Photoadaptation Rate Of Synechococcus Wh7803 Cultures At Two Iron Concentrations, Jon Daniel Moulton
Photoadaptation Rate Of Synechococcus Wh7803 Cultures At Two Iron Concentrations, Jon Daniel Moulton
Dissertations and Theses
The marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus WH7803 adapts to changes in light intensity by changing its photosynthetic physiology. This work is a study o f the rate o f photoadaptation of Synechococcus WH7803 in laboratory cultures. Cultures were shifted from constant 8 µEm-2s-1 light to constant 80 µEm-2s-1 light, from constant 80 µEm-2s-1 light to 8 µEm-2s-1 light and from different light regimes to a single fluctuating light regime. The response of high iron cultures grown in modified aquil culture medium at 5*10-6M Fe was compared with the …

Is It Evolution Yet? A Critique Of Evolutionary Archaeology, James L. Boone, Eric Alden Smith
Is It Evolution Yet? A Critique Of Evolutionary Archaeology, James L. Boone, Eric Alden Smith
Anthropology Faculty & Staff Publications
The application of Darwinian evolutionary theory to archaeology has taken two divergent and rather distinct paths over the past two decades. According to one program, often referred to as evolutionary archaeology, cultural change as seen in the archaeological record can best be explained in terms of the direct action of natural selection and other Darwinian processes on heritable variation in artifacts and behavior. The other approach, referred to as evolutionary or behavioral ecology, explains cultural and behavioral change as forms of phenotypic adaptation to varying social and ecological conditions, using the assumption that natural selection has designed organisms to respond …

Civil Commitment Of Pregnant Women As A Means Of Protecting Fetuses From Maternal Drug And Alcohol Abuse, Dana S. Hardy
Civil Commitment Of Pregnant Women As A Means Of Protecting Fetuses From Maternal Drug And Alcohol Abuse, Dana S. Hardy
Student Thesis Honors (1996-2008)
During recent years, courts and legislatures have expanded the legal rights of fetuses, which historically were treated as part of the woman carrying them. This expansion of fetal rights has often resulted in conflict between the rights of the fetus and the rights of the woman carrying it. While concern for the health of fetuses is important to the health of our society, the maternal-fetal conflict is often unnecessary, as the health interests of fetuses could be more effectively promoted in ways that would not conflict with the interests of the mother. In this paper I will specifically address whether …

Professional Opportunities, Coalition For Education In The Outdoors
Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
This section included numerous opportunities for professional development related to outdoor education and environmental or conservation education. Some of the options included were: the 6th World Wilderness Congress, North American Hunting Heritage, and the Love Canal University (a training institute dubbed Love Canal University in honor of the knowledge it has passed on since the Love Canal Homeowners Association was first organized).
Global Environment Conflict In The Postcold War Era: Linkage To An Extended Paradigm, Michelle Zebich-Knos
Global Environment Conflict In The Postcold War Era: Linkage To An Extended Paradigm, Michelle Zebich-Knos
Peace and Conflict Studies
Excerpt
The end of the Cold War era has opened a Pandora's Box of environmental concerns that, heretofore, took a back seat to superpower struggles. Today, conflict is no longer played out within a Cold War conceptual framework. Imperfect, and at times, inconsistent as the Cold War framework was, it nevertheless provided decision makers with a recipe for action--or inaction. Since conflict is no longer structured within this framework, the two former superpowers --the United States and Russia--no longer possess clear yardsticks for action. With superpower interference in "proxy" conflict(s) no longer the definitive factor in the international arena, I …
Insect Herbivory Above- And Belowground: Individual And Joint Effects On Plant Fitness, John L. Maron
Insect Herbivory Above- And Belowground: Individual And Joint Effects On Plant Fitness, John L. Maron
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Understanding of the selective effects of insect herbivory on plants comes primarily from studies of herbivory aboveground. The impact of belowground herbivory, either in isolation or in concert with herbivory aboveground, on plant fitness is only beginning to be understood.
I reduced the densities of root-boring ghost moth (Hepialus californicus) larvae and/or flower- and seed-feeding insects of bush lupine (Lupinus arboreus), a woody shrub, and followed fecundity and survival of plants for three years. In year one, suppression of aboveground herbivores increased mean seed output by 31%, but suppression of belowground herbivores had no significant effect …

Pushing Rbst: How The Law And The Political Process Were Used To Sell Recombinant Bovine Somatotropin To America, David Aboulafia
Pace Environmental Law Review
This Article examines the controversy surrounding the use of rBST, a genetically altered growth hormone, in cows so that they produce more milk. Biotechnology holds tremendous benefits for society. However, this Article examines the inadequacy of the current regulatory scheme in addressing rBST. This Article contends that the inadequate nature of the regulatory scheme is due to the fact that lawmakers are overly concerned with the protection and development of the biotechnology industry. The law, as it stands, does not take into consideration the unknown health risks of rBST.
