Rover: A First Aid and Disaster Guide for Dog Owners provides dog owners, handlers, and emergency physicians with an understandable guide for safe treatment until the dog can be transported to a veterinarian. Although a number of books describe some techniques for the emergency care of dogs, there is no single illustrated summary that is as practical. With its concise, easy-to-read instructions, detailed …

Uptake And Bioconcentration Of Atrazine By Selected Freshwater Algae, Jixin Tang, Kyle D. Hoagland, Blair Siegfried Jun 1998

Uptake And Bioconcentration Of Atrazine By Selected Freshwater Algae, Jixin Tang, Kyle D. Hoagland, Blair Siegfried

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Atrazine bioconcentration and uptake were determined for eight freshwater green algae and diatoms. Atrazine uptake was extremely rapid in all species examined, with nearly 90% of total uptake occurring within the first hour of exposure. Within each division, different species had different bioconcentration capacities, although the accumulation of atrazine was consistently higher in green algae (5.43–12.73 ng/mg) than in diatoms (0.33–1.69 ng/mg). Atrazine concentrations in the algal cells were much higher than in the medium, although the total amount of atrazine taken up by algae was small relative to the total atrazine in solution (1–3%). The ability of algal cells …

A Microcosm Study In The Reductive Dechlorination Of Tetrachloroethylene Using Fermentation Acids And Alcohols As Electron Donors, Anthony Siccard Iii May 1998

A Microcosm Study In The Reductive Dechlorination Of Tetrachloroethylene Using Fermentation Acids And Alcohols As Electron Donors, Anthony Siccard Iii

Theses

Anaerobic microcosms of Arthur Kill (New Jersey) sediment were used to investigate the effects of several electron donors on tetrachloroethylene (PCE) dechlorination activity. The substates tested were methanol, butanol, butyrate, lactate and succinate both by themselves and in various combinations. Different levels of PCE dehalogenation were noticed in all of the microcosms regardless of the electron donor used. Vinyl chloride was the major dehalogenation product detected in the majority of the microcosms. The causitive organism or group that carried our the reductive dehalogenation was not identified. Only the microcosms admended with a mixture of butanol/methanol were able to fully reduce …

Ecosystem Responses To Internal And Watershed Organic Matter Loading: Consequences For Hypoxia In The Eutrophying Neuse River Estuary, North Carolina, Usa, Hans W. Paerl, James L. Pinckney, John M. Fear, Benjamin L. Peierls May 1998

Ecosystem Responses To Internal And Watershed Organic Matter Loading: Consequences For Hypoxia In The Eutrophying Neuse River Estuary, North Carolina, Usa, Hans W. Paerl, James L. Pinckney, John M. Fear, Benjamin L. Peierls

Faculty Publications

The contrasting impacts of externally supplied (runoff) and internally generated (nutrient stimulated phytoplankton blooms) organic matter on oxygen (02) depletion were examined and evaluated in the eutrophic, salinity-stratified Neuse River Estuary, North Carolina, USA. This nitrogen (N)- limited estuary is experiencing increasing anthropogenic N loading from expanding urban, agricultural and industrial development in its watershed. Resultant algal blooms, which provided organic matter loads capable of causing extensive low 02 (hypoxic) and depleted 02 (anoxic) conditions, have induced widespread mortality of resident fin- and shellfish. Phytoplankton blooms followed periods of elevated N loading, except during extremely high …
